Backstory:

Created in my Los Angeles apartment in Fall of 2013. This track began the same hour Addison Chase (of Cosmic Compositions) reached out to me to be included in their next Avant Garde Series for Sun Ra.  After telling me my track "Astral Traveling" for **Cosmic Compositions Avant Garde Series Vol.1 [Pharoah Sanders]** was one of his personal favorite tracks as well as one the fan favorites, I was pretty inspired to jump into this flip without a moment's delay.

Both of these Artists we were paying tribute to were some of my biggest inspirations musically over the years.  Hearing their music always made me feel like my creative intuition to embrace the abstract and create contrasts between chaotic moments and peaceful/harmonious moments either  through sudden unpredictable shifts that would feel jarring to most people or through slow builds that tell a story that may or may not have a resolve, This was something I always got pushback on from friends but was something I myself was proud of.  Methods both Sun Ra & Pharoah Sanders both implemented often. So when the chance was presented to pay official tribute to & honor these legends, I made absolutely sure I came with my A game and made tracks at least I could be proud of.

"Spring Chops In The Fall '' was created in Ableton Live, but it was also the 1st song I used the Original SP404 compression and isolation on.  I really wanted to flex the art of micro-chopping and show off my ability to turn entire songs into a instrument, rather than cherry picking the obvious part(s) most people would usually gravitate towards. So I flipped my chosen track multiple different ways while still finding a way to sequence all the change ups in a way that told a cohesive sonic story.  Honor A Legend, Create A Journey. This remains one of my personal favorite tracks to date.

Backstory: 

This one is lengthy,  some music is born from just sitting and making music. I have countless tracks I couldn't attach a backstory worth writing about.  while some music only exists due to specific series of events and would not exist otherwise.

This is definitely one born from a complex backstory that feels like a movie script trying to write out.  This gets pretty wild, strap in... 

526 weeks ago to this date of upload (10/15/2023) on September 11th, 2013,  I was dropped off by homie Simon at Los Angeles Greyhound station around 2 AM, to catch my 4:30 AM Bus to Phoenix, AZ. Where I was headed to be the best man in my best and longest friend, Eric's Wedding.  This gets a bit crazy in a moment but need's a bit of context to set up the context.  We will return to the greyhound station momentarily. 

So, I'll do my best to condense this part.  I obviously knew about my best friend's wedding long in advance.  A few keynotes:  

1.)  Eric had been holding my entire cassette collection along with my physical album masters (A-DATS and DAT tapes) in his garage in phoenix since like 2010...  I was very hyped to be united with my collection which was thousands of cassettes to show off to all my homies in Los Angeles.  This would require a Car to drive them back which was the original plan. (spoiler alert: I did not end up being able to take my collection back to Los Angeles at that time, which honestly worked out for the best or they probably would have been lost 6 months later)  I did get a few hours to reunite w/ them and inspect their condition.  I know Arizona is hot AF, so I spent years afraid my collection would melt in that garage.  I took a few photos and posted them to instagram in real time.  One of those photos would later be collected by @cxy as a 1/1 on foundation:

2. Eric was my best friend since I first moved from NJ to Tampa when I was 5 years old,  He was deeply ingrained into life, until he moved to a different state.  So he let me know our friend, and my ex-girlfriend whom I dated from the late 90's - 2006 would be attending the wedding with the guy we broke up over.  That break up moment in time was solidified over a 14KT beat in 2006 which was released on "Crush Your System" in 2007. Under the context of this news at the time, I was not looking forward to the awkward reunion even though we always remained cool after. (Spoiler Alert: I ended up loving her boyfriend after getting to meet him and spend time w/ him) 

3.) I was in a relationship at the time, and Eric figured it wouldn't be awkward since I would be attending with my gf at the time who also owned the car we would be driving to and from the wedding to bring back my cassette collection.

4.) A few days prior to the wedding,  my ex and I had a very bad break up (context provided in the back story of:

I condensed it as much as possible, but all of those factors and events play a critical role in how the next part of this story plays out.  I'm very hard to upset,  I'm able to brush so much off in life and remain peaceful in my heart.  But if you combine (part 2) of my back story for "Lua Cheia", with the keynotes I just provided. A super, completely out of f***'s given Dutch as he is dropped off in the middle of the night to catch a bus alone to his best friend's wedding should make more sense.  

I had two large suitcases with me,  One carrying my clothes, and critical documents my ex left behind (birth certificate, proof of 100& Navajo records, Social Security Card) A lot of vital stuff you wouldn't want in the hands of strangers.  This was with me, because on the way back from phoenix, I had to stop in Las Vegas where her parents lived to pick up my friend Ivera who was moving in with me. So since i'm a nice guy, I planned on dropping all those important documents off with her mother who I spoke with beforehand about doing.  

The other suitcase had studio equipment in it,  Sp404, APC40, Laptop, etc...  

Again, all this is critical info leading up to understanding my state of mind during what's about to happen next.

So I walk into the Greyhound station, wearing a Hat with a hoodie over it, headphones in, wearing my backpack and dragging two heavy bags of luggage behind me.  I make a right aftering entering,  and some ragged middle aged white man, wearing a bandana looking like a cliche fresh out of prison tough guy is lying down on the floor next to the front window and immediately tries to get my attention.

I have no idea what he said, because I was blasting music in headphones, but I said admittedly in a rude tone "I can't hear you, I'm just here to catch a bus, not socialize, but have a good night"  then I scanned the room and looked for a place I could sit alone, with a full view of the station.   So I walked to the back right corner,  Sat down,  put my luggage in front of me and extended both my legs on top of my luggage.  There's still 2 hours before my bus arrives.  I'm sitting in this station listening to music,  thinking about the events of last two weeks, thinking how embarrassed I am, knowing I'm going to have to explain why I took a bus to the wedding without my GF, and thinking about the Cassettes I was so hyped to bring back home that I no longer was gonna be able to do...    I wasn't sad, I was super angry.  My spirit didn't feel defeated, It felt on fire ready to explode...     As I'm sitting and processing everything, I keep peeping the same ragged man who tried to get my attention talking to another guy who wasn't white, had a super tight slicked back ponytail and also looked like a cliche bad guy from a movie....    I know,  that sounds judgemental and in bad taste but bare with me.....     I watched them for like an hour bothering other people entering the station the same way they did me, but had no idea what they were saying..  I was blasting music...  Then the guy with the ponytail starts walking slowly in my direction super obvious...    I'm alone here,  I got this corner to myself..   He walks just slightly past me,   points to luggage and does a weird air traffic controller hand/arm gesture towards my luggage and the guy laying down...   I'm ignoring him, so he gets in my face trying to get my attention, so I pulled out one of my headphones and rudely said "yo! What do you want man?"  he said,   "My friend is trying to talk to you and ask you something"....   I responded "first of all, if your friend wanted to talk to me, why did you slowly waddle over here, and point at my luggage like a weirdo messenger, more importantly...  I don't care to hear what you, your friend, and anyone else has to say.  Pretend I'm not here, because I'm not even supposed to f***ing be here! I'm not having a good day, so no disrespect, but please leave me alone so I can process all the crazy sh*t happening in my life right now"   He said "Alright" then went strait, and made a left in the middle of the station, rather than going back the way he came..... I didn't see him again and stopped paying attention and figured they took the hint.  30 minutes passed and I had to pee really badly,  there was no way I was leaving my luggage unattended for a second,  So I dragged it behind into the bathroom....    The next thing I felt was getting punched in the back of neck (thankfully my hat and hoodie made it to where it kinda shifted the blow so it wasn't direct, but it was enough to send me flying forward, ripping my earbuds out and knocking my phone out of my hand and into the bathroom wall and the battery separated from it.

Probably the most important part of this story is the song I was listening to while I walking into the bathroom and when I got struck:

If you've never heard this song before,  this jawn is hard AF...   The type of music you put on before you are gonna fight....    I was already more mad than I'd been since my teenage years....     I flip around where I land fast first on the bathroom floor and immediately see these two cliche prison break extra looking a** suckers pointing a gun at me....

(Remember what I had in my luggage, The documents, Equipment....   I want you to think of every single event that leaded up to this moment to better understand what  happens next)

As soon as I saw those two guys, with zero pause or hesitation, I sprung from bathroom floor like a damn cheetah, arms behind me like i'm naruto running and slammed my chest into the barrel of the gun and went absolutely apesh*t yelling half crying and half laughing repeating do it b*tch!!!  and making fun of how they turned out to perfectly live up to my judgements of them looking like raggedy prison escapees..     I don't think they expected me to resist, let alone bark back and much louder....   Security was in that bathroom so quickly from how loud I was, and then I shifted my anger onto the security guards, still yelling and cursing (very out of character for me) about how insane it was that I watched these guys bothering everyone in that station for almost two hours and knew they were up to no good, how on earth did you let them stay in the station and stalk people....  Actual cops came, arrested the two guys,  My bus is now here, and the cops are talking about arresting me cus I just couldn't calm down...    They held up the Bus and finally let me go....    I now get on this bus at like 4:50 am, find a seat and the Bus driver says, we are gonna to make a one stop just before exiting California (towards the border) and said I advise everyone to get food and use the restroom when we stop, because after that he's not stopping, He also said in a very serious tone "No one for any circumstance get out of your set and approach the front of the bus"  Keep in mind....  I never got to use the restroom...   I was jumped almost immediately after entering the restroom and the cops almost made me miss the bus...  I've never ridden A Greyhound before and it was pitch black.  I was unaware there was a restroom on the bus...  So I'm holding my bladder, unable to process what just went down, watching my phone gps slowly approach the town he said were stopping in, and then watching us pass the exit and enter the desert where there is nowhere to stop or turn around for a very long time...    Everyone is sleeping on the bus... the lights are off, and I'm in the middle of the bus,  I try speaking up asking why we didn't stop but he didn't hear me...  So I got up out of my seat to go ask him,  I guess the lights are motion detection cus it got super bright and the bus driver literally yelled "WHAT DID I TELL YOU ALL NOT TO EVER DO!"  I whimpered,  I'm sorry but you said we were stopping and that once we passed that exit, there would be no more chances to stop the bus, I've had to use the restroom for hours really bad...   He said, the plans changed and to sit back down and hold it...   (Now, I wasn't aware there was a restroom on the bus until after Eric picked up, but that damn bus driver knew there was a restroom on the bus and didn't tell me)   This trauma, stacking on top trauma...     Eric takes me to a gas station, since the place we got dropped off at wasn't another station,  but like a weird desolate parking lot...     and I just relay the same info to him I just wrote about....  Not the greatest way to start what's supposed to be one of the happiest few days of his life huh?  We joked about that, as that's what we do... Laugh off and make light of the hardships we are handed...     It wasn't until I laid down alone to try a nap that I was able to process what happened and how stupid my reaction was and that I could have died.   Now on top of everything else I already was embarrassed to have to explain to the family and wedding party, now I had this unreal story added to the mix...  I think that was the 1st time I ever even entertained the thought of suicide if even only for a moment...  It was my ultimate low, the fire in spirit was used up...  Now I am sad beyond belief...       When I woke up,  Eric I joked about the time I was working at Subway, and the same thing happened,  where I was robbed at gunpoint,  they made Eric lay on the floor, and I refused to, made jokes about making them a sandwich and even scolded them for taking the quarters out of my tip jar...  It was nice being around my best friend again, and my mood shifted pretty quickly, because I wasn't trying to ruin the mood or memories he would have attached to these few days...      He reunited me with my collection briefly, and then we had to head out to drive to Tucson, where they had the National Observatory rented out for their wedding reception.  The entire wedding party met up at a hotel close to the location near Kitt Peak. We vibed, drank and all went to bed....       The next morning,  A lot of us met up in the gazebo, next to the pool, to have coffee and talk...  My Childhood Ex Athena and her boyfriend, Eric's Dad, his dad's friend, Our best friend Brian... and some people I didn't know....   I had my laptop w/ me and decided I needed to process some emotions and stamp the timeline the way I know how to do best....  I went into headphones and started making music haha.....    2 Hrs Later....     The first draft of "Greyhoundblap" was saved...   We drove up the mountain,  had the most magical experience at the observatory ever..   You could literally see the spirally Galaxy of Andromeda with Binoculars..    As I was looking at it,  A shooting star appeared...  The Milky way was so vivid it was like you could touch it....        When we got back to the hotel that night,  while everyone was swimming,  I continued working on the track,  Adding change up, adding keys,  vocal samples and finalizing what would be titled something that involves the name "Greyhound" in it haha.

Next Day was the Wedding.....      

Life is crazy B.    

 Thus, "The Hardest" was born.

Backstory (ACT I):  
"Chill Gawd, Chill" [It's all connected]

In summer of 2012, shortly after permanently converting from FL Studio to an Ableton Live main.  The homie Kaelin Ellis (f/k/a Mr. Mockwell) sent me a few drum loops to get busy and chop over.   I was still new to using Ableton, but I was able to quickly execute ideas from start to finish in a way and at a speed I was never able to pull off using FL Studio, Logic, Mpc2000, Mod-Edit, etc...  

I wasn't in album mode at the time,  I was just having fun quickly making beats and exporting them without over thinking.  (2012-2014 Soundcloud Era was a magical time! all the legends uploading microwave tracks daily they just finished making)  

I ended up cooking up a track super fast, sitting on the floor of my (at the time) unfurnished new apartment in San Pedro, CA overlooking the Port of Los Angeles.  As per protocol of the times,  I didn't overthink it,  exported it and immediately uploaded it to soundcloud.  Shortly after, I did become much more comfortable with Ableton Live, which was reflected in the crazy amount of output I had during that  2012-2014 Los Angeles Arc of my life. This particular track for me personally, didn't feel up to par since it was basically a quick warm up track.  At that time, there was an upload limit on soundcloud (before pro was introduced) so this track ended up getting deleted from my SC page along with many other tracks made before I finally decided to pay for more upload space haha. Backstory (ACT II):
(Origin Story) "The Uproot" [The End of the Los Angeles Chapter begins]

The very first track created for "The Uproot" titled "The Firelighter" only exists because I was at my wits end about to get evicted from my 2nd Apartment in Los Angeles for the same reason I got evicted from my first apartment.  "Love?"....

After a long stressful day at work, where I did Master QC for Film, TV,  Stream, DVD & Blu Ray Warner Brothers and absolutely loved it and was the best at my job. The guy who worked the night shift and took over my bay to do a different job than I do never showed up so I had to stay late (un-paid) doing back to back Ad-Pub for the movie "The Hangover 3" which for reference was 180 variations of the movie trailer, where you had to carefully monitor multiple scopes i.e. CIE Chromaticity, Histogram ,Waveform Monitor, Vectorscope, DB, LUFS, while also watching and listening for audible and visual errors, Only different regions have very different and strict regulations around specs.  2 hrs in, my direct manager called and said my co-worker was fired, and told me that I would need to switch to night shift starting the next day, because Ad pub was the highest priority due being it generated the most revenue and he couldn't trust anyone but me to do it.  I'm a team player but my deal with warner brothers was I don't work nights (because I was also a musician that (at the time) did a lot of DJ/Beat set gigs) and asked if I could just do them in the day,  He told me that they are purposely delivered to us to be done overnight, plus he would still need me to do my normal master QC work in the day. So basically I was just informed, for the unseeable future I would need to work my normal shift 9-5, go home and come back before midnight every night for at least 4 hrs of unpaid work.  Which meant no more doing shows, or events.  My world was just rocked, since I already had shows lined up.   I told him, I'm going home now and we'll talk about this in the morning if that's ok.   Shut everything down, and rode my bike home in silence...   Just as I carried my bike up the stairs and went to open my door at like 9:30pm, my landlord (who just happened to be one of the neighbors my apartment shared a wall with) w/o a hello or any context or small talk told me very compassionately. I know [Redacted] isn't here right now which is why I stayed up to make sure I caught you.  He said that he understands and sympathized with my situation and loved having me as neighbor and tenant but he couldn't sit by any longer and show her  grace after sharing a wall with us and all the neighbors witnessing and complaining how chaotic my (ex) GF was time and time again and told me I can only stay if I promise to never let my (now ex) back into the apartment or property again or I would also have to be evicted. He knew we moved in together as a couple, but remembered that when we were trying to get approved, putting her on lease drastically raised our deposit, so he did us a favor and let the lease just be under my name, but allowed her to live there.  (For context: He was a super nice, sweet guy, very rare in a landlord) He had already given her warnings and too many neighbors complained for him to not take action and since she wasn't on the lease and he was just trying to be nice letting her stay.. It was now on me to make a choice.  What a day this was turning out to be.

I was alone, losing my mind, feeling stupid and embarrassed that my entire apartment complex knew what was happening and all felt bad for me or thought I was a sucker for putting up with that madness and kept letting her come back. I was spiraling pretty hard taking this all in once. My phone rings, and my heart drops, dreading who could be calling. I was ugly crying in the middle of breakdown. I'm pretty disorganized so I tend to forget to save peoples names on my phone.  I picked up the phone and it was Kaelin.......I didn't have time to switch modes and play it cool.  He could tell immediately I was going through something heavy. He asked what was going on, He already had previous context so he wasn't surprised to hear any of what I just was told by the landlord. and he didn't try to give me any advice, or bad mouth my ex or try to sway the choice I had to quickly make.  He calmly told me to be quiet, breathe,  Open up ableton, and focus all that rage and frustration into a song..  He wouldn't get off the phone until I actually opened up ableton.  Once I said it was open, he said,  Love you, everything will be alright, as soon as I hang up don't waste any time, focus this energy you're feeling right now into music....  

The next morning "The Firelighter" was uploaded to Soundcloud and people went nuts.  (this was also deleted from sc)  but exists as the first track that plays on demo version of "The Uproot" album

A few months later,  I had a show with Soulection and Ahwlee,  My boss was cool with me requesting the night off since I did it weeks in advance. But the new boss at Warner brothers above my boss fired me for calling out. I found out a few weeks later from my old boss that 40% of the most integral people were laid off with no warning.  Told me, I would have lost the job even if I didn't call out so I shouldn't feel bad, and told me not to worry that he will always be a reference for me. (He kept his word, which is how I ended up doing Master QC for Netflix in 2016 very briefly)

Obviously... Lost my income so I lost that apartment shortly after haha, but that ties to other backstories for other songs so we will pick up on the rest of Los Angeles Uproot backstory when we get those songs.... Now let's tie this to the song all this world building leads up to directly shall we?

Winter/Spring 2014:  Welcome to Yetiville

So I'm alone at my friend Sam's house in White Plains NY which is tucked away in the dope secluded area surrounded by lush forest (A welcomed contrast to Los Angeles, but once again feeling lost and angry and untethered, too much trauma back to back, any sense of comfort or home feels temporary...  I don't like this energy but I'm thankful for the blessing I was given to escape Tampa.

I'm in album mode finally. I have the life experience to meaningfully translate, I have the theme, I know the purpose I'm aiming for,  Let's hyper focus and harness those intentions.

As I'm sitting alone in the house while everyone's at work, I'm recalling the path that led me here and wondering where I will eventually end up where I can call home and feel comfort that doesn't feel fleeting...   I remembered that conversation with Kaelin from fall of 2013 where the album first began.  I still had the original drum loops he sent me back in 2012 and always felt I never did them proper justice, so I wanted to use them again and work Kaelin into the album he unknowingly set in motion.  But channeling negative emotions into music wasn't the route I was trying to go.   So I charged up my laptop,  rolled up a spliff and hiked deep into the forest until I found a clearing I could set up this little red folding chair at,  lit my spliff...  took about 15 minutes just staring up at all the trees swaying in the wind...    It was super peaceful and healing... It was very important that my energy was calm and grounded before I began touching this track.  Nature is healing....  I put on headphones,  Loaded up the drums.....    and created a soundtrack based on the motion of all the trees around me swaying in harmony... I worked on this track from afternoon non-stop (with a short battery recharge intermission, back out into the forest, sun was gone, but the moon was out and was full and bright enough to dance off those swaying trees in the dark.

Fast Forward to fall 2015,  After moving to Nature Preserve on the mountain w/ my Pops in Upstate NY,  After creating so new songs they wouldn't even ft on double album, After my friends GF spilled water on my Laptop in my hotel room while I was working at The Hospital in Manhattan, that had all the finalized sessions of The Uproot album on it, We now land back in Tampa, FL where I once again had to pivot, lose comfort, and harness that energy and those life lessons into a conceptional, very intention driven album.

It's all connected.

The Scramble was the 1st of 5 different flips of one of my favorite songs and videos of all time.

Unlike the majority of music created for "The Uproot" & "Traversal" at the time.  Which were either created in Attic using my KRK Studio Monitors, Or outside in nature in various sacred locations on the mountain (Sam's Point Preserve) either in headphones or using my little portable bluetooth JBL speaker. The Scramble was created on the 2nd story of the house, sitting on the floor, with my Laptop HDMI cable being fed to the TV screen, and my Audio interface being routed into my pops super analog diesel stereo system,  and playing through his huge speakers, but first a bit of pre-context is needed.  

My pops and I were constantly making time to be present and each shared music with each other the entire time I was living there.  We had rules,  No distractions, no interrupting and listening to the songs but usually, full albums from start to finish before we shared our thoughts with each other.  After a lifetime of him not appreciating hip-hop,  I first won him over with the album "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" by The Pharcyde, after explaining to him that he was sitting right next to me as a kid the moment I went from Listening to Kris Kross, and stumbling on a more mature and evolved form of hip-hop.  This very life changing moment in time was eating dinner, while we were watching In Living Color, and Pharcyde Performed "Passing me by" live as the end credits began to roll.  This changed the course of my life so it was important, I started with that album and he Dug it.  After months of playing hip-hop albums I loved,  there were some he liked a lot and some he said were horrible,  so I switched up my strat and met him where I knew his taste was.  Playing him the Thunder Cat "Golden Age of the Apocalypse" Vinyl and Flying Lotus's "You're Dead" Vinyl which he went ape sh*t over.

I had already purchased the Surface Outtakes when it dropped in the Summer, and showed my pops the video that dropped for "Eggs" the day it was released in august. He not only loved the song, but was blown away by the music video (My Pop's dig's the left field, far out abstract art in life.

Months Later,  The Surface Outtakes finally got a Vinyl Release.  I ordered it, paid for expedited shipping and we sat and Listened to it from beginning to end and he loved it.  Pointing out he remembered that "Eggs" song with the "Far out video!" hahah

He had already spent months talking sh*t about how me making beats isn't as respectable as playing an instrument.  A Convo that made me buy the Ableton Push earlier in the year and begin "The Long Story Short" improv, real time, no samples, one take live long form playing keys series in front of his a** hahah.

He asked if I would play the Video for Eggs again, so I did..  and he told me to pause it halfway through and got curious.   He didn't really understand hip-hop production no matter how many times I tried to explain it prior, he couldn't get past the sampling records part.

I explained that I understand, why he feels that way,  If someone is just taking 4 or more bar loop from a song,  not altering and just adding drums,  but I explained to him that even though I will also do this sometimes,  the way I have approached sampling from the first time I had to deal with limitations on Mod-Edit in 1997, was that I treat a record like a inspirational canvas,  and then I dissect that canvas down in the a million separate pieces and turn that into the instrument. 

He was impressed by that answer, but said "I hear you Dutch, but I can't make sense or wrap my head around what you are telling me,  why don't you just show and prove and i'll be the judge and call B.S. if you can't sway me"

I asked him to choose any of his records he wanted me to sample and I moved all my equipment downstairs and hooked it up.  When I was finished, he said...   "I really dig that far out video of the guy dancing in a disco space suit,  can you do what you say you can do with that"

I said....   "Bet"

So I bored him for hours, with all the tedious prep work that takes place before I can even begin to make the music and he went to bed, and told me don't worry about the volume,  do what you gotta do.  I'm not worried about it being loud.

I didn't want to start making the beat without him witnessing it,  So I took that night to experiment with new processes,  new plug in chain methods to better replicate the thing he loved most about Jazz music....  The Call & The Response...  

This would change how I approached music moving forward and also gave me my very distinguishable signature sound that people love that I've since tried to push even farther.     The Goal was to make music that sounded analog and aged, as far from modern polish as possible while using Sidechain Compression and Delay as the main instrument..   Shifting the priority of focusing on having the swing and movement being driven by the drums, and rather achieving this movement, swing, call & response through the chops,  via sidechain compression, strategically routed a million different ways.  My goal was to have the audio feel like it's alive and jumping out of the speaker and in the room with you.    

Up until this track, this was the longest time I ever spent working on a single track, I worked on it on and off from December 2014 into mid January.   

He said I was driving him crazy every day, working on the same song, but I was determined to achieve a specific sound I didn't know how to achieve which meant a lot of experimentation and trial and error.    Plus, any room mates, significant others unfortunately are used to being casual bystanders of hearing producers auditioning 309309302 different snare drums at max volume before settling haha.      I can make a dope beat in 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or maybe spend a year on a track.   This one happened to take around a month, being I needed breaks from self induced deafness and ear fatigue trying to pull this off haha.   Once I was Satisfied,  I exported and played him the final result and his mind was blown.   He said, "I should send it to the space suit guy"... So I hit up RINGGO (Mndsgn) and told him the story and that I planned to put it on The Uproot album.     "Do your thing my guy, sounds dope"   

Being that this song was the current evolution of my sound and where I planned on taking things more in future.  This definitely was intended to be on my upcoming album "The Uproot"    

But at the sametime as creating this,  I was finalizing the 2 hour tape to be sent to pressing "Chill Gawd, Chill" which was basically like 50 tracks I made 2012-2014 while living in Los Angeles,  most songs I made quickly in front of other producers with a short time limit challenge.    I was still proud of this body of work,  but it was 2015 and I wanted at least some of my more current evolution to be heard.  So I shifted some songs around meant to be on "Chill Gawd, Chill" which resulted in me accidently hiding them in an unnamed folder, inside another folder which I didn't find until 2019 which prompted the "Beat Hoarder" Series.  

but i made the fatal mistake of pulling "The Scramble" / "Evolution of A Shrug" / "OneForShoes" / and "Lamb's Bread" from The Uproot at the last minute and put them all on "Chill Gawd, Chill"     

But I needed to make one last track for the tape,  Something that embodied the carefree fun spirit of 2hr Tape, while also being a timestamp of where I was sonically at that very moment.   

The Day before sending the Masters to the pressing plant,  I decided to keep in mind my pops critique about sampling, and made a beat, sampling myself playing. This became the title track of the album "Chill Gawd, Chill"

The Scramble is a special track to me,  It marked a creative shift in my sound, I've gone back and re-flipped EGG's like 10 times since... haha.     

 I gotta send love to Mndsgn, because he's not only one of the most chill, humble and talented humans I've ever met. but he's given me so many years of inspiration all the way back to the klipmode days w/ Devon Who, Knx, Suzi but he stays consistently making inspirational and transcendent art.

2020 Harris Cole Discord Sample Challenge.  

From 2019 to Present, instead of finalizing albums or focusing on refining projects,  I kept allowing myself to sucked into community sample challenges back to back,  So much so that they have became the bulk of time allocated to music which led to more than enough loose tracks to release them as an album.  I intended to do this in  2021 under the album name "I'll do it tomorrow" but....  I just kept taking on new samples challenges.  At one point, I had so much unreleased music, both short form and long form stacked up.  I released an free album on bandcamp titled "I got distracted" with over 60 tracks only meant to exist for a week or so to both serve as an apology for hoarding music as well as proof that I was well into my productive creative bag....   

I regretted uploading this almost immediately, because I still intended to release most of what was included separately.  but I didn't want to delete the album since it would remove it from peoples collections.

I have so much unreleased music stacked and have zero motivation to refine or release any of it as direct pipelines have all been severed and all platforms to release  music on feel extremely broken.

I honestly don't know what to do.  For the first time ever,  I don't even have any desire to create new art.  Day to Day survival, fight or flight.  

It all feels off and feels like the things I don't align with will only worsen rather than be improved on and that just makes me want to Vanish on my own terms.

Is it possible to do light work while also practicing the "Protect your peace" trend?.

That pseudo positivity practice instinctually feels like the biggest low vibrational bait trap out there.  "This person seems be going through it, having a really rough time,  I need to protect my peace and protect my vibration, they aren't as enlightened as I am"  

What a paradox huh?  

Self Preservation vs sacrifice.  which is really the low vibrational road to take.

This topic was always something I was passionate about.  Of course fight or flight is always a part of us, often the smart decision for self preservation is, cut ties, run...   This used to be a much harder fork in the road one would have to pause at before choosing a path.  Family members, Friends, Partners, Loved ones, acquaintances.    Choosing to evade conflict or turmoil or sacrifice your own peace for a chance of possibly lifting someone out of a dark place was not as easy to make IRL.  

In Modern times,  with everyone on the planet instantly connected at a moment's notice, all digesting fragmented short form thoughts and opinions.  quickly passing judgement and clicking "mute" is the new age "protect your peace".

Positivity isn't a personality trait, nor can it be a selfish act.  It definitely isn't something humans can realistically sustain in life without selfishly applying ignorance is bliss armor.  

I've wasted what feels like a lifetime, literally sacrificing peace by never giving on people.  The people I wanted to help heal the most, those closest to me,  I was never successful in breaking them out of their funk.  My Mother being the life long mission that I couldn't just give up on,  ironically I was finally able to break through and see positive change and impact after a lifetime of failing,  This song was specifically created for her.   The last year of her life,  she improved her outlook tremendously and I'm thankful to have witnessed the effort even if she ended leaving this world she found so heavy very shortly after.  

For all the people I cared about and couldn't impact through attrition and not giving up on them to "Protect my peace",  I was able to lift and inspire so many others in life.  I always wished there was someone to lift me, push me, motivate me, so how I could I could take the easy road and cut off someone clearly having a hard time just to "Protect my peace"    

Lightwork isn't supposed to be easy.   Don't let toxic positivity dressed up in cliche catch phrases fool you.  

Tiny Ripples are worth it.  It feels like the majority of the world, at least through the lens of social media, lost sight of this.  

Please, Remind your soul.

Backstory:

Late 2009, I was chilling at my friend Brian's townhouse in Tampa, FL (prior to me moving in),  and we were watching videos of Low End Theory sets at The Airliner in Los Angeles and random beat sets in general from like 2006 - late 2009.  There were no "Beat sets" happening in Tampa at the time, so our only window to see instrumentals being rocked in front of a crowd was online.  We were romanticizing about how dope it must be to live in a city that appreciates instrumentals in a live setting, and at one point in the conversation we had one of those "Jinx!" moments, where we both mentioned the same observation at the same time.   I can't remember the exact wording used,  but we both basically picked up on how heavy and often most people playing live sets would trigger the SP404 (& Other Samplers) Beat Repeat or glitch FX....    If only we would have known, people would be overdosing on & overusing triggering those FX to fill time during live sets for the next two decades all over the globe haha.      

I had my Laptop with me, and was using FL Studio at the time, so I downloaded the Plug in "Glitch 1.3" and started to make a beat trolling....    and thus "FEEDBRA!NER" was born.   

Bonus Fun Fact:

The first person that I personally remember, besides Prefuse 73 back in 2001 to use this glitch/stutter effect in beats was Sweatson Klank (fka Take) back in 2005/2006,  So when he hit me up to submit a Remix for his upcoming album "Only Mountain".  I pulled out that "Glitch" Plug-in one more time to pay tribute...       I remember vividly him saying,  I love how you flipped my track, but I don't like all the Stutter/Glitch FX in it because even back then,  he said it became way too overused in the scene.  He asked if I could Submit it without all the FX,  but back then, in fact the entire lifespan of me using FL Studio (2005-2012) , I didn't know there was an arrangement view.   So how I sequenced out my beats back then, was I would individually export each 4/8 bar loop, and sequence my beats by cutting and pasting them in the intended order via Sony Sound Forge.  Then I wouldn't save the original FL Studio Sessions,  So I couldn't re-send him a version without the FX, cus the session was already deleted haha.

Backstory:

As Hurricane Idalia slowly approaches,  I'm eerily  reminiscent of 2017,  After a decade of being Uprooted, Traversing state to state, and a lifetime of living in apartments,  I finally rented my first house.  I wanted a home I could create at night or day, free of anxiety or worrying about neighbors if I had the volume too loud while creating music.   I moved in May of 2017, and finally just reacquired all my long lost personal belongings that were scattered across the US being safeguarded by trusted friends.    

My House was a half mile away from the gulf of mexico.  Close enough to walk or ride my bike or scooter to nature, relax and breathe easy...   I'm most productive when I have nature nearby so this was heavenly, the only trade off was isolation from friends / family,  but I made that isolation work leaning into recording daily rambles and evolving portals....

Fast Forward to September and the Category 5 Hurricane Irma was projected to make direct landfall literally right over my house.  I just required everything precious in the world to me as well as invested in new studio equipment and furniture.  Being .5 miles from the ocean, My house was in the most severe evacuation zone,  at even at a category 2 hurricane, a direct hit would put my house 12 feet underwater minimum.  

The anxiety and fear I felt was unmeasured. So I did what I do best when I feel powerfulless,   I transmuted that emotion into music.

As I was creating,  I imaged the soundtrack to the eye of the storm.  Calm and clear while causing absolute devastation around it....   and tried to end the song with the resolve of peace and relief felt by anyone with RNG lucky enough to emerge on the other side of the storm safely...      

Originally meant to be on the 1st of 4 unreleased albums created since releasing Traversal in 2016,  "The Waiting Room" originally titled "Workin' Thru it" only saw a soundcloud release, and was uploaded the moment it finished.

After exporting and uploading.  I packed my most sentimental belongings up and whatever expensive studio equipment I could fit in my car,  locked my doors and drove inland to stay with good friend and fellow Equilibrium group member, Celph Titled to weather the storm as far away from the storm surge as possible.  Thankfully,  RNG blessed Tampa that day and IRMA shifted last minute but it's always been impossible for me to celebrate missing a direct hit from a hurricane, because it means that direct hit just destroyed other people's lives..   

I have no Idea how things will turn out this time around,  no one does...  I just know it's been one of the hottest years of our lifetime and this is just the beginning of hurricane season.  I really really really tried to escape this state and city so many times.  I hope the next time I have a chance to leave Tampa, FL     I don't return for a very long time.

Backstory:

I almost missed this sample challenge.  Ended up loading up the sample folder the day of the playback stream and among all the amazing violin samples was a super long experimental recording I fell in love with and then I stumbled on the recording of her two cats doing asmr <3

I love cats so much so there was no way I wasn't taking this chance to use those samples and create a theme around them.  As I listened to the audio file fully, I imagined the stages of anxiety domesticated cats must go through when their human family/friend is away...  

"are they ever coming back"
"who is going to feed me"

Those stages of emotions that the seemingly independent feline go through... from no cares in the world to how i am going to survive and relief they must feel once we return.

I made this track in a few hours, super rushed but super inspired and drove my cat nuts the entire time blasting it through my studio monitors in the process.

I have a more refined version of this track but I love this initial, real time live demo version so much.   I'm thankful I was able to finally make time for this challenge  even if it was right at the submission deadline buzzer.   This track makes me happy,  I'm thankful I received the blessing to share it <3.

Backstory:

I was late to begin my flip for "Catalog Cook Off 012 (Jon Waltz)"
I was planning on taking a brief hiatus from sample challenges but saw it was Jon's Birthday,  Downloaded the stems & quickly did my initial flip ( Version I - Deep House vibes ) Time passed... distracted, multi-tasking, survival pivots and all that jazz, I realized the deadline (Listening Party) was the next day and all I had was a super quick unrefined flip I did on his birthday.  Carved out some time to dedicate to refining my initial House version that night.  Took a gummy & opened Ableton Live and began refining my flip,  swinging the drums more, mixing, mastering and all that Jazz....    but.....

Gummies have this RNG aspect to them...  It could take effect in 20 minutes, or 2 hours later....   Not Ideal for ADHD.....   Don't know exactly when it kicked in, but I noticed the sun was out, and somewhere in the refinement process,  I got distracted, Pivoted, opened a mini Portal and came to the other side of the session with a completely different version haha.  

We played both the initial unrefined b-day house version & this version during the playback stream.  I already checked the session and that gummy must have kicked in before I could save the more refined house version, and I altered the session so drastically that I would need to start all over from the b-day session and start the refinement process all over again.  After speaking w/ @jonwaltz we decided to add both versions to the forever library (50/50% splits)...   I have some other creative deadlines and life stuff before I can go back in and refine Version I again for release, but it will eventually also be added to the forever library =)

Created in the wake of great struggle and turmoil, MC/producer Dutchyyy aka Dutchmassive’s latest project The Uproot is a testament to the power of music, family and personal resilience. In 2013, Dutch found himself on the tail end of a stint living in California. Facing the loss of his job, apartment and relationship, Dutch wound up in Tampa, Florida and eventually New York, couch-surfing, staying with friends and trying to figure out his next move.

“My man Sam Sleezy invited me to visit in NY. He spent months trying to motivate me to record new raps, but all I wanna to do was make beats. I recorded a few tracks that Apathy gave me (still unreleased) as well as my track for the SleezbagMekalekTape, meanwhile hiding outside alone in his hidden forest backyard. I was making beats, then my pops (who I had not spoken with in over a decade) invited to me visit him for the weekend in upstate NY, so I accepted, When I arrived I was surprised to find out my pops was the caretaker of one of the illest nature preserves in upstate NY on the top of the Shawangunk ridge mountains.”

Tucked away in one of the most beautiful natural environments in the country, Dutch began to work on The Uproot, a rich and highly personal work that showcases his ability to craft moving instrumentals. One can’t help but envision the landscapes that inspired Dutch’s process.

“My back and front yard had ice caves, waterfalls, forests and scenery that looked like it came from Tomb Raider meets Lord Of The Rings, on top of that, my pops’ knowledge and collection of music is next level. So I spent a year alone, building with him, inspired by this sacred mountain, creating music all day and night long, in the attic, in the basement, near the waterfall. During this time, I rejected and pulled myself out of any beat collective and just wanted to focus on art without any politics period, I rejected what society had programmed into me.”

With tracks like “The Firelighter” and it’s woozy, dreamy, pitched-down vocal samples or the jazzy minimalism of “The Stone”, The Uproot is full of chilled-out beats and introspective sounds. Featuring guest spots from Simon Sverdlov & Equal Status, Son Of Ziggy, and Sleepyeyes, the album maintains a free-flowing, meditative tone. Putting his mastery at twisting and flipping samples with ecstatic fervor on full display, Dutchyyy has maintained his status as a formidable voice in the contemporary beat scene. Experiencing loss, resetting and rebuilding is never easy, but to pull so much beautiful, life-affirming music out of the process is a feat in it’s own right. In Closing,

While I did recover the Hard drive that contained the original sessions for "The Uproot" in 2019,  Ableton couldn't locate most of drums and some of the samples. which is a disaster as my production style is centered around sidechain compression routed all over the place and changing the drums completely changes the movement and intentional swing/groove of the track. However, in May of 2020 I was contacted by my friend and fellow producer "Mecca83" who convinced me to take the time to finalize the album to the best of my ability and release it on cassette and double vinyl.  I agreed.

2 Days Later,  Height of the pandemic,  I received an Eviction notice from my house in retaliation for me reporting them for doing a fake black mold remediation on my house.   This changed the course of things in a major way as I was dealing with health issues, on top of losing my career teaching at the hospital and Florida not giving anyone access to their unemployment March 2020-August 2020.  My body was on the fritz, and now any sort of peace I had evaporated as I had to plan my next move with zero income,  I had places both in Los Angeles and New York I could move to but that would have required placing all my belongings from my 2 bedroom house that I literally just required in 2017 after years of bouncing and Traversing State to State but I proceeded to open up The Uproot sessions anyway to use what time I had left having access to my studio monitors to properly mix and master.  Unfortunately,  my mind just couldn't focus on the task and instead of refining old songs,  I did what I tend to always do when I'm overwhelmed, and just started making new beats from those old sessions, and then I just kept reflipping the same samples over and over a million different ways...    This was basically the turning event that made me lean into #EvolvingPortals and I kind of never looked back ever since.   Shortly after, my uncle called me and demanded I move in with my 90+ year old grandmother who wasn't handling the pandemic well.  I refused for selfish reasons as I knew there would be no way I could play music loud enough to mix down music properly, but after speaking to her and hearing how bad she was doing.  I put most of my belongings in Storage and moved into this 10x12 room I'm typing from now.   After moving here, I abandoned the idea of remixing down The Uproot and began my next evolution leaning 100% into creating music in real time and recording the whole process, something I dabbled with a few times living at my house, but after being uprooted again as some sort of cosmic joke days after agreeing to finalize this old album about being uprooted haha,  The thought of refining old music and attaching new energy to it while always trying to stick to the original vision was just not something I could bring myself to do....           So,  Only this Demo version exists....  and it is what it is...   and I've made so much new music since that helped me get through some tough times so I have zero regrets.

I'm finally minting this album because a major shift in my life is taking place.  As much as I rejected the idea of releasing this early version into the world knowing how it's final form sounded and hoping one day I would revisit it to bring that version back to life.   That Chapter has closed,  and in a way, if you couldn't already tell from all my backstories and subtle hints,  I'm preparing myself to close the book in general. Which is why documenting my life's work and attaching so much context has been a mission.   I will keep creating new art for as long as humanly possible, but I can't waste precious time going backwards to refine old energy. Every time I try,  I just create a bunch of new stuff haha.           

This album has so much back story, context and experiences woven into as it was intended to be a double album,  the rest of it you might know as "Traversal" =)       I reference these two albums often in backstories as they were the final bodies of work where I created with intentions of creating a meaningful full story that flows from start to finish.    It's been real time, improv, autopilot wizardry documenting expression ever since and I have no current intentions or desires to go back to putting this much time and thought into creating a conventional album again.

So many people Adore this album even in its demo form.  It's hard for me to share that same sentiment when I know what it evolved to become.

I'm releasing this as is, on chain as Side A and Side B.

After losing my mind living in Los Angeles (2012-2014) then having my spirit crushed moving back to Tampa Bay in record time,  I ended up Traversing to New York summer of 2014. In February of 2015,  My Pop's (Ziggy) who was the caretaker and lived on the property of Sam's Point Preserve for nearly a decade was blind sighted after receiving a call that the private nature preserve was purchased by the state and they would be replacing him as caretaker with a park ranger (my pops was chef, who by fate was originally offered this lifechanging position and opportunity at his fathers funeral (My Pop Pop) My pop always said he felt like that was his fathers final gift to him, so to hear news that he was losing his home and job was devastating.  To add to the stress,  This was place my father and I reconnected and closely bonded after nearly 15 years of bad blood and no communication.  We were both so happy and at peace on that mountain.  My family has always been poor,  my father worked hard his entire life, after nearly being killed working as prison guard before I was born,  he shifted to his passion of being a cook.   He worked multiple chef jobs and owned a hot dog stand when we lived in New Jersey.   I ended up moving to Tampa when I was 5 years old with my grandparents,  My Mother and younger Brother moved down a year later, and Father moved down a year after that.  He never liked Florida, and being far from his family but he worked every single day, never taking a sick day,  He opened a NY pizza shop in Tampa "Ziggy's Pizzeria" which closed down after his business partner robbed him and fled the country.  After that he worked endlessly as a cook at a sports pub in Town n Country.   He worked hard his entire life, just didn't work smart.  When I was 14 years old my parents divorced and pops moved back to NY.  As A teenager, I didn't understand the context... all I knew was he abandoned my mother, brother and me, which my mother was not ready for which resulted in me having to grow up fast and take on the parent roll.  So I resented my pops for nearly my entire teenage and adult life span.  

After reuniting on the mountain,  I learned the context behind their getting divorced and him moving back to NY and realized I wasted my whole life being angry at him for something beyond his control.  He always felt shame and guilt he was never in a position to help his children out in life financially after our child support ended. 

So now here we are,  reconnected, deeply bonded with mutual respect and that shame and guilt melted away as he saw me flourish creative and spiritually being on that mountain with him.   So finding out he was being displaced and Uprooted with almost no notice,  all he could think about was me, but NY is expensive AF.  Especially the area we lived, which he could not leave because his mother (my grandmother) lived close by with dementia and he had to be close to take care of her.   We searched far and wide and nothing was even close to realistic or affordable and we had to be out of there in 30 days.  I absolutely didn't want to move back to Tampa or Los Angeles so I offered to split rent but we just couldn't find anything in time except a small guess house attached to a friend of a friends house that we could only move to temporally.       

On March 16th 2015 the caretaker house was fully empty and we were about to drive off when he asked if I wanted to walk through one last time to say goodbye.   

I asked him if he would give me 1 hour in the house alone to say goodbye in a way that would help me process this abrupt change the only way I know how.   Making Music.....

I unpacked my Laptop and my portable JBL speaker and walked up the 3rd story Attic I had been living in and creating in the past year.  I loaded up one of my fathers favorite songs and set the timer...   One Hour. 

After I expressed,  I walked out to the jeep in tears and said "we don't even have internet so I can't properly stamp this moment in time"     He reminded me that there was internet in the welcome center and he had to leave the keys in there anyway so I could use the internet to do what I needed to do.  

A few minutes later,  I documented my farewell on SoundCloud.

and thus, "The Mountain" was born.

We didn't have much time we were able to live in the guest house we moved to and saw the stress my pops was under trying to find a place for us both where I would be able to make music and I made the tough decision of moving back to Tampa with the plan to move back to NY when I could afford to do so.       

This return to Tampa was soul crushing, but lead to the re-birth of my DailyRambles (The Reluctant Clap) series...    I ended up working a contract at a hospital in NY in spring of 2016 and ended up visiting my Pops in new place (A basement he was renting for very cheap in an amazing house less than two miles away from where we used to live) He was very happy and he wouldn't have gotten that place If he had me to worry about also so it made my choice to leave feel like it was destined, which helped.  I was only supposed to visit a few days after my contracted ended but ended up staying for a month, working on  the cassette version of the album I had just released digitally "Traversal" Shortly after returning back to Tampa, I was offered a place to live in Los Angles, so once again I was a rolling stone.     

I miss that mountain so much,  I often think of what life would be like if we didn't have to move,  I had access to free healthcare,  I was super happy but would I trade all of turmoil, discomfort and pain that Lead to everything I've created musically since if I could turn back time and stop the state from acquiring the nature preserve?...        Not a chance.......       because I know transmuting my experiences good or bad into art ripples out and helps others navigate through life.

Backstory:

One night, while scrolling through tumblr, alone in my Los Angeles apartment, on a random impulse I ended up sending a message to Vik (fka Viktor Stone / Vktrstn) who was the founder of  the infamous #AstralBasement Collective (one of the 1st "Lofi-HipHop" Collectives.   We knew of each other but hadn't spoken up to this point.  If I remember correctly, I think my message just said "Send me some drums to lay Chops Over" and gave him my email.    

A few hours later [Mon, Mar 25, 2013, 12:56 AM] I got an email titled "$$$$$$$$" with no words, just a file attached named "Drums4dutchy.wav".  About a week passed, between spending time with my GF and working I didn't have a chance to load the drums up, I honestly Didn't see the email until a week later when I reminded him not to forget to send me drums and he told me he already sent them a few hours after I originally asked for them.  I loaded them into Ableton as soon as I got home from work around 9:30pm, and uploaded my quick flip to soundcloud a few hours later just before the stroke of midnight.

and began working on 2.0...     but all good things must come to end.  And like most collectives that existed during that Golden Era of Soundcloud, everyone went their separate ways for the usual reasons most crews, groups and collectives do.  

I still have all the unreleased songs from 2.0 on an old hard drive and it still holds up to this day.


Fast Forward, to winter 2014 while in the attic of the house I was living in at Sam's Point Nature Preserve in New York.  While brainstorming and organizing my next official release "Chill Gawd, Chill" (The 120 minute Cassette) I decided to revisit that Session to remove the intro and extend the beat with some slight change ups.

A few months Later, The 2 Hour Tape was released

and thus "Untitled in April" was born.

Blue Screen of Deaf - Backstory:

In the great hard drive crash of 2011, A very irresponsible Dutchy lost all the music created that year. The only thing that existed from that era was all the unfinished versions found on scratched burned cd's for "the car tests" ; these are the files that have been recovered.

Fast Forward to Spring of 2012,  After months of planning and saying goodbye to friends and family in the place I called home (Tampa Bay) since I was a child.  I took the leap and decided to move to Los Angeles after taking what was supposed to be a 4-6 month long contract teaching at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.  Unfortunately, we taught them too well & too fast and the contract was cut short, only lasting a few weeks.  I was already committed to making Los Angeles my home but now I was limited on funds, and about to lose the hotel I was supposed to be at for months while searching for apartments, but As fate would have it,  I was about to get a life raft.  After jokingly posting on Facebook,  "I'm hungry, someone bring me some food".   Someone commented, "You're in Los Angeles?  I'm a huge fan of your music and my family owns a restaurant".  It was my day off, so I commented. "Come Scoop" jokingly, not realizing he would want to follow through.   Long Story Short,  We became good friends and that night would change the course of my life.  Meeting multiple strangers who became best friends. When the contract ended.  My new friend (Anthony) allowed me to stay with him while I searched for a place to move into.   During this time, I taught him and a few of his friends (who are now my close friends) how to use FL Studio.  He was a huge fan of my music,  so I played him a bunch of unreleased music I never planned on releasing.  He lost his mind when I was adamant about never releasing the music I was playing him.   What he didn't know was a few months prior on Xmas night 2011,  My Laptop filled with my upcoming Dutchmassive album titled "Romanticizing" along with every beat I made from 2008-xmas 2011 was lost when hard drive got corrupted and dealt me the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death.  I didn't have any of it backed up on extra hard drives.  All that remained from 2008-2011 was the crappy first draft versions I burned to CD's for "The Car Test" and well,  I didn't take care of those either so they all had scratches and were sun damaged.  So the things I was playing him,  where unfinalized early versions of songs that I know became so much greater than the versions I was left with.  He wouldn't take no for an answer and eventually offered to pay my 1st month's rent and my security deposit if I swallowed my pride and uploaded the few early versions I salvaged to bandcamp. He didn't want any profits from it, he just wanted those songs to exist online and be heard by the public. I agreed and moved into my new apartment a few miles down the road from him in May 2012, and Released the album In September 2012.

"WRM RAIN" - Backstory:

This track samples "Warm Rain" by Ahmed Sirour.  It was from his EP "The After 2am Sessions" was originally released May 5th 2011.  

The version of "WRMRAIN" that exists was not the final version,  I feel like I need to disclaimer that for pride sake haha.  The Final Version like, everything else on the album was lost when Laptop Crashed, and the only version I had was the 1st test bounce I burned to CD for the car test. 

Ahmed's EP came into my life at one of the most turbulent times,  and It spoke to me like no album had prior.   Every Melody, Harmony, Chord felt so familiar,  Like language from my soul I didn't know how to communicate myself.   I remember vividly being out of town, working the nightshift in the E.R. of a Hospital in Pittsburg and all the computers were down, and they were so busy and so angry and blaming us (The ones teaching them how to chart on the computer) and they were super Harsh about it.  I managed to escape for lunch, and made my way to the roof of the hospital in anticipation of my phone blowing up at Midnight for my 30th birthday (May 23rd).  I sat up there in silence, til about 12:45 and my phone never rang.  This was the first time in my adult life,  loved ones didn't call me at midnight to wish me a happy birthday,  So on top of everything else going on,  I broke down crying up there.   I put on headphones and hit shuffle and Ahmed Sirour "Warm Rain" came on.  It was like instant healing.  The Cleansing of the soul.   As soon as I returned back to Tampa,  I immediately loaded it up and flipped it,  which was fitting, because it was summer, and it was raining while I worked on it with the sliding glass door wide open.  I really wish I still had access to the finalized,  fully sequenced and mixed version,  but I'm thankful that any version still existed at all because it allows me to time travel and transport myself into memories I probably wouldn't ever recall without.

Backstory:
I began this project on April 9th 2015,  on the front porch watching the snowfall in Upstate New York just before Abruptly having to move back to Tampa, FL.  A few months passed as I let the reality set in that I was once again back in the state I kept trying to escape and I put all of that emotion and energy into finalizing my next album "Traversal" after deciding to hold off released the "The Uproot" (The Prequel to Traversal, which is still officially unreleased to this day)  I stumbled back onto the session I began in NY, and Finalized it with new energy  in Tampa, FL on November 15th, 2015 before working on what would be the Last track created for Traversal "Set Your Intentions"  then released the album on bandcamp on December 30th of 2015, and Jan 1st on all streaming platforms while living in Tampa, FL,  A few months later,  I moved back to Los Angeles,  dropped the 2nd Edition pressing of Chill Gawd, Chill which sold out instantly which is when Grand Garden Approached me to release Traversal on Cassette.   The album was re-released on Grand Garden Records as A Cassette only release with different songs not on the original digital version and a sequence that flowed more accurately to my intended vision of how the album should be heard as front to back complete story,  but this release didn't happen until December of 2016,  Which was a few months after my mother passed and once again had to return back to the State I tried so many times to escape haha.   So the album name really holds meaning as it was created while constantly in motion bouncing from state to state.

Backstory:

"Bright green and sticky, Lamb's Bread gives you energy and positive introspection."

I've held off on uploading this record even though it's one of my favorite songs of all time.  I've collabed with countless people over the years but 97% of the time,  that collab is a producer sending me a drum loop and I end up doing everything else, including most of the time, altering the drum loop and adding more drums, but this collab is the absolute exception.  

"Lamb's Bread" was created in KoreaTown (Los Angeles) in October 2013 right around Halloween at Sleepyeyes Apartment.  AshTreJinkins and I took the train to sleepy's crib to chill and when we showed up,  Sleepy had a plastic canister of :::air quotes::: "Flowers" called "Lamb's Bread".  We lit some Nag Champa then all partook in the  ritual of passing the "flowers".  You know those magic flowers that enhance taste, sight and sound and boost creativity =)

We then began talking about our favorite artists and albums to sample,  So i mentioned an artist I've sampled 390390394 times since the mid 90's [REDACTED] and I proceeded to transfer the full discography to Sleepy's harddrive.  What do 3 producers do when they get in a room after passing the creativity flower?   Rhetorical question!   We opened the DAW (ABLETON LIVE) and I began to show them my insanely quick workflow when it comes to setting up and preparing a sample to turn into an actual instrument through a billion tiny Micro-chops.   

This track has 3 change ups. It was the ultimate form of collaboration and something I was not used to.

1st part of the beat was all Dutchyyy.  Drums & Sample Chops....  
2nd part of the beat was Tre on Bass (except 1 note I shifted), Sleepy on chops and Dutch on Drums.
3rd part of the beat was Tre on Drums, Sleepy on bass and Dutch on the Chops

We all did a little EQ and mixing and the next day Sleepy sent over the track with the added Vocal samples and better master version in general.

I uploaded the track to Soundcloud a little over a week from when we created it and the rest was History.

The track has about 58k plays on Soundcloud, comments from legends and to this day remains one of the most requested songs to be uploaded to DSPS.

The track also caught the Ear of the well respected & highly elusive "GodsConnect" who's seal of approval was stamped by him creating Visuals around your track (Usually stuff with vocal samples)

"Lamb's Bread" was created during a transitional stage in my life,  A great shift in energy.  I had already begun working on what was supposed to be my next official album "The Uproot" and this was intended to be released on that album.   It's one of 4 songs I pulled from "The Uproot" at the very last moment and added to the critically acclaimed,  3 times best selling & sold out Cassette.  The infamous 2 hour Tape "Chill Gawd, Chill".   This decision was made because "Chill Gawd, Chill" was a vast collection of older songs I created 2012-2013 while living in Los Angeles,  but none of those songs except the albums title track were new or sonically represented my current direction of sound at the time.   I'm still a bit regretful for pulling these songs from "The Uproot" since it derailed the album for a time and then fate stepped in and destroyed the hard drive where all the master session files so that album still remains officially unreleased except a long form, early demo version which can be heard on bandcamp.

and thus, "Lamb's Bread" was born.

Backstory:

Created: Early May 2012 in my San Pedro apartment overlooking the Port of Los Angles.   Not much of back story for this one.   Though I do vividly remember making these back to back "WHNTHENGHTCMS PART I" & "WHNTHENGHTCMS PART II".   I was home alone after a breakup,  Nag Champa burning,  watching the last bit of daylight fade away and decided to keep myself distracted by being productive.  I remember it so vividly because I distinctly remember trying to open old sessions in FL Studio  of tracks I made prior to the great hard drive crash  of Xmas 2011 and getting really depressed that the ones that did load up where missing all the drums and vsts.   I had only been in Los Angeles a few months at that point,  Most of that time was spent either working at Cedars-Sinai, couch surfing at a new friends house, or just busy being distracted and in love.  I only made like 2 or 3 beats while living at my friends house up the street. "THE RARARA!" is the only one of those tracks I ended up adding to "Blue Screen Of Deaf". 

So shortly after moving into this apartment with my ex I moved across the country for, and I mean like the first week,  we broke up (for the first time) and I didn't know what to do with myself honestly. Being alone during the day was one thing,  but this was my first night alone in that apartment and I was dreading it, So as soon as it got dark it was finally time to get my zen on and get lost in creation.  I kinda blacked out after that moment, which is  normal when i'm alone getting lost in the DAW even to this day.  It's like time stops. I pop out from working and the reality is time did not stop at all. Like a Portal =)   

I didn't know it at the time but these would be some of the last beats I would ever make in FL Studio.  Shortly after these were made, Ahwlee entered my life and introduced to me to the real love of my life, Ableton Live =)

I was hesitant to put these tracks on the album because they were created after the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.  I added these two songs,  ANGLWNGS, and THE RARARA! to the album literally at the very last moment before I uploaded it considering when I released the album, I had already been using Ableton for like 5 months and wanted to keep the FL Studio tracks separate.   The one exception to this was "Just Be Yourself" which I saved to use for something I was more proud of.

I guess there was A backstory to these tracks after all.   It's pretty amazing being able to transport back in time and re-live moments attached to creating art.  I got that pit in my stomach I haven't felt in nearly a decade re-living this memory though.

Was chilling at a friends house watching horror movies & ended up putting on the movie Silent Hill for him to watch for the first time, and I ended up getting distracted in headphones working on music since I already saw the movie a bunch a times and needed a peaceful escape from all the horror movie vibes honestly haha.   So I went into my zen state, but decided to add A change up based on that creepy scene in Silent Hill where the Emergency Alarm starts going off and the world starts decaying & transforming into that terrifying world of ashes.       

and thus,  ESCAPE S!LENT H!LL was born.

Backstory: 
Before we time travel to the beginning, Let's start this at the very end.
"Chill Gawd, Chill" was the last song created for the album.  When I say last, I mean it did not even exist 48 hrs prior to the album being released .  The title track was created in Upstate NY at Sam's Point Nature Preserve on Feb 4th, 2014 the day prior to the Album being stealth released and immediately selling out on Feb 5th 2015.  
"Chill Gawd, Chill" held Bandcamp's top selling HipHop Cassette and Digital release for 2 weeks straight long after all copies were sold out. Before we get into how and why this particular track was made, let's time travel back to 2012 and visit my tiny apartment in San Pedro, CA. overlooking the Port of Los Angeles where this album first began.

Since this backstory will be revisited in detail in the near future when I mint the song "Medutayshun" (f/ Ahwlee) I'll Just summarize the important part.  My friend Kronika / Angel of Soulection introduced me to a produced named "Ahwlee".  We vibed and clicked pretty fast and he would come stay at my apartment and we would both be making beats in headphones on separate laptops,  Him on Ableton and me on FL Studio.  Long Story Short,  after multiple visits of him making entire albums in Ableton Live  while I was still working on One beat in FL Studio,  I finally asked him to teach me Ableton.  The next morning (May 16th 2012), We put that teaching into practice and collaborated on our first track. Him on drums, synths and me on chops. We knocked this track out in a matter of minutes, and exported the track.  He packed up his laptop and headed home and as soon as he left, I immediately uploaded the track to Soundcloud ( https://soundcloud.com/dutchmassive/ahwleexdutchy-meduhtayshun ) and history was made.  While I didn't know at the time,  this would become the first track created for "Chill Gawd, Chill".

For the following week I would make a few more beats in FL Studio (which ended up on my album "Blue Screen of Deaf) and I was getting frustrated with how long everything took compared to Ableton.  Ahwlee came back over on my birthday (May 23rd 2012) with the intention of installing Ableton onto my laptop.   I decided to close a chapter in my life and made my very beat in FL Studio titled "Just Be Yourself" (which was the first track from the album I minted on Catalog that @StvdioNoveau /  @snvault  just collected which unlocked the title track of "Chill Gawd, Chill" to be minted for a chance to unlock the album to DSP's) - https://beta.catalog.works/dutchyyy/-just-be-yourself-

To bring us back on track,  Ceremoniously closing the chapter and giving FL Studio a proper send off was like being reborn.  I immediately dove into Ableton Live and started cranking out music I loved at a rapid rate.  Going from FL Studio to Ableton was like taking ankle weights and chains off.   I was having so much fun, and I was able to execute ideas very very quickly.  Over the next 2 years, I made a lot of music, collabed with alot of my friends and every song was done in 15minutes to an hour max.  Fast forward to mid 2013, while living in a new apartment in Hawthorne, A ridiculous chain of events would happen that would create a new Arc for how I approached music.  Times were heavy, my heart was broken so the music became more intentional.   After a nasty breakup and nearly tossing my laptop out of the window, my friend Kaelin Ellis called me to calm me down and convinced me to take all that pain and anger and channel it into making music.  After we hung up,  I created "The Firelighter" which became the first track created for what was meant to be my next album "The Uproot". After that night,  There was a different energy attached to what I was creating.  Shortly after, I lost my job at Warner Brothers, got evicted from my apartment and was painfully ejected from Los Angeles.  After a short return back home to Tampa, FL I moved to Upstate NY and went through a little more pain before finally achieving peace on a secluded mountain where my spirit, outlook and sound would evolve.  (you can read more about that back story here - https://beta.catalog.works/dutchyyy/set-your-intentions )  The Reality is,  I had so much new music I was excited to release which became the albums "The Uproot" & "Traversal" which I wanted to release as a double album telling a full very intentional story. 
but I was sitting on so much unreleased music that I made while in Los Angeles and it felt weird releasing this super heavy double album while all this other unreleased music that represented a whole Arc of life where I was just having fun was still in limbo.  So I started sorting all of that music and decided to release the older music first on cassette.  I realized I had too many songs to fit on a 90 minute Tape,  So I decided to press a 120 minute Cassette.  At the last minute, I lost a few tracks due to corrupted  Ableton projects so I filled in the gaps by pulling 4 songs from "The Uproot" which I regret.  At the time, I was able to justify it in my mind because, everything else was so old and didn't really represent where I was currently at musically so I added "The Scramble" / "Evolution of a Shrug" / "Lamb's Bread" / & "OneForShoes" to fill out the cassette.  This choice would eventually come back to haunt me and become the catalyst of years of hoarding music due to releasing music out of order from when it was created which seems silly but Chronological documentation has always been something I value.    

To wrap this up where we first began in this story,  It was the day before I planned to release the album I titled "Chill Gawd, Chill"  An album I titled in response to everyone asking non stop when I would drop a new album. I've been burning "Nag Champa" incense ritualistically since the mid 90's.  Nearly every beat on that album was created with smoke drifting in the air,  I got all of my friends in Los Angeles hooked on burning Nag Champa and the album also represented a period in my life where I was super chill and didn't approach music with too much intent or heaviness so I had my friend DJ (PeaceOutPremiere) to Design the cover artwork and stickers,  and attached stickers to boxes of Nag Champa to mail out with the tapes but something was missing.  The album needed one final track, created with intent to convey the overall vibe of the album.  The entire album was full of sample chops,  but while I was on the mountain, I also started making music under the alias "Sonofziggy" which was no samples,  just one take, live recorded long form sessions of me blindly playing keys and instruments.  So for the final track,  I wanted to sample myself,  So I played some keys,  Then I chopped up my own recording like I would any other sample, laid some drums,  Played some more keys, bass and synths and Bounced out a song live in one take, and thus was born the title track to the 2 hour tape "Chill Gawd, Chill"

The next day, I quietly dropped the album on Bandcamp with pre-orders for the Cassette. It sold out immediately and was Bandcamp's best selling Cassette. Due to high demand and fomo, I was pressured into doing a second pressing of Cassette w/ Nag Champa which dropped on my birthday, May 23rd 2016. Once again, it sold out immediately and was Bandcamp's best selling cassette for 2 weeks in a row. Obviously, my most popular / successful instrumental album as Dutchyyy (fka Dutchy) the demand to upload this to streaming was unbearable. To this Day, "Chill Gawd, Chill" remains only available on bandcamp. In fall of 2020, I did one final pressing of the two hour tape w/ Nag Champa. It was the last time I will press "this version" of the cassette

Backstory:

Created: Early May 2012 in my San Pedro apartment overlooking the Port of Los Angles.   Not much of back story for this one.   Though I do vividly remember making these back to back "WHNTHENGHTCMS PART I" & "WHNTHENGHTCMS PART II".   I was home alone after a breakup,  Nag Champa burning,  watching the last bit of daylight fade away and decided to keep myself distracted by being productive.  I remember it so vividly because I distinctly remember trying to open old sessions in FL Studio  of tracks I made prior to the great hard drive crash  of Xmas 2011 and getting really depressed that the ones that did load up where missing all the drums and vsts.   I had only been in Los Angeles a few months at that point,  Most of that time was spent either working at Cedars-Sinai, couch surfing at a new friends house, or just busy being distracted and in love.  I only made like 2 or 3 beats while living at my friends house up the street. "THE RARARA!" is the only one of those tracks I ended up adding to "Blue Screen Of Deaf". 

So shortly after moving into this apartment with my ex I moved across the country for, and I mean like the first week,  we broke up (for the first time) and I didn't know what to do with myself honestly. Being alone during the day was one thing,  but this was my first night alone in that apartment and I was dreading it, So as soon as it got dark it was finally time to get my zen on and get lost in creation.  I kinda blacked out after that moment, which is  normal when i'm alone getting lost in the DAW even to this day.  It's like time stops. I pop out from working and the reality is time did not stop at all. Like a Portal =)   

I didn't know it at the time but these would be some of the last beats I would ever make in FL Studio.  Shortly after these were made, Ahwlee entered my life and introduced to me to the real love of my life, Ableton Live =)

I was hesitant to put these tracks on the album because they were created after the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.  I added these two songs,  ANGLWNGS, and THE RARARA! to the album literally at the very last moment before I uploaded it considering when I released the album, I had already been using Ableton for like 5 months and wanted to keep the FL Studio tracks separate.   The one exception to this was "Just Be Yourself" which I saved to use for something I was more proud of.

I guess there was A backstory to these tracks after all.   It's pretty amazing being able to transport back in time and re-live moments attached to creating art.  I got that pit in my stomach I haven't felt in nearly a decade re-living this memory though.

Backstory:
I'd like to start this off by going on record that anytime the Question who my favorite producer is, the answer has been RND1 for the last decade so with that out of the way lets time travel a bit.

I met @RND1 (pronounced Round One) in 2012 when I first moved to Los Angles & joined the beat collective "Astral Basement" founded by Vik (previously known as Viktorstone)

I had been following Astral Basement since before I moved to L.A. during the infamous Tumblr Era, so when Vik reached out and asked if I wanted to be involved I said yes without hesitation.   The age of beat collectives,  I was apart of so many during the soundcloud era (Astral Basement, Soulection, FlyByNight, Expansions Collective, Cosmic Compositions,  Collective Resonance, Rootnote collective , etc)   

It wasn't until July 19th 2013  I got to meet RND1 in person for the first time at the Astral Basement show for Beat Soup at PooBah Records (Rest in Peace Ras G)  in Pasadena.   I remember meeting RND1 for the 1st time and him being so shy and quiet in person,  I noticed he looked cold so I gave him my Jacket to wear (something he must of really appreciated because I forgot about this but it's something that stuck with him for years to follow as he always reminds me) It was crazy to me this producer that I basically fanned out over constantly was so humble and reserved and we just clicked instantly.   RND1,  like most amazing producers I know has the all too common "BEAT HOARDER" syndrome.  He does release music,  but I have countless folders upon folders of the greatest music I've ever heard dating as far back as 2012 and he's yet to release any of it haha.   We grew closer as friends after I moved away from Los Angeles and he was the first person I went to for beats when I was living in New York and entertaining the idea of recording another "Dutchmassive" album.   He sent me batch after batch and instead of writing to anything, a new series would be born.  "DailyRambles" (The Reluctant Clap)  A series where I would blindly load up batches of beats I haven't listened to yet on my portable Tascam DR-05 and attempt to Freestyle over whatever I hear (this was my way of gauging if a beat had potential to sit and write to) and while I didn't end up writing or recording another "Dutchmassive" album,  I recorded 6 years worth of freestyles (Dailyrambles) and that all started by RND1 sending batches of absolute heat.  

In 2015,  I moved from New York back to my home town of Tampa, FL which came with very different energy and challenges than I had living on a secluded mountain in NY or the overstimulating energy of Living in Los Angeles,  So I decided to finish an album I began while living in Los Angeles, continued in New York and now would close that Chapter back in the state I tried my hardest to escape.  It was really important that I had a collab with RND1 on this project, so he sent me batch of beats he recently started and I didn't even make it through the entire folder before asking him to send me the Ableton Session for this beat. Most of ground work had already been laid, but I was able to go in and Dutchify it up enough adding an intro, horns, layered chops, some drums and drop outs etc but this is the one collab where I can say,  I didn't do most of the heavy lifting.   Usually I just get a drum loop and then do everything from there with very few exceptions.   There's much more to the RND1 x Dutchyyy story,  but we will pick back up where we left off in future backstories for future uploads.  To Be Continued  =)

Backstory:
Created  October 2014 while living in Upstate New York on the Sam's Point Nature Preserve.  Originally created with the intent of being released on "The Uproot".  It was one of four songs I pulled last minute to include on "Chill Gawd, Chill" to showcase more current music since the Majority of Chill Gawd, Chill was created 2012-2013.

The theme & inspiration of the song was in line with most of music created for "The Uproot" which was rebelling against the current Meta and Trend of the time (which is still relevant) of switching up to making more short, upbeat, dance type music.   I have nothing  against short songs,  upbeat or dance music.  I make that type of music as well but the majority of people at the time were pivoting so hard from their originally identity,  that I couldn't tell who's music was who in a blind listening test and I was pretty vocal about it which didn't earn me any  "cool points" haha.   I missed hearing music that rewarded the patient ear with slow builds and subtle changes and told a story, so I decided to stop worrying about what anyone else was creating and be the change I wanted to see.  This was around the time I decided to Live & Let Live and just focus on creating what I wanted to express and tuned out all the noise. 

Deep Isolation + Heavy Introspection = "I don't care"  Do you, have fun,  I'll be over here evoking & evolving.  PeacePeaceGawd

Backstory:  3:19am, December 19, 2016, I received my 1st twitter DM from Mousey saying "Hey check yr gmail- sent you 2 songs of yours I recorded vocals for today." Mousey and I spoke prior in Gmail and ran in the same circles where she had Residency (Beat Cinema / Low End Theory, etc) So I was already familiar w/ and a fan of her work.  At the time, I was out of town on A contract, teaching  at the hospital but I listened on my break and sent her back a message on IG. Letting her know I loved what I heard and added my critiques on the mixing.  She recorded over two  beats that were already officially released on my album/cassette, so I didn't put too much thought into it.  A few months later in March 2017  I asked if she minded if I posted one of the songs on my Soundcloud on her birthday (which is the demo version of Adult and varies from the version on the official "Dutchess EP"

MsMMMcG did a lot of live performances so I told her that she can record vocals over any song of mine that inspires her.  Months passed and she said she wanted to record enough tracks for an EP. I said that's fine, as long as I can mix the vocals to my beats. She ended up choosing more beats from albums that have already been released, so I said I'm cool with the EP being a free promo thing because I personally didn't want to monetize tracks that I've already released and made money from. More time passed, she would send vocals as she recorded them but I was in the process of working on two new albums and a side project when I was home, and I was out of state traveling teaching at hospitals every other month, So admittedly, I was super busy and I procrastinated on mixing the tracks, until she lit a fire under me letting me know she wanted to shoot multiple videos for the songs.   Sent out a few different versions, more time passed, and I finally agreed to her releasing the EP on Bandcamp & Streaming.  She was insistent on splitting any profits 50/50 but I declined and told her not to worry about splits because I still felt weird about double monetizing my beats. (I know, I know... I'm not the most business savvy artist on the planet)
