Barrio Fiesta is a sonic exploration of "Tropical Futurism" inspired by "Afrofuturism," an aesthetic and a philosophy which puts island sounds and culture front and center through imagined futures.

Backstory:

One night, while scrolling through tumblr, alone in my Los Angeles apartment, on a random impulse I ended up sending a message to Vik (fka Viktor Stone / Vktrstn) who was the founder of  the infamous #AstralBasement Collective (one of the 1st "Lofi-HipHop" Collectives.   We knew of each other but hadn't spoken up to this point.  If I remember correctly, I think my message just said "Send me some drums to lay Chops Over" and gave him my email.    

A few hours later [Mon, Mar 25, 2013, 12:56 AM] I got an email titled "$$$$$$$$" with no words, just a file attached named "Drums4dutchy.wav".  About a week passed, between spending time with my GF and working I didn't have a chance to load the drums up, I honestly Didn't see the email until a week later when I reminded him not to forget to send me drums and he told me he already sent them a few hours after I originally asked for them.  I loaded them into Ableton as soon as I got home from work around 9:30pm, and uploaded my quick flip to soundcloud a few hours later just before the stroke of midnight.

and began working on 2.0...     but all good things must come to end.  And like most collectives that existed during that Golden Era of Soundcloud, everyone went their separate ways for the usual reasons most crews, groups and collectives do.  

I still have all the unreleased songs from 2.0 on an old hard drive and it still holds up to this day.


Fast Forward, to winter 2014 while in the attic of the house I was living in at Sam's Point Nature Preserve in New York.  While brainstorming and organizing my next official release "Chill Gawd, Chill" (The 120 minute Cassette) I decided to revisit that Session to remove the intro and extend the beat with some slight change ups.

A few months Later, The 2 Hour Tape was released

and thus "Untitled in April" was born.

“I wrote this record because I felt like my friends and I were always staring at our phones when we were together. I wanted to talk about how that digital tether was cheating us of real connection. When I released it in May 2020 we were in the pandemic where we couldn’t  have that physical connection so we were relying on the digital world. No as I’m moving through web3 I’m seeing the blessing that a lot of these technological advances can be. I also want this song to remind us to still pay attention to those IRL connections and listen to our minds and bodies when we start to feel stuck.

I wrote this song with a broken heart. At the time, my relationships with others and the relationship I had with myself was failing. I needed to readjust the way I saw myself as well as the standards & boundaries I upheld for the people in my life. 

On my journey of inner alchemy, I spent a good amount of time at this river in Tobago that you see in the cover art. I would meditate, sing, think, write, connect with nature, and other forms of shadow work.

The HeartCycles logo, which can be seen three times in the cover art represents transformation of the heart. Life & love can bring us difficult times, but that energy can always be transmuted to spring forth a new, more uplifting vibration if we look within. When we connect with our hearts in deeper ways, a new kind of magic is unlocked within us.

Writing this song in 2018 was a pillar in both my professional and personal life. This song gave me the feeling like I had finally dug a space for myself. 

In 2014, I moved to Nashville, tn to leave my small town in Massachusetts and pursue music full time. Coming to Music City was both overwhelming and wonderful. I was excited to play in the “big leagues” but was also young and unsure of who I was and of what I wanted to be, which brought some ugly years. 

By the time November of 2018 rolled around, I felt tired of the music industry and like I’d been chewed up and spit out multiple times already, the way you feel after terrible publishing meetings, bars where people view you as background noise, and where having blonde hair and a Martin guitar meant I wanted to be Taylor Swift. I wrote ‘Coast of Maine’ in a moment where all I wanted to be was back home at my summer house where I felt peace, where I felt grounded, where I knew myself and could trust the love around me. 

Coast of Maine is the song I sing a cappella to open my shows, its the only song of mine I still go back and listen to when I need it, and it’s the moment I remember feeling a shift from being a person with a guitar to feeling like an artist with uniqueness and stories to tell. 

This song holds such a special place in my heart,

From the moment Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque met in 1907 during a studio visit, the two became fast friends. Over the next 7 years they experimented with new painting techniques, resulting in the formation of the Cubist movement. Braque is quoted as saying, “We were like mountain-climbers roped together.” They worked closely together to push the other's boundaries and create a bold new artistic vision. 

B-Dos and I met on Discord in 2018 and quickly fell into chatting everyday, sharing demo ideas, tampering with Ableton, and making memes. A digital Braque meets Picasso. 

B-Dos's sound design is a force to reckon with. I remember the first time I heard his song 'Goodbye' it felt like my mind was a scratched CD skipping around inside the Walkman of my consciousness. He does unspeakable things to synthesizers with every release, each time helping take electronic music to terrifying new heights. 

For 'Frontier' we worked together to make a genre-bender, equal parts music and exploration. I don't think I could re-make half of the sounds in this song again if I spent the rest of my life on it. This release landed us on Spotify's 'Creamy' playlist alongside other electronic music experimenters. 

This is the fifth song on my album Last Chance At Life. Each song is part of a larger story in which three friends leave a ravaged Earth behind in search of a new planet.

In November of 2013 I released "Loki" on my Soundcloud, and I haven't been able to beat its impact with any other release of mine to date. "Loki" has since garnered millions of streams across all streaming platforms, and has frankly been a huge reason for any kind of success I've had over the years. I owe this song a lot, and it's arguably the song most special to me from my catalog of music. (And I almost didn't release it because of personal issues related to the song--a whole 'nother wild story)

A Note From Aly:

I made Pocketwatcher when I was still delivering food to pay rent and I was reflecting on that particular moment in my life. If I’m not mistaken I was late to drop off somebody’s breakfast because I was finishing up the second verse. Listening to this song takes me back every time. It's about balancing patience with the process and working to stay optimistic with all the discouragement that pursuing a non-traditional path entails.

The process for this song was fun, it started with me making a beat in the airport. First I laid down the basic drum groove and then (my favorite part) was me chopping up and re-pitching my friend Charlie’s bassline to make the current one. I changed all the notes and moved them around a bunch to make an entirely new melody. I recorded the whole song to just drums and bass, and then took it back to Ben and Charlie and added the guitars and synths to finish it off.

Hello Stranger

hi guys !! i’m sophia alexa, and ‘kids’ is my second ever release as an artist. i wrote this song about a friendship from my childhood that started to get sour because of distance and us changing throughout the years. i was looking at old photos, and I started to relive our friendship and how easy it was. it brought up old memories like listening to my favourite Bob Dylan songs and spending our summers together. although nostalgia can feel sad, it can also remind you of the good times. this song is wishing everything could return to normal and knowing deep down that change is inevitable. i hope you can relate to it and enjoy it!

since I pressed my first record on Catalog, which was my genesis NFT, i’ve tried to soak up as much information as possible about the web 3.0 space by tuning into podcasts, taking part in twitter spaces and becoming active in several discord servers. compared to most social media platforms, everyone is so supportive of each other! Suddenly I see myself reflected in the glass of my phone, I see what I'm doing. I'm ranting again, it looks like.
But it feels right to vent about this weird and fucked up world. It feels right to let these thoughts and theories out, to test them against others. My DoomTimelineTM rants are spontaneous bursts of energy that find their way out, potentially leading to a meaningful conversation with others, potentially hitting a deaf and blind wall. But if I don't share these insights, I get stuck.

But besides ranting on twitter about politics, climate change, human psychology, music industry, and other stuff that bugs me, what I really do in life is obviously this: I make music. But working on club music was really weird for a while during restrictions. It felt weird to make music that I couldn't experience in the setting I designed it for. But since then, I've been going to clubs again. I've been going out to hear others, and going out to play myself. It makes so much more sense for me to be making club music again now. So what better time for distorted 808s and breakbeats than right now?

This song was one of those instances where I had the idea for the skeleton of the song for so long, and just hadn't sat down to properly try recording it. I'd been playing so many of the chord voicings when I wasn't recording, just practicing, just feeling out how some of them fit together - or didn't fit as well. I'd spent months figuring out some of those voicings in an alternate tuning on guitar, because it sounded and felt better than playing in standard tuning at the time. I could reach different combinations of notes that I couldn't in a regular tuning. Certain notes were closer together, or further apart, and it changes your playing in ways you can't be certain of until you spend some time experimenting with it. 

So many of those things wouldn't have been properly jotted down if I'd let them remain as nebulous ideas that I only played with while practicing. It's so easy to be like "Ahhhh is this good? Does this suck? Should I record this?" when really - sitting down and recording anything is better than not. Even if it sucks, you wouldn't have spent hours thinking in your head how cool it will be - only to be disappointed when you realize it doesn't work the same way it did in your head. And sometimes something you think isn't special ends up growing into something beyond what you could imagine. It just seems important to stay open, and record everything you can within reason. You never know what might work.

I also designed the cover art, as I do for all of my releases.

Tabú marks the first official release from INFINITE and my first Music NFT of 2022.

This is the 1/1 of the song. On Mirror I launched editions as a visual & musical art piece.

story:
Tabu is a latin future funk inspired by some of my favorites, like Daft Punk and The Weeknd. Music NFTs spark my creativity and remove the hesitance whenever I have new music to bring to the world. 

My songwriting/recording process is very spontaneous, Tabú was pure energy, I recorded the song in less than two hours and sent it out to produce the very next day. My producer Daniel (Shine) in Argentina knows what I am capable of and has been pushing me to explore other genres to elevate my sound and Tabú is the result of one of many styles we are exploring to drop as a part of Infinite.
