Grady

Creases was the first song I wrote living in Beachwood Canyon, a place that led to some of my favorite music and good times I've been blessed with so far. 

I had just bought a moped, fostered a Frenchie, and didn't have my studio set up. So I propped a pair of monitors on our coffee table in the middle of a party, and recorded the vocals while people danced around to the demo. 

I hope this song makes you feel as free as I did when I made it, and puts some creases on your pretty face.

Grady - Creases

If she doesn't pass the mom vibe check it'll never work, so I always get it out of the way as early as possible. Pretty much as soon as I catch a vibe with someone I always try to introduce them to my mom. Koala came out of a time I was on mushrooms and felt like I really needed someone to hold, and in my state she became my eucalyptus tree, and I her koala. I was living in the valley, in an apartment with my friends Emma and Cole and feeling pretty damn free, and I wrote and made the whole song in my two twin beds that were pushed together to form one large faux king bed. My buddy Andrew Luce who mixed the song lived in an apartment in Hollywood, and I'd go over there to polish it and hang. When it was pretty much ready to be pressed to vinyl I made the weird little outro on his couch and threw it on the track. 

Koala was my favorite song I'd put out when I released it, and I took my mom on vacation to Kauai to celebrate its release at the beginning of 2020. I'm stoked to be putting it up into the ether world.

Grady - Koala

This was just an ecstasy explosion. I had met a girl that made fireworks go off in my head and the song shot out of me like a roman candle. I ended up going out into the desert to film the music video with a bunch of fireworks to get them out of my head and almost blew my legs off. But these are the risks we take for art. At the time I was living with Sam at The Crescent, and I made this in the shade of our living room while eating a protein bar. Those were some weird times. 

This is the second drop in my "relics" series, the collection of songs I put out over the first three years of my solo project.

Grady - 500 Days of Summer

In 2017,  I was freshly out of being in a band and deciding where to start as a solo artist. I was working with a lot of producers to figure that out and had been making a lot of my favorite stuff with Melvv. One day while standing in the sunlight of his living room in Beverly Hills, he played me the warmest synth I'd ever heard in my entire life and ten minutes later Garden was pretty much done. 

A few months later it was time to decide which song to step out into the world with and everything in my heart told me Garden was that. Lyrically and energetically it just felt right. 

This is the first drop in my "relics" series, the collection of songs I put out over the first three years of my solo project.

This project was made over the course of 14 hours two years ago and it changed my life forever. It was fall and I was in Malibu making Whethan's album Fantasy with a few of my closest friends. We didn't really see anyone else for a few weeks, some days we'd work on the songs together, others we'd all contribute separately and intermittently check in on each other's progress. Every day was pretty much exclusively filled up with Fantasy, but towards the end of the retreat we had gotten a general layout of the album and decided to take a 24 hour break to reset and check back in the following day with fresh ears.

In the morning, I decided to take some mushrooms and meditate. The house was this Mediterranean palace placed right on the edge of a mountain, overlooking the ocean with a sprawling backyard. I sat myself in the grass and closed my eyes, just as the shrooms started hitting. I got a little anxious about thirty minutes in, but this voice in my head started softly repeating "surrender to the moment, stop trying to control it" and when i listened, it brought me a peace that had a melody attached to it. Ten minutes later I'd written deep breath in the sun, and that little mantra repeating in my head can be heard in the outro of it. 

i got really emotional after laying deep breath down. i couldn't stop crying thinking about my mom, and how i probably would never know how it felt to be a mother looking at their child. images of me as a baby in a sea of sheets, her gentle voice lulling me to sleep were clear in my head, it all felt so profound. i heard in my head what i thought it must have felt like to be her, tender and fragile but also unshakable and unequivocally deep. i ran inside with tears still in my eyes, sat at the grand piano, and recorded what became do you know how much i love you. to this day i regard it as the most powerful piece of music i've ever made.

At sunset, we drove down to the beach and i hopped in the water as the sun went down. The image used for this piece was a super8 frame from that moment. Everything was so beautiful. I was with some of my best friends of my entire life, swimming in southern california, and had just made two of my favorite songs ever. We went back up to the house and in the glow of twilight i hopped on a trampoline at a property across the street with my friend Tak taking photos on his Contax. That's where the album cover art came from. 

An hour later the sun had gone down and I was sitting on the floor of wheaty's room playing guitar. I was still pretty high when a full blood moon started rising up out of the ocean, running a glowing red streak across its surface. I felt so connected to the universe at that moment I swore I could hear it talking to me, and I went outside with a couple of buddies and started just howling. I went back inside, picked up the guitar, and tracked the first half of can you hear the moon sat down on the floor. I met everyone downstairs for dinner, talked a while and went back upstairs and finished it.

After we'd left Malibu I realized just how much those songs meant to me, and how much sense they made together. So I made them flow nicely into one another, polished them up individually, and turned it over to the world as The In Between.

I hope that this body of work has or does resonate with you as much as it has for me.

The In Between

I started writing "The Love Umbrella" over a year ago while I was head over heels for a really awesome person. I made 40+ songs before narrowing it down to what became my debut album released on October 15th.

I don't want those that got cut to collect dust - they are some of my favorite songs I've ever made.

"Parasol" is a collection of unreleased records I wrote for the album that didn't fit in the final sequencing. Think of it like parts of an extended film.

That's My Girl! is the third drop in this series and one of the last that I wrote, and as warm and lovely as the song is I actually wrote it retrospectively at a time when she very much was not my girl. But the feeling was so easy to tap back into that I ended up writing a lot of the album during that time.

parasol - That's My Girl!

I fell in love with a girl on September 8th, 2020. She was sitting in my patio during a party, smoking a cigarette with the kind of self assuredness that you can't help but admire. It happened immediately for me, but as we started spending more and more time together (largely in part to my giddy persistence), I noticed that the feeling was mutual. But it was more than just the adoration. She knew me better than anyone within five minutes of meeting me. It was in a lot of ways what some people look for their entire lives, but my heart was unsettled and I wasn't ready to give myself entirely to her. I took her love for granted and ultimately lost the privilege of having it.

Over the next 365 days I would learn just how rare what we had was, and process and channel that experience in the most natural way I knew how: music. Even months after she had  gone, it was still effortless for me to tap back into how absolutely fucking magical it felt to be loved by her. The songs came from the purest place within myself, and after a while started taking shape into what would become my debut album, The Love Umbrella. 

One year later to the day I made my final edit and pressed the record. This is that final draft, from start to finish, all in one place. The album was never meant to be separate songs but instead a cohesive narrative that blended seamlessly from one to the next. It was meant to feel like a movie, more specifically one with a happy ending. I gave so much of myself to this project and to date it is easily my proudest contribution to the airwaves. I learned more about myself in the process of making it than from probably anything else ever, and am definitely a different (in a good way) person because of it and her. It goes without saying that this is my most personal release to date, which is why I wanted to share it in this format.
