the fourth and final song off of the unreleased WITA EP. this song was a turning point for us and a genesis point for the other songs on the EP.
it went through many iterations, but ultimately we are so happy to share this song in its purest form with the world :)

familiar is the second piece of the unreleased  WITA EP alongside ‘been there before’ and two others that have yet to be minted. 

sade has always been a primary influence for us, as we’ve been inspired by constant grooves and smooth sultry production. this song was born of the concept of feeling like you’ve known a person across multiple lifetimes, questioning if the purpose of life is just to connect with the people we are meant to be with.

this track is off of an EP that never was. we wrote it as a follow up to komorebi, to bridge into the next project. however the sonic direction completely changed in favor of what became "are we?" and so been there before and its companion songs are a unique moment of exploration in our sonic history. looking back, this material informed a lot of what we are currently releasing as we move toward "simple shapes". 

this song serves as a reminder that we are not our feelings, and that when things get tough the emotions surrounding whatever situation don't define us.

from just after the fabulist era, this song came to us after fabulist extended was released, as we began thinking about what we wanted to explore sonically. at the time, this was the most uptempo song we'd ever written. as we moved into what eventually became komorebi, meltaonin fell outside of the komorebi's overarching concepts of reflection and morality, and therefore wasn't included.

it remained always top of mind when we thought about where our music could go, with the sonics and lyrical imagery informing much of the music that was written later for komorebi. overall, it remains one of our favorite songs for its easy, energetic feeling combined with the songs overall dynamic shifts.

'forest element' is from the komorebi era. for this record we went to a small cabin in mendocino, CA. for 12 days we would wake up, take small hikes with our guitars, and then settle into writing for the day. the large wooden room had a fireplace, which we would keep burning as we drank a lot of tea and made komorebi.
this song was written, produced and recorded in that cabin, using found objects and some of the natural room tone.
