2021 has been landmark for me - embracing web3, learning so much, building with new community and progressing towards dreams. This is my last drop for the year, acknowledging the journey so far, the sights, sounds and incredible destinations en route.

'Journeyman' is an instrumental head-nod excursion - chopping my own piano improvisations and reworking them, soundtracking the explorer walking the path, taking in subtle changes along the way, variations on a theme, before stumbling across whole new ideas, places and spaces that would never have been arrived to if not for undertaking the journey in the first place. The journey is neverending and it's so worth the trip.

While in Kaga, western Japan for an artist residency during Summer 2019, I visited Kakusenkei Gorge - where some of the Motherland Suite video footage was shot. Kodama Shade was inspired by this magical place. The kodama are folkloric Japanese tree spirits and as I walked through the gorge, there was a palpable presence of ancient otherworldly spirits.

Track 3 of the Motherland suite - a series of meditative tone poems exploring themes of belonging and identity through my Japanese ancestry and roots. 

Mizugaki is my mother’s family name and also the mythical name given to a circle of trees which would surround and protect the place where a deity lived. The mizguaki would evolve through eras to become the defensive wall surrounding a lord’s inner chambers, or a symbolic boundary protecting a sacred item in a temple. This composition is an illustration of the protective walls, eventually letting us see the sacred and divine that it’s been keeping safe from view.

Literally translated as “red dragonfly”, Akatombo is an old Japanese folk melody as ubiquitous throughout Japan as Happy Birthday is to the the west. My mother would sing me this folk song when I was little and it’s always been a special touchstone to her and my heritage. Reharmonized and reinterpreted and imbued with love for the matriachy.

Bushido is the way of the warrior. An ancient code, a set of tenets that the samurai would live and die by which include truth, honor, compassion, loyalty, respect, courage, self control and justice. Whether they were engaged in battle, politics or the artisanal crafts - poetry, tapestry and art - that would come to replace their fighting ways, the Bushido guided their thoughts and actions.

O-Edo Nihonbashi is an old Japanese folk melody that spoke of the bridge into Edo - old Tokyo - which merchants, geisha, warriors and the like would cross to get in and out of the city. It’s a melody that I’ve always loved and felt perfect to help tell part of this suite’s story colliding the worlds of ancient Japan with my love for all things hip hop.

O-Edo Nihonbashi

Track 7 of the Motherland suite - a series of meditative tone poems exploring themes of belonging and identity through my Japanese ancestry and roots. 

Natadera Temple in Kaga, Japan is the second location where much of the Motherland Suite footage was shot in Summer 2019. The temple was founded in 717 AD, set in the mountains with serene lakes, trees and temple buildings throughout. One of the most important features of Natadera are its caves set into cliffs. The mythology is that the caves are portals to the spirit world - where spirits would come and go, and are also deeply tied into motherhood, so considered auspicious places for expecting mothers to visit. This composition is inspired by this place and story.

The making of an offering has always been a key aspect of Japanese culture. Its religious connotation is easy to imagine, making offerings to gods at temples and shrines, but it goes far beyond this to the core of Japanese society’s inextricable unwritten rules of loyalty, gratitude, and moral debt - as present today as it was in ancient times. I’d add to that humility and grace, infused with the power that comes from offering with an open hand from a place of love.

Backstory:

Picture a man strong of heart, but nearly broken. Vulnerable but unwavering as he summons as much strength as he can to fight and not crumble under his own weight or the weight of his circumstances. To reclaim his peace. To reclaim his personal power.

In that process of alignment - in learning and unlearning, there is true freedom in unapologetically following the heart. It is a path that perhaps provides a shortcut to happiness and fulfillment, but is far from easy. Nonetheless, one never truly loses in loving, living their purpose or being themselves. This is difficult to see at times. Though, that’s where inner fortitude, faith and persistence come in.

Drawing from personal experience, this piece is a depiction of such a journey. While playing a show in Palmdale, California with a wonderful group “Dean Mucetti and the Rhythm Real” in April 2022, I was suddenly asked to perform solo in the middle of the set, since we were flying through it rather quickly.

Being where I was mentally, physically and spiritually at the time, I was pensive and felt exposed. Though, there was no time to think. I took a deep breath to connect to my heart space. This is what poured out from me.

from just after the fabulist era, this song came to us after fabulist extended was released, as we began thinking about what we wanted to explore sonically. at the time, this was the most uptempo song we'd ever written. as we moved into what eventually became komorebi, meltaonin fell outside of the komorebi's overarching concepts of reflection and morality, and therefore wasn't included.

it remained always top of mind when we thought about where our music could go, with the sonics and lyrical imagery informing much of the music that was written later for komorebi. overall, it remains one of our favorite songs for its easy, energetic feeling combined with the songs overall dynamic shifts.

This is the first track off of my first LP "Hyperion" from 2020. The premise of the record was to sculpt a collection of songs where I focused on using vocal chops as both a lead and rhythmic element. In order to keep some sonic continuity throughout the record, every synth on here is from a single device using dozens and dozens of customized patches I made.

This song is loaded with laser sounds, collaged vocal chops, jumpy basslines, and shakers I sculpted out of little salt packets. So much of this song is about making due with what you have. I had this one synth I really liked, a bunch of royalty free vocal samples, and a field recorder to make percs with stuff around my house. I loved the idea of seeing just how much stuff I could make with such a limited number of resources. You don't always need tons of equipment and plugins and such to make lots of music, sometimes maximizing what you already have yields the best results. Ideas are ubiquitous - you can find them anywhere at any time.

There's a very limited amount of vinyl remaining for this album, and they include a folded 24" x 24" poster of the cover art. I will be sending a signed copy to the buyer of this song. Please contact me on twitter @cumulus_frisbee so I can get your contact info.

This song was the last song I made as part of a 7 Day EP Challenge. Everyday for an entire week I challenged myself to make a track and put it out the next day regardless of the outcome. What makes this song so special and stand out from the rest is that it's dedicated and inspired by the life of my Grandma, Jane Rothe. She inspired me to become a musician at a young age, and even in her passing she continues to inspire and push me to be a better producer.

Silence Of The Dawn

The title "Inner Inference" refers to having personal insight into some aspect of your life after careful examination. In a way it is supporting the famous statement that "an unexamined life is not worth living." I was peeling back the layers and revealing alot of ways I was not accepting myself, my reality, or how I felt in general. Often examining our life after spending so much time distracted by our day-to-day can be a lot to take in. 

What I found afterwards was a sort of clarity that I never would have felt if I had continued to be afraid of examining what I was feeling. I didn't quite do this on purpose (though I can see it in hindsight) - but the first half of the song is the process of peeling back those layers, examining those intricate feelings. Then it breaks down into stillness, a sobering slowness, only to build back up into a more liberating sound built off of the progress fostered by that self examination. And the very end hints at the possibility that there is something totally new, fresh, and vaguely promising laying ahead after completing this process. 

It's always made far more sense to me to put these feelings and experiences into music and art rather than strictly talking about them, because I can only tell you so much about what went into making something. There is always endless subtext that I can't put into words. And I always feel enriched to tell a story this way, where you also could've justly interpreted this song in an entirely different manner. I love that possibility and encourage people to decipher their own meaning from anything I make. This is just what was happening when I made it.

I also designed the cover art, as I do for all of my releases.
