Penned post-breakup with love! Feels like New York City in the springtime, where I initially recorded the vocal takes. Was extremely broke and broken up but the process of writing this was therapeutic at the time and still is looking back.

VELVET GIRLS

From my Debut EP as LUCA LUSH Cherry Blossom. First record I felt comfortable enough singing on. It weaves its way through future bass and future house, emblematic of the era and my production leanings at the time while still residing in a shoebox apartment in new york city. Maximalist melodic music made for the dance floor.

I CAN TELL

Wrote the majority of this record on the kitchen counter in my managers studio apartment circa 2017, with the intent of making something aggressive and moshpit worthy while still maintaining a melodic anchor in the childlike utilization of marimbas / music boxes, particularly in the latter half of the track. Daniel Ricardo was seen jamming out to the track at the time of its release on IG live and clips of that moment have been circulating ever since.

Notes from the Original Release:

"Started this tune awhile ago during my first tour in Australia. I showed a demo to Enschway when we were kickin it in sydney and ill be honest it was not up to snuff at the time, so it languished on a hard drive for an uncharacteristically long time (usually start and finish tunes within a 72 hour window). Fast forward to the second time I was out there, while dealing with a once promising relationship fall apart gave me the impetus to come back and wrap it up when the lyrical content was resonating with me the fullest. Pretty happy how it turned out. If u came for a straight banger and not a song don't trip I got plenty of those in store for y'all but making music is how I stay sane and its cathartic as hell to let those feelings out in a way that a straight club tune can't quite convey. Anyway hope u enjoy love u guys"

A BOY BRUSHED BLUE LIVING IN BLACK AND WHITE

From the original release track notes: 

/ I was on my porch at night when I saw this decrepit sad looking black cat outside on the street. This cat was rail thin, missing fur everywhere, clipped ear - essentially looked like he/or she had seen better days. So me being the altruistic animal expert I am, I heated up some fish and left it out on the street (cause cats like fish right?). Every day that week this cat would come up to the front porch and meow for food, and every day I'd feed her, to the point where she would actively try to slide in the door on my way back in.

So eventually I caved - even tho I had never had a pet before and didn't know the first thing about cats - and took her over to the vet to get checked out. And suprisingly, she was fine, if somewhat malnourished, vet basically said "there's no chip either so...this is your cat now".

And at first she was ugly, and kinda smelly, and sometimes she still wakes me up by purring in my face until she gets breakfast, but I love her. Her fur grew back in over the course of a few months and now shes a beautiful feline who still enjoys playing more with a nickel or hair tie more than any toy I buy her.

Anyway, I wanted to write a song from the perspective of Sasha during that time when she came into my life - and I hope the emotional arch of the track reflects those feelings. /

Sasha sadly passed away earlier this year. Had a great 6 1/2 years together, id like to think gave her a better life than the one she was living when I found her. I loved her more than anything.

SASHA

One of my favorite records, emblematic of peak SoundCloud era. Was originally demo'd in early 2016 while living in a producer trap house in East Hollywood, forgotten for a year, before finding its way back into live sets while on a brief tour in Australia + New Zealand. When I returned back to Los Angeles I recorded the vocals myself and began shopping the record around. Was almost slated for release via Mad Decent before falling through and seeing an independent release in spring of 2017.

Wrote this song around March 2020 right after the pandemic kicked off. Was living in downtown LA at the time & skid row quickly expanded to encompass my immediate neighborhood, things were looking bleak. Writing music was the only thing keeping me sane then and this song accurately encapsulates the listless anxious energy of that moment in time. Thanks for listening~
