Solarium

I wanted to start the record off with an evocative, cinematic opening: a futuristic city at night, neon in the rain, digital waves crashing against a metaverse shore. This track is meant to serve as the door to the world of the record.

Joseph Shabason’s sax and synth work here really steals the show. I sent him a soundscape, with everything you’re hearing in the foundation of the track, and his melodies took it to an entirely new level.

Last Time In This Place

Another very old track, initially made in 2018. I started playing this one live on a tour I did in January of 2019, when I was opening for Chrome Sparks. The crowds were quite big, even for my support slots, so it felt amazing to get to test out a song like this on a large crowd. It might be the first of my tracks to have a drop? I just remember that drop hitting during my sets on that tour, and seeing a room full of people all start dancing/throwing their hands up. I don’t know, it felt pretty good. I can see why there’s a whole industry created around that feeling. It’s funny though, the tone and feel of this one is pretty melancholic. It was actually initially a much more straight ahead ambient track, with a super faint kick drum. The magic of Joel Ford is at work here again. His ability to take the soft mixes I send him, and turn them into proper club tracks is incredible.

About Still Wandering: A quick moment to catch your breath before the final two songs on the record. This song is another example of blending together ideas from three or four other demos, and collaging together whatever this is. It has this vaporwave, looped sample feel to it. Perfect for the rainy, neon world of this record.

Still Wandering

About Nite Run: This song came about in a way that I’ve never constructed a song before: it’s the melding of two different songs, which happened to be in the same key, and roughly the same tempo. The first song, which was also called Nite Run, described the weird vibes I was getting when I would go for night runs in my sleepy neighbourhood. During the day, there’s lots of families out, people hanging in parks, very pleasant. At night, there’s this shadiness that permeates. Like all the “non-Pleasantville” people are out and about. The other song was called Is It Me?, and it was all about feeling really socially insecure, and feeling like most of my relationships had become so fractured because of the last year. Anyways, I took those two songs, took the parts of them I liked, cut up and sampled the vocal tracks, bumped up the BPM, and voila! 

In the end, I wanted it to feel like those night runs I was doing, but in the context of the album’s world: that sketchy, neon city. The cut up vocals ended up giving it a very disorienting feel, and the panning sample makes it feel like you’re passing music playing out of clubs as you run by.

Nite Run

About Interior: Another one of the original demos from 2018, which was meant to be another exploration of looped modular sounds, with no real dancefloor aspirations. The thing that really changed that was Joel’s bass part. That part took it from this meandering, meditative, drifting tune, to one of the most dancefloor-ready songs on the whole record. This one’s also got this wild cyberpunk feel to me; I’ve described this record as “the kind of music the kids in Akira would have danced to at the clubs in Neo Tokyo”, and this tune most exemplifies that. There’s a “night music” feel going on here. The field recording at the end was taken outside of a club in LA. I was waiting for a car, and heard some people excitedly describing the night, and just had to capture it. It’s a special feeling, that’s finally starting to return. It also just sounds like LA to me: the neon-feel, the sound of cars passing, it all just makes me think of all the beautiful late night experiences I’ve had in that city.

Interior

The third in the Interior series.

About Translation: The final track on Interior, and rather than end with a turn towards more quiet, introspective tones (which is traditionally how I tend to end records), I wanted to end with a bit of a celebration. This song has gone through a number of different variations, but it wasn’t until I dropped in the microsamples and extended sax solo at the end that it really hit the mark.

This one does demand something from the listener though. The kick drum doesn’t even come in until the 3:30 mark. I do think people will be rewarded if they’re able to really live in the world of the song for the first half, until the big party comes in. The quiet parts of a song make the loud parts hit even harder, right?

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if this type of big, positive ending was the right fit for this record, but I’m really glad the folks at Cascine convinced me to not only keep it on the record, but have it wrap the whole experience up.

About 2 AM (Real Love): This song came about in really unique way for me: I had created an instrumental track, a very balearic-feeling, downtempo track, that had almost a touch of a Sade vibe to it? Anyways, I ended up sampling that track and creating something that sounded like it fit in the world of the record a lot better. I also knew I wanted to have Cecile add vocals to at least one of the tracks on this record, and this one was the perfect fit. Her and I did a couple tours together in 2017, and I truly think she’s a genius. She has an incredible amount of control over her voice, but her talents far exceed just the technical ability to sing. The melodies and textures she creates are truly unreal to me. I had no doubt in my mind what she would send back to me would be perfect, and it really was.

About Swimming: This is one of the first songs I made for this record, some three years ago. It benefited so much from Joel Ford’s (who mixed the record) guidance. When I first sent him the original demos he said he could hear slivers of “early 2000s French house music”, even though I was hearing was colder, more modular-based synth sounds. Anyways, that note sent me down a rabbit hole which resulted in the record you’re hearing today, and Swimming is one of the songs that benefitted most from that note. This track is truly meant for a dance floor. I’ve spent a lot of the last few years trying to craft “ambient music that you could dance to”, but this one is about as close as I get to a DJ tool.

Perspective was written during the same season as my last EP, Breathing Tides. After a long, difficult year, I wanted to try and process everything through a collection of recordings. What came out was an hour or so of very quiet, peaceful ambient music; rather than express the anxiety and depression that I felt so strongly during 2020, I feel like these songs expressed some hopeful optimism. A truly refreshing feeling.

I wanted to keep the official release short (it's only three songs), knowing that I had a LP coming out later in the year. This left me with several unreleased tracks. I'm so happy that this song can be shared here on Catalog, as this community has given me an optimism about the future of music that I haven't experienced in quite some time.

British Columbia producer Jamison Isaak didn’t anticipate an adulthood of globe-trotting songcraft, but teenage exposure to iconic French house music videos cast a spell on him that still holds.
