FINKEL

"White Elephant" was written by FINKEL on Mackinac Island, Michigan in January 2021 while writing their album "Islanders". The duo visited one of the woodland-hideouts that Jane and her friends frequented as teens, coined "White Elephant". White Elephant is a fallen, uprooted tree, deep in the Mackinac woods and acted as a secret hang out spot. Its roots (pictured in the album art) run much deeper than what is exposed. Similar to the kind of friendships that start at a young age, the roots are never truly separated from the soil. Everyone always comes back. 

The duo wrote the song to capture the feeling of revisiting the familiar wooded landscape of their youth, with the same friends who have been enjoying it for decades. FINKEL wanted to further articulate this connective tissue by bringing in Michigan-native, Illa J, to talk about his spot when he was growing up in Detroit. FINKEL have been fans of Illa J's for years, so getting to tell this story with his help was an incredible full-circle moment.

SomeDays // I Thought I Knew (Album - 2019)

SomeDays is a song off of my 2019 release, “I Thought I Knew”. My objective for that album was to metaphorically introduce you to the rabbit whole of my mind, go down the rabbit hole and before things got too dark, break you back up see the light at the end of the tunnel. 

This was one of the “on the way down” tracks. The whole album was a cathartic release for me but this song in particular was one of the easier records to write. 

It’s an expression of SomeDays social distancing (before the Pandemic).  I had been through some hurt in the past via some friendships where people had ghosted me or didn’t want to be accountable for their wrong actions. Being laid off from several jobs throughout the years — not fire but laid off (smh). And even being used by people in the music industry early on in my career. 

Those past experiences made cold and sometimes I would close myself off to the world…and be a hermit. Just because I didn’t want to deal with people. And this song is an expression of that. However, I do think even in the healing space I’m in now — there are just SomeDays I want to be by myself and that’s okay.

About 'just stay':
just stay is one of the fastest songs I've ever produced & written. It's a direct response to the 2020 lockdown. Its genesis came from both an emotional & practical place. My fiance and I for the first time in a while had an opportunity to spend even more time together 7 days a week as the world shut down. It gave us time we needed to bloom into the next phase of our relationship together. "just stay" is very literally inspired by that notion of us "staying in" but also the sentiment of passion & romance in the purest/rawest form. 

From a practical POV: As an indie artist, the world was shutting down, concert dates I had planned for the fall of 2020 were now in question and studio work was inevitably slowing down. I did probably what any artist would think to do: write my way out of any situation. Just stay was born from the emotion I was feeling and the necessity to hopefully soundtrack feelings of the pandemic with a song that could secure stability in my career at that time. Fortunately the song went on to become successful on streaming platforms, and was essentially the quickest I've ever written and released a song. I wrote, recorded, produced, mixed and distributed the song within about a week or two. 

Just stay also marked my return to mixing my own music, and was an affirming experience exploring that space again as an artist from start to finish. It was also a turning point for me as a mix engineer. I mixed my first album, Portrait in Two (2017) and had largely been doing rough mixes on my work until 2020. I've always mixed, but just stay brought me back on the forefront of the final presentation of my music in a creative way that I had missed. Engineering is something I'm passionate about and spend time studying and learning.

Why release on Catalog:
This song has always been an important part of my catalog; my journey as a songwriter writing catchy songs with pop sensibilities, while remaining in my own creative lane. just stay is one of the first songs I wanted to mint, and now it's one of the last songs in my "legacy" collection, before I released brand new music on Catalog. I hope you enjoy it.

If she doesn't pass the mom vibe check it'll never work, so I always get it out of the way as early as possible. Pretty much as soon as I catch a vibe with someone I always try to introduce them to my mom. Koala came out of a time I was on mushrooms and felt like I really needed someone to hold, and in my state she became my eucalyptus tree, and I her koala. I was living in the valley, in an apartment with my friends Emma and Cole and feeling pretty damn free, and I wrote and made the whole song in my two twin beds that were pushed together to form one large faux king bed. My buddy Andrew Luce who mixed the song lived in an apartment in Hollywood, and I'd go over there to polish it and hang. When it was pretty much ready to be pressed to vinyl I made the weird little outro on his couch and threw it on the track. 

Koala was my favorite song I'd put out when I released it, and I took my mom on vacation to Kauai to celebrate its release at the beginning of 2020. I'm stoked to be putting it up into the ether world.
