It’s been 2 years since this project has been released (11/22/2019) but I didn’t get a proper chance to fully push it out (RIP pandemic) - this new paradigm and wave of music NFTs seems like the perfect opportunity to push this project out again.

With Catalog being at the forefront of 1/1 canonical music NFTs and my involvement as one of the founding core engineers, it makes sense to post on Catalog as this is what I am capable of doing entirely myself as an auteur of music.

I’ve played, composed, recorded, wrote, produced, mixed and mastered music my whole life and this is the first project that I’ve been satisfied enough with to call my magnum opus.

This was the first full project I've released as Hvdson being a masked alias back in 2019 - the genesis project. I've always had a vision of making Hvdson this artist that everyone could feel like they were a part of so I tried my best to keep Hvdson a blank slate and make the narrative of a simulation of the persona/ego as inspired by the psychology of Carl Jung's id, ego and super-ego.

I guess the closest thing to what i'm thinking of is what Brud is doing with (Lil) Miquela and the already well known digital persona of Hatsune Miku, but a decentralized and white-labeled version of that in which people own a part of Hvdson and can use it as a composable base layer to build other projects on top of - a decentralized musical persona simulation.

The vision is to have Hvdson perform at a stadium full of people - all of which have either been contributors of the project or own some portion of it.

Why this is one is different:
Whoever owns this NFT while owning the NFT this has my permission to drop their version as an nft with them singing/rapping/doing whatever they feel on it, as long as I'm given my proper 50% as producer (which we can do through Catalog or Reveel). Meaning as this passes from owner to owner, we could see many different versions. Just to clarify that doesn't give rights beyond dropping as a music nft (i.e. - not on streaming platforms, feel free to dm me if you want to know the ethos behind that though), BUT I do think this could be a really cool new way to collab and do records with artists. Track 2 of the Motherland suite - a series of meditative tone poems exploring themes of belonging and identity through my Japanese ancestry and roots. 

While in Kaga, western Japan for an artist residency during Summer 2019, I visited Kakusenkei Gorge - where some of the Motherland Suite video footage was shot. Kodama Shade was inspired by this magical place. The kodama are folkloric Japanese tree spirits and as I walked through the gorge, there was a palpable presence of ancient otherworldly spirits.

Relics is the second track from my album Ex Voto - a collection of nine pieces for solo piano, violin, and cello. The title “ex voto” comes from the Latin ex voto suscepto — "from the vow made."  It is an offering given in gratitude for a prayer answered or a wish granted. The music of Ex Voto is more personal and exposed than anything else that I have written. 

Relics is the first piece that I composed for Ex Voto. The melody had been in my head for a while and I was waiting for the right project to develop it. I wanted Relics to sound familiar and to evoke memories of the past.

at the very core, i’m just a girl from the ghetto that decided to keep growing. i come from poverty and hand-me-downs. i witnessed gang violence from my bedroom window. i grew up back and forth between  inglewood and the jungles of LA (where they shot “training day”). but even with the hand i was dealt, somehow i always knew that there was more waiting for me outside of the bubble i was in. 

my mom owned a business growing up, and although we struggled, she was and continues to be my inspiration to aspire for more. so i went to college, graduated, moved around, and kept pushing towards my dream of being an artist that the world would soon resonate with. 

as i continue to push towards that dream, i realize that what matters more than success is progress. the choice to continue. the falling and restabilizing. the climb. that’s where excellence really lives. that’s the part of the story that really matters.

this is my first rap on the blockchain! my genesis rap record! so many more to come, but i believe this is a great introduction to my lyrical ability. produced by kaelin ellis with artwork by stonez the organic. i’m so grateful to have their hands on this piece.

This song is inspired by one of my favorite seasons..Spring. That's usually a time when the grass begins to green & weather starts to warm up. The overall mood changes and flowers that were once fragile tulips begin to grow and blossom. All flowers and plants require a bit of rain to do so, and without the showers they don't grow. I take that as a metaphor for life. We have to embrace the rain, and transitions as we all embark to become the flowers that we're meant to be. It's all apart of the process.

“Fold Proof” is about overcoming adversity and being triumphant even when all else fails. The photograph used in the cover art was from NFT NYC in November 2021 and was the night I got word that my uncle had passed the night prior & was buried the day of my performance.

Already having gone thru a lot of adversity (in life in general & leading up to that point), my experience at NFT NYC was filled with love & support from my new found community. It was all surreal and kept me in a positive headspace the entire trip. As I celebrate one year in Web3, I wanted to make this release special and take it back to when my community became family. Wouldn’t be here without the folks who believed in me, made me feel heard + seen, and really embraced me.

I want to dedicate this record to my late uncle but also hope this record resonates with folks everywhere who know that giving up is never the option (even when it feels like the easiest thing to do). I'm here to motivate, uplift, and inspire my community in the hopes that we can all help the next person out.

Okay I wrote this song like 3 years ago when I was living in downtown la locked in my room in a loft just making music all the time. I made like 300 songs that year and some of them are still my best work to this day. So a lot of them turned into nothing some turned into releases but like a year after that I was living in a tiny apartment in silverlake and the a/c was leaking taking a toll on both the hardwood floors and our security deposit. So billy came over and it was a hot summer day with no a/c and we made a bunch of stuff but at the end I played him this demo and he was like “ that’s perfect, I have an idea.” I gave him the files and he came back like a week later with what is now ‘different world.’ I love that song so much and I always felt like sharing the original demo would be a powerful way to add some more context. I am excited about this as an opportunity to share a little more of what inspired the song and the story behind it and giving someone the opportunity to own a little piece of the creative process.
