7.30.2021 - INSTRUMENTAL VERSION OF DEMO

The beginnings of the song really started on 7/31/2020, when my buddy Max Shakun sent me that guitar loop and chorus idea. I chopped it, added drums and recorded a prechorus but then let it marinate for a year. Almost exactly a year later I came back to it, reproduced the beat, re recorded the pre and chorus and wrote verses.

One of my first beats from freshman year of high school, very Pharell influenced. Still in my garageband days. 

Every day I'd come home from football practice, scour 2Dopeboyz for all the new music coming out (discovering the Kendrick Lamar EP and artists like Joey Badass, Kid Cudi, J Cole and all the amazing artists coming out at the time at the beginning of their careers), and would get to make beats all day. I was a sociable kid but I was still pretty shy, but girls from my classes would ask me to make a video of a beat I made and post it on their facebook wall - you can tell how long ago this was cause who on earth would do that now hahah. 

Seems like forever ago, crazy to think where only 10 years later I'd be performing at international festivals and working with artists around the world. I enjoy looking back - it reminds me even with how far I need to go, how far I've come

RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Backstory:
A couple years ago, I was seeing a girl in the city and one time while we were together she broke down and had a flashback from a previous sexual assault. It was my first time witnessing the effects of the trauma associated with sexual assault and it was eye opening. 

This song details my experience while with her and her own experience. 

When I reached out to her recently asking permission to release the song, she gave me her blessing and requested that I include a blurb about RAINN and all the amazing work they do. My hope here is not only that we can raise some money for a worthy cause, but that in telling this story and message it might reach other survivors and help them realize they are not alone and seek the support they deserve. I will never know what it's like to be in her shoes, but I hope at least in helping spread this message that someone out there realizes they’re not alone and it encourages them to do whatever they need to get support.

So a Ghanian producer whose work I absolutely love invited me out to cruise out to Ghana to make music with him. He produces for a lot of the top Afrobeat artists and his sound is absolutely incredible - I know that if I go we will make some crazy crazy shit that really pushes sound forward.

However, it's very expensive to go there. One of our first few demos for the Lé Vie project, this was birthed from Max and I were both losing it mentally at a crossroads in our life (hence  - peeling paint, on the walls of my mind). This is the midway point of that album transitioning from something happier to something a little more melancholy and dark. I hope even when you're in struggling times, you find a way out or atleast find solace knowing many people are in the boat with you and you're never alone as it may seem.

Made for Iowa, what I planned to be my first solo album, about being placeless in your early/mid 20s, which for me was floating between California and Connecticut, but also about the experiences/stories of the people around me whom I met throughout my journey. Although this song doesn't exclusively or specifically reflect my personal life experience, I hope it accurately depicts what I saw some go through while floating between LA and Hartford.

As soon as I heard the loop looping, it gave me Phil Collins In the Air Tonight vibes and that dictated the direction it went in.

#624 - Not Like This (I Don't Wanna) - Demo Version

At this point we had already started the Water in the Ocean demo a month prior and this were slowly starting to take shape - trippy vocals and guitars w rap drums, this much we knew but were still figuring out the right balance of the two. Still continuing on the idea of fully diving into fuzing the energy of rap drums and indie vibes, this one came about from us both listening to a ton of Tame Impala and me being influenced by the wave Lil Pump and Smokepurpp had that was taking over. Big Bucks by Smokepurpp had just come out and I wanted to combine something with the bounce of those drums and that energy/tempo but with trippy vocals and guitars

This Lé Vie project was my first tour and brought me to playing my first music festival (Nos Alive) in Portugal. When it ended, that was what propelled me into focusing on being a solo artist.

#496 - Which Way To Go

Recorded 05.03.2020, Bass/Guitar sauce added 12.18.2021 

After the Le Vie project ended in February of 2018, I immediately started working on my debut album and trying to hone in on my sound. Most of my initial demos had vocals recorded straight through the mac mic because that was right around the era where harsh lofiness was in style and it seemed like a cool way to differentiate my voice. After that, i started stacking the vocals heavily and thats era of this recording - the vocals on this are stacked and less melodic because it wasn't really until 2021 that my songs had more melodic poppier melodies. This beat goes crazy though, and when i retouched it a year later with bass from my friend Diogo and guitar it went to a whole new level (which I did while up in remote snowy belfast maine, where I was retreating to revisit and finish some of my earlier demos).

The most important thing about this demo is after I made this beat (which I initially made for Portuguese rapper Dengaz but decided to keep for myself) was that immediately once I wrote a chorus I consulted my closest supporter and one of my best friends JJ (who I ended up writing my third album about after his passing), who helped me workshop the focus the song a way from a more melancholic  topic (which all my initial "IOWA" demos had) to more themed around a girl, which being stuck in Europe during Covid I had plenty muses to inspire the lyrics. I cherish the advice he gave me and must say that my music got infinitely saucier with his consulting, and I look forward to sharing many wonderful stories about him with whoever mints this, he truly was one of a kind and a person that influenced all three of my albums.

#727 Leonor (Joel's Anthem) - Demo

This was actually the very first demo we made, Max had sent me that guitar and Magnolia by Playboi Carti was huge at the time, which heavily influenced this song and gave me the idea to fully dive in fuzing the energy of rap drums and indie vibes. But it was this demo that led to me leaving LA and going to the east coast to make this album with Max. This project was my first tour and brought me to playing my first music festival (Nos Alive) in Portugal. When it ended, that was what propelled me into focusing on being a solo artist.

For a long time I've ruminated on posting my full musical journey, like from the very jump, but first I want to test the waters. Consider this that test. This takes place 10 or so years into that journey - from 2018, written about moments with a person I'll never get to see again.
