A Note From Aly:

I made Pocketwatcher when I was still delivering food to pay rent and I was reflecting on that particular moment in my life. If I’m not mistaken I was late to drop off somebody’s breakfast because I was finishing up the second verse. Listening to this song takes me back every time. It's about balancing patience with the process and working to stay optimistic with all the discouragement that pursuing a non-traditional path entails.

The process for this song was fun, it started with me making a beat in the airport. First I laid down the basic drum groove and then (my favorite part) was me chopping up and re-pitching my friend Charlie’s bassline to make the current one. I changed all the notes and moved them around a bunch to make an entirely new melody. I recorded the whole song to just drums and bass, and then took it back to Ben and Charlie and added the guitars and synths to finish it off.

A Note From Aly:
This song is a love letter to my girlfriend of 5 years, though we’d been together for less than a year when I wrote it. 

I remember recording Maryam’s verse in my undecorated apartment, my roommates clamoring in the kitchen a room over. I had saved up three years of streaming royalties to buy a used mic and audio interface and was still learning how to use them properly. Looking back, this song represents a turning point in my journey as a self-sufficient artist and creative.

Love’s Like Drumming is important to me for a number of reasons. The first and most superficial is that it’s my first song to hit a million streams — minting it is a way to celebrate that milestone. More importantly, it was one of the first songs that I fully produced, mixed, and mastered myself.

A Note From Aly:
Trip is essentially a journal entry that documents a pivotal year of my life, during which I decided to put my professional life on hold and pursue music full-time for a year. It follows my thought process through making that decision, and the realities that the choice came with. Coming from a South Asian household, doing music full time has never been an acceptable career path for me, so the day I decided that I would be taking a year to spend on music I was internally torn. Part of me felt disappointed that I would be letting my family down through this decision. Another part of me felt called to do so and was totally convinced of the necessity of the decision. During that year, I went through my highest highs and lowest lows. Some days were incredible, and once I even got an incredibly supportive and affirming phone call from one of my musical idols at 1:30 AM. Other days were not, and I’ve spent my fair share of days in the fetal position after particularly tough conversations with family members. I also was driving Postmates delivery 6-11 hours a day, 6 days a week over the course of the year. Those experiences strengthened my resolve to ship my music even more.

one too many hours spent by the lake.

this song was written and partially recorded when I was 14 years old, in the living room of my childhood house. 

i recorded it through my first laptop’s microphone with garageband. if you listen closely, you can hear my mom doing dishes in the background.

Tortuga stayed on my hard drive for over a decade, and was thankfully uncovered years later. it's a snapshot of my early days writing music, a glimpse of where my path started.

~of course~ I will have my genesis piece be the closer from the 'all this leaving' EP

Every song on ‘all this leaving’ was written in and plotted the depths of the worst period of depression and realignment in my life. Each song was a milestone and a marker on the spectrum of different feelings and ways I was coping. The idea that this EP mapped my descent and ascent out of a period of depression seems so obvious now but while it was being made I was drowning too deep to recognize it.  Each song was a message in a bottle sent to my later self. Maybe they were calls for help. Maybe it was just pure catharsis. But now I’m on the beach picking them up and uncorking what they truly represent.

coming home is different than the rest of the songs on the ep though. It's the opposite of leaving. Bob Dylan always described songwriting as “finding his way back home”.  This song is me finding my way home and grounding myself through the music itself.
