Backstory:

We made the beat in summer of 2003 at Jeremy's Apartment (Tampa Bay) on his Mpc2000XL.  After he finished making the beat, I wanted to see if I could flip the sample differently,  per usual..  my signature sleepy sound ended up being the direction I took and we agreed to just use it as the outro.

The song was originally intended to be on Surreal's debut solo album titled "GODSPEED" which Jeremy released via RappersIKnow exclusively, before quickly having a change of heart and removing the album from existence.

On Feb 4th 2004 Our friend and fellow BeatFanatic Producer, Milton (RekOne) Cerda aka Tron ended up passing away from a fatal car accident on the way home from show, Our other friend and Beat Fanatic founder, T. the Beat Specialist (SlopFunkDust) was severely injured and Jeremy was supposed to drive with them, but ended up cancelling after working a long day and remembering he was supposed to watch a movie that night so he could debate it at work the following day.  This choice/path obviously weighed  heavily on him. Never knowing if he would have gone to the show if Rek would still be alive, or if he would have died or been severely injured also.

He was already very spiritual, but this event really sent him down deeper paths.  In the end, He chose to pull the album.  The title track "GODSPEED" was produced by RekOne.

We recorded this song in the studio along with the title track produced by Rek "GodSpeed" and a few other songs during the same session.  We cried a lot during that studio session wishing Rek was there to witness it all.

A few years later, when SlopFunkDust hit me up about releasing my sophomore album on Rawkus,  I reached out to Jeremy and asked If I could have the stems for "Life Lines" to put on "Crush Your System" He sent the 2 track instrumental and the Vocals, so I just added some things to the intro, and Processed and mixed out Vocals quickly.

This track ended up being one of my favorites songs in my catalog and also a fan favorite.  It was definitely my favorite era in terms of writing lyrics,  early to mid 20's hopeful for the future pushing through adversity with an unbreakable spirit.

and thus "Life Lines" was born.

"The song (BusStopBuildingBlock) was also a Nod to my Favorite group "The Nonce" (Sach & Yusef Afloat) Mostly known for their two video singles "Mixtapes" & "Bus Stops" off their album "World Ultimate" they were friends with the producer of the song Deeskee as well, so the plan was to get them on the song originally, but before I could finish writing my original verse,  Yusef Afloat committed suicide, which made me derail the song for year, before finally feeling comfortable enough to write and record to song meant to feature my favorite group.  Before Junk Planet was officially released in 2004,  2 full years after I was done recording it.  I was well into working on my next album (Music2SleepTo.../ Crush Your System) meant to be a double album, with one disk being all my production and Instrumental and the other disk being me emceeing over my favorite producer's beats.    Sach (The Nonce) and I ended up recording a song "5AM Flight '' over one of my beats in 2003"

Lyric Backstory:

My Parents were both music heads, super fans and collectors long before I was born.  My father was very intentional about playing music while I was still in my mother's womb and my first memories as an infant were all filled with music.  From Newborn until around 4 1/2 years old I have vivid memories of my Dad playing Jimi Hendrix, John Mclaughlin, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams, Chick Corea,  Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Yes, Jeff Beck,  While my mother fed me Amy Grant, Stevie Wonder's Innervisions album on repeat, A-ha, Hall & Oates, Depeche Mode, etc...  

I vividly remember while living in Leonia, New Jersey, being woken up in the middle of the night from my comfy Red Car Tent Bed, with Sheila (he-man) blanket wrapped around me, and being quietly escorted outside and into the back seat of the car which had brown and yellow blanket with a tiger on it (I still have this blanket, literally  right behind my back, propping me up as I type this) and there were two tiny dogs (real dogs) named Weiner and Schnitzel (my grandparents Dachshund's) My Grandfather was driving, with Nana in the passenger seat and we drove off... I must have fallen back asleep quickly after getting in the car, because when I woke up, the sun was out and my tiny a** had no idea what was going on, but was fascinated looking out the window for hours and hours staring at trees that were orange and red, and the more we drove, the greener they became.  We stopped at a rest area,  where my grandparent left me in the car and brought me this little board that had a face on it, with a stick attached with a magnet on it, they let me create hair, or mustaches or whatever on the faces...  This blew my mind, what kind of magic is this!!!!  Either way,  I was distracted and content with zero idea my grandparents were driving me all the way from New Jersey, to my new home in Twelve Oaks / Town n Country / Tampa, FL..   I can't remember ever questioning what was happening or missing my parents or new born baby brother.  I was distracted by staying up late, watching TV in the living room, being fed Peanut Butter Twix, large Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Popcorn and Soda.   In the daytime, I was distracted all day with a Talk N Play, and a MS-DOS based version of Asteroids my grandfather programmed and created himself that existed on an actual, floppy floppy disk...  Until one morning I was driven to this strange place called School (Kinder garden) haha.   Distracted by Alphabet People, Reading Rainbow and Naptime, I still seemed unbothered, off in my own world.  Shortly after new neighbors moved in and came over and introduced themselves, they had a son named Eric who was born exactly 3 days after I was.  He had a much bigger house, and more toys than I had ever seen before. This was my introduction to Dinosaurs and my longest and greatest best friend. (Goonies never say die!!!)

  A year Later, my Mother showed up with my little brother.  I spent most of my time living next door with Eric over the years, we played with micromachines, battle beats, visionaries, rocklords, inhumanoids, Airgear, literally every single toy brand that launched in the mid 80's to early 90's,  we were lost in escapism creating worlds with our imagination. two years after my mother and brother arrived, My Father showed up and we moved into our own separate house. (The Red House) This is where I first play Atari, NES, at neighbors houses, and every other memory attached to this house is tied to the playroom that smelled like playdough and was scattered with Transformers and GI-Joe Vehicles,  The only other vivid memories I have in this house, were all chilling on my parent bed playing moon patrol on my texas instrument console, Never being able to beat the last boss of Ninja Gaiden, getting scared playing Castlevania Simon's Quest when the day to turned to night and music changed. Renting Castlevania 3 and being amazed I could play as different characters that all functioned differently, and watching Nightmare on Elm street which traumatized my brother, but Freddy was too much of a jokester to phase me in the slightest.  There were no real memorable music moments beyond Eric playing a ridiculous amount of Bruce Springsteen,  My neighbors at the redhouse playing a ridiculous amount of Bon Jovi, and a very traumatizing moment spent crying in the bathroom at skateworld while vincent price narrated Michael Jackson's Thriller. (this painful memory was referenced years later subconsciously during an improv tascam freestyle that now forever exists on Chapter IV of The Daily Rambles Series haha)

The Next Chapter is where all the magic began.

Baywater Apartments, on Waters Ave.

This Apartment complex is where my pops finally got his record player, speakers, and all his records after not having access to them for a few years.  So the next few years of my life there were two constants.  Pop's get home from work, cooks, sits in his recliner, drinks, and blast records endlessly until 2 AM,  He didn't interact with us,  He  just blasted all the music I remember from living in New Jersey,  Air drumming in his chair with his drumsticks (I still have these, they are literally also right behind me on the shelf) and bopped his head and played an imaginary bass drum with his feet. Talking to him was pointless,He was in reach, but in outer space mentally.    

Kids have school in the morning?  who cares,  digest this frank zappa record on repeat,  "oh it got quiet,  maybe he's going to bed"..   Blast's Tom Waits,  while I can hear him audibly sobbing....    I love all of this music now. but at that time, I resented all this music keeping me from being able to sleep and being a zombie at school for years haha.      At the age of 14,  My Parents got a divorce, My Pops moved back to Jersey... and a year later, the young Producer, Rapper was born....From beats on Casio Keyboard, Making Pause mixtapes, Freestyling on a karaoke machine to Freestyle typing in the AOL HIPHOP Arts & Entertainment Chatroom along with other legends like Dakim, Atoms Family, Cannibal OX, Anticon, Chris Craft, the list goes on, My life forever changed from AOL chat room.  A few months later,  I was on the radio from a demo we (Celph Titled, Majik Most & Myself) recorded on a 4 track in my moms closet, to quickly level up, paying for Studio time, and having our first single on Vinyl while still in the 10th grade....

Backstory:

I began producing & writing & recording rhymes at the same time in 1995.  I started making beats on a Casio Keyboard w/ a looping Recording Functionality built it,  and began producing and chopping samples in 1997 on a MS-DOS tracker called Mod-Edit which was given to me by my friend and our (Equilibrium/Demigodz/AOTP) producer/emcee, Celph Titled.  The software was limited to 4 tracks,  enough for a kick, snare, hi-hat and sample,   I still have the cassettes of Every beat I made on the Casio and Everything I made in Mod-Edit.

Fast Forward to December 1999, while living in my first apartment as teenage adult located in Town 'n' Country (Tampa Bay, FL) w/ friend / room mate, / fellow Equilibrium group member/emcee, Majik Most  We had just returned home from visiting Celph Titled, who had recently moved from Tampa to Manhattan, NYC where he began working at Buds Distribution, while also gaining traction, expanding the Demigodz family after Apathy invited him to be the 3rd  member to join the roster.  

During our week long stay in NY, we met a lot of people, legends we grew up looking up to and got a lot of things done, including meeting up w/ Atoms Family / Cannibal Ox to record all our verses for our super collab "It Gets Worse" for my upcoming solo album, "Junk Planet"  After the session, our homie NEV took us to his crib in Queens, and brought us down to the basement where his studio was and that day would forever impact my life, since it was the first time I got see and learn how to use the iconic Akai MPC2000,  Nev Taught me how to sample in,  chop, program, add FX, Sequence and together we worked on what would be my first beat on the MPC2000. (I still have this on Cassette as well & Probably should have saved this part of the backstory for if I ever decide to upload it to the forever library but it's so relevant to the backstory this particular track being uploaded now)  

Majik knew how passionate I was about producing,  as much as I loved to express myself through writing and recording vocals.  There was an untapped, endless well of child-like wonder that was visibly noticeable when watching me talk about why I loved the production / beat side of music compared to emceeing.  Majik was always and still is very attentive and thoughtful, so between him watching me light up like a kid in the candy store learning how to make beats on the MPC in NEV's basement combined with knowing how sad I was that my means of fostering this area of creativity I  so badly wanted to keep exploring and mastering was miles away, since the PC I used up until that point to make beats using Mod-Edit was still at my mother's apartment.  So as an Early Xmas gift,  Majik rented me an MPC2000 for 31 days.....

I practically did a backflip, while screaming when I opened this surprise gift,  weeks before xmas.    This hardware was hella expensive at the time, and I could barely afford my half of the rent and bills at that age so I had zero hopes or expectations of getting the chance to play with one again anytime soon.    

31 days....    Do you know how long 31 days is  at the age of 18? Well maybe not in modern times, but this was the end of the century,  pre-smartphone, pre-social media,  pre-notifications, instant accessibility or distractions....       I had access to one thing I wanted most in the world at the time for an entire month.    I wasted ZERO time!.

I immediately went out and bought a box of Floppy disks, but I didn't have a turntable to sample records into the mpc....   But I did have a High Quality Dual Cassette Deck and Receiver.   So I called one of my other best friends,  Brian (who did not create music, but collected it at a scale that matched all of us around him who did.  For Years,  we had been making Themed mixtapes, across multiple genres of music (Which I also still have most of them on cassette) and Brian and I had very very similar tastes in the music we loved.   I knew he had a huge collection of records that wasn't hip-hop, and asked him to curate a full 90 minute tape, front to back, and fill it with songs he knew I would want to sample and told him I have only 30 days to get lost in wonder before this rented MPC2000 would turn back into a pumpkin and exit our lives....   2 days Later....    He brings me the Cassette... (which again,  I still have)....

I was only at NEV's crib for a few hours during our NYC visit,  and I've never been blessed with the gift of memory retention (something that not only still haunts me but has gotten exponentially  worse since 1999 haha.   So I had to relearn everything by scratch and by myself...   There was no such thing as youtube or tutorials of any kind back then.    So I did my best and learned on the fly through trial and error.   Between life, work, girlfriend and studio time for both the Equilibrium and my solo album.   I ended up with a Total of 9 beats and an outro (at least saved and recorded to Cassette) for that entire rental period.    

The first beat I ever attempted to make on my own using the MPC2000 with no help or guidance is the track this entire long winded back story is attached to.

After returning the rental MPC,  I was depressed like I lost my girlfriend or a family member.  I obsessed  over being able to own A beat machine.  Between spending a year watching friends cook up on various samplers,  SlopFunkDust aka T. The Beat Specialist rocking the ASR-10, Uncle Shredded Wheat rocking the MPC60,  Classical Rook (of the Justice League rocking the MPC2000XL right as it came out and no one letting me touch their samplers haha.   I was determined to save up and reunite with the MPC...  and in April of 2001, Majiks good friend Joe Riga decided he wanted to sell his....   Majik told me, he had a MPC2000 with No FX Board or Memory expansion and was letting it go for $600...   After some pleading and begging I finally was the owner of my very own MPC for $400   = )  

Shortly after this,  I was in a very severe car crash in which a Military Grade Hummer T-boned me Drivers side door going 60 mph while the driver was trying to evade the police.   Needless to say...  My spine got wrecked and music took a brief pause.    I was at the chiropractor's office, on the phone w/ lawyer  as he broke the news to me out of the 297k lawsuit coming to us I was only getting 12k of that (I went through my passengers mothers lawyer, and I barely knew the kid.  He was a friend of my at the time roommate, who wanted to ride w/ me to moms house to pick up my super nintendo after everyone partying at my house had the sudden urge to play mario kart)  While on the phone hearing this,  I watched 2nd plane fly into the twin towers on the TV in the waiting room.   Pretty unforgettable moment in time that distracted me from how badly my passengers' mom's lawyer finessed me and made me just appreciate being alive and honestly.    12k to me at the time was more money than I had ever seen.

I left the telemarketing company I was working at and started working at the Verizon Wireless Call Center.    The increase in Salary, Plus the settlement allowed me to enter the next chapter of adulthood and go from living with roommates, to renting my 1st Studio Apartment....

Alone, No Distractions....   Japanese/Egyptian house decor w/ hella plants,  An MPC2000,  A New PC that my ex girlfriend's father sold me  (which i still have)  and finally,  and Technique 1200 turntable, to sample from......

This is where I Began my first official (still unreleased) Instrumental album titled "Music2SleepTo..."

Fast Forward to late 2003, Aftering signing a record deal for first official solo emcee album "Junk Planet"  while trying to sequence the album before turning it in.  I decided, I really want my production to be included on my first album,  even if I wasn't rapping on it.     I didn't want to include any of my current production at the time because I was emotionally attached to releasing it as a full instrumental album in what I planned to be a double disk album, for my sophomore emcee album...

So I went back to that old tape of beats I made when Majik Rented me the MPC2000, and even though it sounded super dated it time (and sounds extremely dated in 2023 haha)  I'm a sucker for symbolic moments etched in time,  So I chose the very first beat I made from that first tape and put it as an interlude on Junk Planet.

The day I decided to do this, happened to be my favorite day of the year.   The day when (up until the last decade) without fail,  like clockwork,  the first chilly breeze, free of any ounce of humidity would come.

"OCTOBER 1st"

I'm reluctant to add this super basic, super dated beat to the forever library,  knowing that most people will never expand the description to read how old it is, let alone take the time to sit and read through a novel of context but...........      It's already cementing on Vinyl,  Already Cemented on CD,  and everywhere else since July 13th, 2004.        Tomorrow is never promised and today is OCTOBER 1st, 2023.

If this artifact ends up finding a home before the end of October,  I'll immediately upload that first beat I ever made on an mpc2000 in NEV's basement in Queens...

Backstory:

I met Sam back in 2003 via Myspace and we immediately bonded over our love for NES OSTS,  He would send me batches of the best beats I heard at the time,  at least in terms of originality and distinctness and tapping into to two things I love the most,  Hip-Hop and Nerd Culture.   At the time,  He sent a bunch of beats to rap on for my upcoming album, and also sent me tracks he was working on with an unknown producer at the time "Flying Lotus" who also shared a love for 8-bit OST's.

The first track I recorded produced by Sam was "Kill em in 8-bit" which wasn't meant to be an album track,  It was created specifically for a series of mixtapes I created titled "March of the Goonies" which was a series where I created very intentionally sequenced and mixed songs all centered around themes of Nerd Culture,  Video Games,  Comic Books, Cult Classic movies from the 80's & 90's.

These two very rare mixtapes, would end up spawning my blog dedicated to nerd culture and hip-hop "The Hobbyshop Hero"  which I ran 2007-2011 before pivoting to tumblr.

When SlopFunkDust (Beat Fanatic) became head A&R for Rawkus Records,  He reached out and asked me to release my upcoming album "Crush Your System" through the Labels "Rawkus 50" campaign.

 I immediately said yes,  but the timeline / deadline was very short to submit the album, which at the time was far from completion.  I quickly pivoted my initial concept of the double album titled "The NEXT Final Fantasy" which was one album as an Emcee "Crush Your System" and My (still unreleased) production album "Music 2 Sleep To..." and quickly turned in an album that wasn't finished and saved the 6 other tracks produced by Samiyam for what was supposed to be my next album as Dutchmassive titled "Romanticizing" which was all lost due to hard drive crash in 2011.

Samiyam, Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan ended up hitting me up around 2008/2009 letting me know he was coming down to Florida and coming to meet up with him,  He was looking to go to the renowned Full Sail University in Orlando, FL.  So my ex at the time and I drove up to Orlando to kick it, and I let him know my thoughts and feelings about living in Florida, as well as Full Sail (Since I also wanted to attend this school when I was younger) I expressed that the school is very expensive, and that his Ear as a musician was already good enough. Told him, beyond the expensive cost, I chose not to go the route of Full Sail for music, because I had no interest in opening a recording studio and spending my time mixing and mastering strangers' music that I probably wouldn't enjoy hearing.  I never asked him if this convo impacted his decision or not,  but very shortly after he moved to Los Angeles which ultimately was the best choice he could have made.

I hit up Sam when I learned I was going to be moving to Los Angeles in 2012, and he invited me to come chill at Low End Theory at the Airliner the week I got there.   

I still have the batches of beats he gave me to rap on, some of which he released as instrumentals on albums over the years,  If only people knew how old those beats were hahah.   Dope music is timeless.

Backstory:

"BusStopBuildingBlock" was the first official song I recorded as a solo artist. While in the middle of recording the Equilibrium album "Tropic States" (Unreleased) The 3 man group briefly lost a member... My best friend and the person I started emceeing serious with "Majik Most"

I won't go into details as to why the group was fractured, but I will give context as to why "BusStopBuildingBlock" was the first song I decided to record as a solo artist.

I have been freestyling and writing rhymes for fun since 1994, I freestyled very often to the point of annoyance (possibly autistic?) BusStopBuildingBlock is 100% a near perfect recall day.  So when I talk about battling old women, bugs, mall rent-a-cops, I wasn't trying to be funny. I freestyled 24/7,  battling my mom, my little brother, all in the hopes they would eventually try to battle back (which definitely eventually worked haha) I began freestyling or "keystyling" in AOL Chatrooms and just got super addicted.  When I eventually met Majik Most,  I saw him on the left side entrance of my apartment complex with a Walkman on and stopped him to ask what he was listening to.  We rode the school bus together but had never spoken up until that interaction.  He open up his Walkman to show me, acting super shy and mumbled "Murder was the case soundtrack"  Me, being the obnoxious young Dutch I was, made fun of him and told him "There's so much classic stuff out right now, and you're bumping a snoop soundtrack from 1994?" and brought him to my apartment and began to deep dive classic hip hop overload session.  He was aware of some of the dope stuff, but was excited to learn about so much dope new stuff.  Fast Forward a few months,  Majik's knowledge of hip hop was super deep, and the first time we freestyled,  he blew my mind,  He was so smart and complex and better freestyling than a lot of our favorite emcee's at the times writtens (Nas, Ras Kass, Organized Konfusion, Aceyalone, Mad Skillz, etc)  His written game was next level (for the time period we were in)  He was ahead of his time, and as soon as I gave him the confidence, he agreed to form a group and try to take it serious,  We began recording over beats I made on my Casio Keyboard back in 1995, and then eventually started rhyming over obscure instrumentals like to the KRS-ONE breaks (Instrumentals) We rode the city bus daily,  to the mall, to record shop, downtown, so when we were trying to come up with a group name, he wanted to call us the Binomial Bus Stop Building Blocks.  Which was way too long, So I suggested the Equinox.  In 96, while In a AOL Chat Room with many other now HipHop Legends,  Moodswing 9 of Live Poets (Anticon) told me about this producer that lived in Tampa who made original beats named Loklass (Celph Titled) He gave me Celph's Number and Majik and I Recorded a 9 minute demo song, trading verses back and forth over the B-side instrumental to Organized Noise cassette single.  We met up with Celph later that week at his job in the Mall, and immediately had him put on the headphones to listen to our demo as we excitedly and awkwardly silently stood by.   He was blown away, and took us to his car in the parking lot and played like 50 beats he made.  A Month later, We rented A tascam 4 track, and recorded the same verses we used for the demo over Celph's beat with him adding verses.  We recorded it in my moms closet, using her panty hose as a pop screen (A trick I learned from Celph) This song would be re-recorded in an actual Studio later and became the unreleased title track to the unreleased album "Tropic States".  We recorded two songs on the 4 track, Tropic States Demo and Inactive Movement Demo, and we debuted them Live on "The Underground Railroad" - Mad Lynx (RAPCITY) Local weekly show on 88.5 in Tampa.  We debuted under the group name Paradox (I Still have this interview and radio broadcast on tape and it's hella cringe to listen back to haha)  After that, We devolved professionally very quickly, Changing our name to Equilibrium and paying $165 hr studio rates every weekend at BaySound...    Celph and Majik had very similar humor, where I was a bit more serious and simple.  I guess I got this far, so I will give context into the group fracture haha.  Majik was super unfocused, Dating.  When he wasn't missing studio sessions, he was wasting money recording uninspired takes.  Celph had enough and gave Majik and Ultimatum mid recording session.  Majik called his girl at the time to pick him up and then Equilibrium became Celph Titled & Dutchmassive briefly (Reflected on our 2nd Vinyl 12" single)  Were we frustrated at the time?  yea,  we were young and prideful, and stubborn and all that jazz but we were still all best friends.  So when I had a chance to begin a solo career in tandem with our group project.  It only made sense for me to do a song that was Nod to Majik (since we stopped talked for a while) The song was also a Nod to my Favorite group "The Nonce" (Sach & Yusef Afloat) Mostly known for their two video singles "Mixtapes" & "Bus Stops" off their album "World Ultimate" they were friends with the producer of the song Deeskee as well, so the plan was to get them on the song originally, but before I could finish writing my original verse,  Yusef Afloat committed suicide, which made me derail the song for year, before finally feeling comfortable enough to write and record to song meant to feature my favorite group.  Before Junk Planet was officially released in 2004,  2 full years after I was done recording it.  I was well into working on my next album (Music2SleepTo.../ Crush Your System) meant to be a double album, with one disk being all my production and Instrumental and the other disk being me emceeing over my favorite producer's beats.    Sach (The Nonce) and I ended up recording a song "5AM Flight '' over one of my beats in 2003 and on July 13, 2004 (19 years ago Today)...  Junk Planet was released WorldWide on CD and Double Vinyl,  with the album being dedicated to Yusef Afloat in the thank you credits.     It all comes full circle.   This song is so special and over the years has touched so many people in profound ways that I never in a million years thought would happen, since I end the song lyrics self aware that the song was simple and not made for anyone but myself.

I wanted to save this for the 20th Anniversary,  but tomorrow if never promised.  So the 19th Anniversary. Documenting my first official solo song, that also perfectly adds so much context to the entire "The Reluctant Clap: Daily Rambles" series felt right.

I've also begun world building and documenting photos, videos, concept art, inspiration, show fliers, magazine press etc and organizing them by collections based on the albums, or time period.

and will be picking up the pace of adding artifacts that expand on context.  During this, I came across an article about "Junk Planet" that feels perfect.  So I'm going to share that here:

One of the signature tunes on this record - "The Hook" - came out in 2002. And reading the shouts, Dutch writes that "this album was created from 1997 - 2002." So let's do the math: the most recent stuff is two years old. Hmm… So what's the relevance of it today? In a market that finds a new trend every other month? Why even bother to listen to this old shish?
Okay now, settle down. Some stuff that Dutch addresses on here are actually even more pressing issues today than they were years ago. A great example of that is "Soul Searchin'" with PackFM. Dutch says: "great emcees are a thing of the past/ cats is either too simple or too abstract." He continues to talk about how bad distribution and recording companies are. And listening to this time machine moment, it's noteworthy how little has changed and how that little got worse rather than better.
But maybe we should take a step back and discuss who this Dutch dude is: part of Equilibrium, the group with Celph Titled and Majik Most who blew into the scene with "Farenheit 813" and "Windows 98." With the latter using the Windows signature start up sound. What spun the rumor that Gates was threatening them with a lawsuit. He didn't. The guys made that up for some extra attention. The 12" came out when having a vinyl record was still a big thing and when there was no CD-R alternative. Heck, chances were that you were good when you got a 12" out. What also explains the incredible number and talent of guests that's on this album. Be it on the previously mentioned "The Hook" that features Apathy, Majik Most, C-Rayz Walz, Celph Titled and louis logic, or be it on "It Gets Worse" with Windnbreeze, Alaska, Cryptic One and Vast Aire.
Dutch is in many ways a bad mouth, spending many songs not saying much. Like the battle verses on "Crush Your Interlude" or "The Ego Has Landed", both over very early 90s beats. But the best song on here is "BusStopBuildingBlock," which in many ways is a tribute to The Nonce. A group that must have influenced Dutch, also considering that he specifically gives Yusef Afloat a R.I.P. in the credits. The flow is very much like theirs, the 'bus stop' rhetoric similar too and the beat by westcoast can-we-please-give-this-man-his-deserved props Deeskee fits the vibe perfectly. Making this song a homage, even if it wasn't meant to be. Deeskee actually did more songs on here: the humorous "Just Me & My Walkman", the interlude "Take A Break", the not quite thrilling "Pipe Dreams" and the friendly "My Own Shit". So Dutch and Deeskee are actually - and quite surprisingly - quite the dream team.
Other producers on this record include J.J. Brown (on the excellent "Dr. Ama" amongst other songs), J.Rawls, Celph Titled, Benefit, previously mentioned Deeskee, Ayentee, Main and Dutch himself. Who's actually quite a dope producer, as shown on Interludes like "October 1st" and "Went To A Whole Different Planet". As well as some unreleased material that hopefully eventually surfaces. The beats Dutch selected though are very related in vibe, and the numerous producers are not what's holding this album back. While the songs themselves are actually really good, you can tell that they were not recorded with one release in mind. It's a compilation of tracks by one artist and thus it's kinda hard to really get a feel for the album. And then there's also a "1995 Equilibrium Answering Machine Tape Freestyle Disaster" that also does little for the audience.
But even with these few and not that important dampers, the record is actually really good. It comes out late and it runs the risk of becoming one of those unnecessary sleeper hits. But you're in the know now. There's no excuse to not check this out.

In Closing:

Let's be real, Let's be honest, Let's be Real Honest....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,  Art/Music is the most subjective thing on the Planet.  The same sentiment applies to value right?  but at a certain point, with enough context and research, there is music/art that is objectively high value.  At a certain point, history, impact and culture should play a role in value.  I have zero expectations on my art being collected,  but Objectively, If you take the time to click through all of the songs on my Dutchmassive & Dutchyyy Artist profiles and actually read the super long back stories.  My passion to express has rippled and been at the forefront of every major underground cultural shift in underground hip hop and instrumental hip hop.  Search engines don't allow for proper research anymore.  Results are scrubbed and replaced.  Social Media can never point to value in modern times because 99% of everyone's interactions are calculated and performative and RNG.  Streaming metrics can't point to value, because that system is also luck based, and you have people like myself, who rebelled uploading their catalog to DSP's for years. 

So what makes music valuable?  what would be considered a onchain music bluechip?

I guess that's subjective.  

I hope it's not defined by active participation, popularity.      I hope it's defined by the only thing that matters.   The Music.

I'm the cliché starving artist that rebelled against all the trends only to end up a literal early 40's starving artist haha.  But my journey is valuable, my story is valuable and my expression is powerful.   

and I would love to keep being able to share my expression,  and would absolutely love to prove to the world through sincere expression, transparency & consistent determination, that "Music is the Utility" and is the most valuable culture signal on this planet.      That's the optimist in me,  the realist is prepared and well aware we exist in "Junk Planet" =)

WORLDBUILDING/BACKSTORY/CONTEXT:

Let's Begin...

   Every single word spoken in the "DailyRambles" Series (2015-2022) is 1000% Freestyle. Documenting the present. Improv, in the moment, spontaneous, off the dome freestyle. I have to over explain to ensure it's understood not a single thought or word was written because the term "Freestyle" has changed over the years and doesn't hold the same meaning it once did when I began freestyling late 1994 or keystyling in aol chat rooms in 1995, The term freestyle lost its original meaning and became a loophole for releasing a written track via mixtapes and stuff like that. This series is pure, in the moment freestyle. None of which was ever intended to be heard publicly. My Private creative sandbox / diary to have fun & experiment with being 100% present in the unknown. Due to the lack of pressure often that comes with releasing music into the world. The Peace I had, knowing all of these would never reach human ears other than my own created this perfect utopia of being able to bob and weave in and out of being silly and having fun, flowing from gibberish to super stream of conscious flow state introspective, venting and being completely vulnerable. The Series didn't begin with this intention though. Chapter I (2015-2016) began after purchasing the Tascam DR-05 field recorder with the intention of writing to all the beats I collected from my favorite producers in case I ever decided to write and record a new Dutchmassive album. That intention was swiftly derailed by how much fun I was having being mobile, out in public and finally having the ability to record in real time, over a beat any and everywhere other than stuck in doors.  While Chapter I was me freestyling over beats I always intended to write to.  The Series took a turn and evolved moving forward beginning with Chapter II (2017).  I became really addicted to being creative in the moment and wanted to challenge myself.  So I reached out to my favorite producers to send me batches of beats, I would not listen to them at all until they were loaded up into the Tascam. The first time you are hearing the beat, was the first time I was hearing the beat. My thought process at the time was, If the right beat came on that could finally inspire me to sit and write, I would know immediately based on how my voice fit or how moved I was to take it seriously.  Blindly Freestyling and adapting to beats in real time meant there were going to be beats I don't like, or I may like but know my voice isn't suited for, so when those would pop up, you could hear me acting more silly, altering my voice to match the beat. To add an extra layer of challenge, 95% of the daily rambles series is recorded outside in public.  Parks, Beaches, everywhere. In Chapter I, they were all recorded outside but I tried my hardest to find places no humans were. So most were recorded super late at night walking around.  Chapter II, I wasn't in a location where no humans around was as easy so I leaned into.  Which is why you can hear my whisper, ramble, while reacting to what's happening in real time.  Being at the park, in the zone,  when 3 soccer moms pushing strollers pass looking at me like I was crazy haha, Judgmental staring from men in business suits. I used this as therapy to get over my fear of overcrowded surroundings after spending an extended period in magical secluded isolation on a nature preserve in upstate NY. It was fun and healing.  By Chapter III, I attempted to record rambles in my house. Something that was harder than it sounds because my house was the corner lot, and a very busy road with heavy traffic and the mic would pick up the cars zooming by. but I attempted it and it was a dope change of pace, being able fully project my voice, being extra silly and at ease enough to be super vulnerable.
You'll notice a theme from Chapter I - V where I subtly speak on my health, and give myself pep talks.  I was going through crazy health changes I did not understand and was embarrassed to talk about publicly.  By Chapter IV, My health became much more severe, as did my natural self preservation coping mechanism of giving myself pep talks or being sarcastic making light of it all. With fears of 6 figure surgery that had 80+ % chance of permanent facial paralysis, I freestyled my little heart out in access, and even considered possibly making all the freestyles public, just not attached to my name.  Thus the alias "The Reluctant Clap" was born.   The Reluctant Clap had multiple meanings for me, these private whisper freestyles were my way of expressing during a time where If I sat down and wrote, I would be calling out the insane B.S. happening in the world and in my life in general, but I held back.  Also speaks to how so many people are secretly fans of your art, but in the age of algorithms, it's not cool to applaud your inspirations publicly. Towards the end of Chapter IV, My health got way more scary, and my rambles reflected this, by December 2019 my Last contract working at the Harlem Hospital in NY, The Physician I was teaching saw I could barely stand, and asked all my symptoms and told me to go to the ER immediately when I returned to Tampa. I explained I lost health insurance after moving back to Florida, and he taught me a work around.  Told me to wait exactly 61 days after receiving my last paycheck, and I would be able to get seen without fear of going into medical debt for the rest of my life. I was 2 weeks away from day 61,  went out in public for the last time toward the end of February with my good friend and fellow producer Lofidel, felt hopeful and happy and as soon as he left, I stayed and walked the streets next to the ocean and recorded what would become the last Freestyles before the world would change,  A week later, Lockdown. Extreme fear,  The Physicians I taught contacted me and told me this is very serious and avoid going anywhere near a hospital until this passes.      August 2020.  After receiving an eviction notice from my house (my career traveling the states teaching at hospitals was obviously not possible) so with plans to move back up to NY or Los Angeles, I received a call from uncle demanding I move in with 90+ grandmother as she wasn't handling being alone during the pandemic well at all. Which brings us to Chapter V (2020-2022)

 I did everything humanly possible to course correct my health on my own, while being super productive musically, streaming on twitch constantly, learning defi, creating a virtual avatar to stream with that controls Ableton Live since being on camera was not possible in my condition and it was important for me to world build and make the experience unique and special.  I pushed through silently pretending, masking pain through productivity until my symptoms reached a level I could not pretend anymore. I lost the ability to sit up in chairs, was rendered to existing sideways on the floor, always in pain, and put that pain into music to heal. I had zero control over my body, and that became impossible to hide so I isolated from every community, left every discord, stopped streaming and began preparing and archiving my entire creative body of work 1995-present to put on USB drives, while learning about global markets and defi and trying to find a way to bring myself back to a baseline normal life, without having to burden anyone with how severe my health is, and it just kept and keeps getting worse.  I still manage to make light of it and try to remain positive, but at times you feel reality creep through. I never intended to release these publicly but as health turned much worse, I kinda leaned into doing these publicly, A Few were done live on IG or Twitch, while making the beats live at the same time. But I never intended to release the whole series due to the pride of people not understanding the context around gibberish freestyles or the chance of people thinking they are written thought out songs. Thanks to a little push and perspective from @cxy I was convinced that this series is probably my most important body of work across my 30 year long career and to be brave and courageous.  So here I am, Reluctantly oversharing, finally committing.   I present to you, "The Reluctant Clap" (DailyRambles)

WORLDBUILDING/BACKSTORY/CONTEXT:

Let's Begin...

   Every single word spoken in the "DailyRambles" Series (2015-2022) is 1000% Freestyle. Documenting the present. Improv, in the moment, spontaneous, off the dome freestyle. I have to over explain to ensure it's understood not a single thought or word was written because the term "Freestyle" has changed over the years and doesn't hold the same meaning it once did when I began freestyling late 1994 or keystyling in aol chat rooms in 1995, The term freestyle lost its original meaning and became a loophole for releasing a written track via mixtapes and stuff like that. This series is pure, in the moment freestyle. None of which was ever intended to be heard publicly. My Private creative sandbox / diary to have fun & experiment with being 100% present in the unknown. Due to the lack of pressure often that comes with releasing music into the world. The Peace I had, knowing all of these would never reach human ears other than my own created this perfect utopia of being able to bob and weave in and out of being silly and having fun, flowing from gibberish to super stream of conscious flow state introspective, venting and being completely vulnerable. The Series didn't begin with this intention though. Chapter I (2015-2016) began after purchasing the Tascam DR-05 field recorder with the intention of writing to all the beats I collected from my favorite producers in case I ever decided to write and record a new Dutchmassive album. That intention was swiftly derailed by how much fun I was having being mobile, out in public and finally having the ability to record in real time, over a beat any and everywhere other than stuck in doors.  While Chapter I was me freestyling over beats I always intended to write to.  The Series took a turn and evolved moving forward beginning with Chapter II (2017).  I became really addicted to being creative in the moment and wanted to challenge myself.  So I reached out to my favorite producers to send me batches of beats, I would not listen to them at all until they were loaded up into the Tascam. The first time you are hearing the beat, was the first time I was hearing the beat. My thought process at the time was, If the right beat came on that could finally inspire me to sit and write, I would know immediately based on how my voice fit or how moved I was to take it seriously.  Blindly Freestyling and adapting to beats in real time meant there were going to be beats I don't like, or I may like but know my voice isn't suited for, so when those would pop up, you could hear me acting more silly, altering my voice to match the beat. To add an extra layer of challenge, 95% of the daily rambles series is recorded outside in public.  Parks, Beaches, everywhere. In Chapter I, they were all recorded outside but I tried my hardest to find places no humans were. So most were recorded super late at night walking around.  Chapter II, I wasn't in a location where no humans around was as easy so I leaned into.  Which is why you can hear my whisper, ramble, while reacting to what's happening in real time.  Being at the park, in the zone,  when 3 soccer moms pushing strollers pass looking at me like I was crazy haha, Judgmental staring from men in business suits. I used this as therapy to get over my fear of overcrowded surroundings after spending an extended period in magical secluded isolation on a nature preserve in upstate NY. It was fun and healing.  By Chapter III, I attempted to record rambles in my house. Something that was harder than it sounds because my house was the corner lot, and a very busy road with heavy traffic and the mic would pick up the cars zooming by. but I attempted it and it was a dope change of pace, being able fully project my voice, being extra silly and at ease enough to be super vulnerable.
You'll notice a theme from Chapter I - V where I subtly speak on my health, and give myself pep talks.  I was going through crazy health changes I did not understand and was embarrassed to talk about publicly.  By Chapter IV, My health became much more severe, as did my natural self preservation coping mechanism of giving myself pep talks or being sarcastic making light of it all. With fears of 6 figure surgery that had 80+ % chance of permanent facial paralysis, I freestyled my little heart out in access, and even considered possibly making all the freestyles public, just not attached to my name.  Thus the alias "The Reluctant Clap" was born.   The Reluctant Clap had multiple meanings for me, these private whisper freestyles were my way of expressing during a time where If I sat down and wrote, I would be calling out the insane B.S. happening in the world and in my life in general, but I held back.  Also speaks to how so many people are secretly fans of your art, but in the age of algorithms, it's not cool to applaud your inspirations publicly. Towards the end of Chapter IV, My health got way more scary, and my rambles reflected this, by December 2019 my Last contract working at the Harlem Hospital in NY, The Physician I was teaching saw I could barely stand, and asked all my symptoms and told me to go to the ER immediately when I returned to Tampa. I explained I lost health insurance after moving back to Florida, and he taught me a work around.  Told me to wait exactly 61 days after receiving my last paycheck, and I would be able to get seen without fear of going into medical debt for the rest of my life. I was 2 weeks away from day 61,  went out in public for the last time toward the end of February with my good friend and fellow producer Lofidel, felt hopeful and happy and as soon as he left, I stayed and walked the streets next to the ocean and recorded what would become the last Freestyles before the world would change,  A week later, Lockdown. Extreme fear,  The Physicians I taught contacted me and told me this is very serious and avoid going anywhere near a hospital until this passes.      August 2020.  After receiving an eviction notice from my house (my career traveling the states teaching at hospitals was obviously not possible) so with plans to move back up to NY or Los Angeles, I received a call from uncle demanding I move in with 90+ grandmother as she wasn't handling being alone during the pandemic well at all. Which brings us to Chapter V (2020-2022)

 I did everything humanly possible to course correct my health on my own, while being super productive musically, streaming on twitch constantly, learning defi, creating a virtual avatar to stream with that controls Ableton Live since being on camera was not possible in my condition and it was important for me to world build and make the experience unique and special.  I pushed through silently pretending, masking pain through productivity until my symptoms reached a level I could not pretend anymore. I lost the ability to sit up in chairs, was rendered to existing sideways on the floor, always in pain, and put that pain into music to heal. I had zero control over my body, and that became impossible to hide so I isolated from every community, left every discord, stopped streaming and began preparing and archiving my entire creative body of work 1995-present to put on USB drives, while learning about global markets and defi and trying to find a way to bring myself back to a baseline normal life, without having to burden anyone with how severe my health is, and it just kept and keeps getting worse.  I still manage to make light of it and try to remain positive, but at times you feel reality creep through. I never intended to release these publicly but as health turned much worse, I kinda leaned into doing these publicly, A Few were done live on IG or Twitch, while making the beats live at the same time. But I never intended to release the whole series due to the pride of people not understanding the context around gibberish freestyles or the chance of people thinking they are written thought out songs. Thanks to a little push and perspective from @cxy I was convinced that this series is probably my most important body of work across my 30 year long career and to be brave and courageous.  So here I am, Reluctantly oversharing, finally committing.   I present to you, "The Reluctant Clap" (DailyRambles)

Backstory:

Last album released rapping as Dutchmassive was released in 2007 on Rawkus Records.

Social media and life kind of killed the magic of words for me. I see too many thoughts daily, So I shifted my creative energy into expression without words. beats, keys, sample manipulation, experimenting with creating new worlds from nothing, or evolving a sample into the unrecognizable just music in general, just speaking without using words.

Hip Hop stopped inspiring or surprising me, with minimal exceptions. The fun aspect of being an emcee or making music kind of fell out of style. where up until about 2011, it was everywhere, so accessible. such a vibe, easy to bounce that creative energy back into the world.

but I still am an emcee, passionate, over talkative, TMI, super expressive human IRL.

but losing chronologic timelines on social media (yep I'm going there again) really changed how humans communicate online. Expansive conversations don't happen by design, everything is fragmented, and anything long form is taboo, especially using your words to communicate on these apps. you see a paragraph, you think rant. Crazy right? I'm the crazy one? nah this new fragmented, A.I. manipulated timeline we all living in doesn't want nor allow for expansive dialog to happen in real time anymore. Everyone's on a soap box, trapped, reacting, and dunking basically always in offense or defense mode. hahaha I grew tired of battle rap in the early 2000's, now soccer moms, senators and the whole worlds has battle rap energy haha.

You think this discouraged me, nah. I let that lil light shine in private haha, I missed when hip-hop was fun, so I had fun with hip-hop in private, got all my venting out and recorded it every time. Freestyling and flipping samples is all do, while rebelling publicly, hoarding insane amounts of beats, and albums, I got super addicted to recording everything in real time.. The rawest and truest form of expression.... having fun, being introspective on autopilot.

Absolute freedom.

but this stuff was never intended to be heard by anyone. DailyRambles is me loading up a batch of beats on the Tascam DR-05 that I haven't listened to yet, and blindly freestyling and seeing which ones move me enough to make me wanna sit and write, and having fun with the ones that don't fit my voice or style and have fun trying to make it work.

I had zero intentions to make any of these freestyles public,  but due to severe health complications, I might not always be here and even if I am able to somehow course correct by pure miracle and insane amounts of debt,  it would alter my ability to speak the same and/or articulate the way I do now. 

There may never be another well thought out, written and recorded "Dutchmassive" album in the future. But there is 6 years worth of "DailyRambles" right now.
I'm reluctant about even dropping this as Dutchmassive, even though polls on all "social media" unanimously chose it over the alias "Reluctant Clap"

I won't always be here. I'd rather this silly introspective gibberish be out in the world, then locked away on my hard drive.

Back Story before the Backstory:

I don't know where to begin?  A brief summary?  I began recording freestyles on my moms Panasonic Auto Logic Answering Machine late 1994? Early 1995? (one of these was actually released on my Debut Album "Junk Planet" as a skit/interlude,  Where Celph Titled, Majik Most & Myself were all just being goofy freestyling over Celph's beats (you can hear my mom yelling and my little brother squealing) but that came later haha,  I started alone, and I moved to freestyling on a karaoke machine summer of 1995.  (I Literally have every single one of these recordings on cassette still which is crazy)  Fast Forward, late 1996. Early 1997 I got a Sony Walkman that came with a lapel mic, So I was able to play beats and freestyle, talk and record directly on it.  I brought it everywhere,  Recording everything,  Walking alone at night, talking to myself,  freestyling...  just expressing...   This died down as my career took off and what started as a hobby just having fun,  Led to having Multiple Vinyl singles while still in high school.  My Daily Rambles Tradition just fell off as I became an official artist focused on writing and recording songs.  My Writing Method was the same though,  I never could focus being idle with pen and paper,  So a lot of freestyling catching how I wanted to fit on the beat first, then refine my thoughts after pacing in circles outside.    Daily Rambles picked back up after cell phones that record voice memos  became a thing.  This method was flawed because there was no way to play music and record vocals on phones, a decade passed and this still wasn't possible.  The Lyrics I write are of course important, but recording lyrics without having the beat to reference,  I would tend to forget how my cadence was originally intended,  which I'm very intentional about.  I played Quads, and Lead Snare in the marching band,  So how I rode a beat was more important than what I was saying at times..           Fast Forward Another Decade,  Post Rawkus, Post Chill Gawd, Chill..   Tampa, to La, back to Tampa, Up to New York (Now is probably a good time to open up another tab and read the back stories for "By Design" & "Oh, Pen..." Since I just filled in a lot of this context.    I recorded my Last Voice Memo Freestyle (which was also my 1st voice memo freestyle since the like 2010?) and searched again for a work around to be able to record vocals on the phone while also playing the beat on the phone (this did not exist as of October 2015)  My Search led me to the Tascam Field Recorder.  So I wasted no time,  rode my moped up to Guitar Center and copped the Tascam DR-05 as soon as I got paid....

Backstory:

I copped the Tascam... Fast Forward A week or so Later,  After finalizing Traversal, I...  had a really bad day...   The Entire (Post NY) back in Tampa Mini Arc was just traumatic.  I left Tampa for A reason haha.  Long Story Short,  I had not seen my younger brother since early 2012 right before I moved to Los Angeles (The first time)  Then I was living in NY 2014-end of summer 2015.   I felt super Uprooted, Traversing State to State,  Super untethered and just needed to feel grounded and see my little brother.  Called him explaining what was happening and that I needed to escape where I was currently living for a few hours,  and he said, "I'm not driving there, and wasting gas"  I was leaving in a few days to work a month long contract out of state teaching at the hospital,  and when my contract was ending,  He was leaving on one,  So it was the chance I could see him.    So, even though I lived pretty far (considering I had Moped, and not a car) I hopped on my 2007 Tomos Targa LX Moped and told him I would meet him somewhere closer to where he lived.  We decided that we would meet at the Causeway (Long Road / Bridge connected Tampa and Clearwater in the middle of the Ocean (Gulf if we are being technical)..  I got there around 8pm and waited silently,  staring out into the ocean (something I did miss about living in Tampa) and I waited, and I waited,  and I called, and Texted..  and about a Quarter after 10pm,  He texted me saying he's not gonna make it,  then never responded after....      I brought my Newly Purchased Tascam with me,  thinking I could do some field recordings of the waves....  So I dug it out of my backpack and turned it on,  took a few minutes to figure out how it works,  then I stood on the rocks at the edge of the bridge to record the sound of the ocean,  but the waves stopped... It was a Sunday Night,  but there were so many people partying and being loud.   It's usually the hangout spot on Friday / Saturday,  but Sunday was usually empty...    So the weight of everything going on in my life, combined with that last sigh of feeling like the Universe was pranking me by making the ocean still just as I went to record waves and how the noise of cars and people partying got way louder in that moment......     well..........     This Recording was born.     I had Zero Intentions of Freestyling,  I just pressed record and blacked out on autopilot and ended up recording one of the most personal, vulnerable and exposed thoughts blacked out in the flow state, unintended and just let my soul explode, while drunk girls kept trying to get my attention and kept going until I realized a huge storm was heading my way and I had to drive 17 miles, on a moped that went 35 mph max speed haha....

That session was unplanned and the most cathartic experience.  Though there was no way another human, outside of my room mate at the time I would ever let hear it.     

That Traumatic ass day, night, week, month was erased with a single recording...   I would come to find out that recording blindly without zero pressure of anyone ever getting to hear them, led to the most healing, fun and addictive form of expression I ever experienced...    From Nov 1st, 2015 - Present Day.    I would ritually and secretly continue and evolve this process which completely changed my approach creating music and expressing in general.          Enter a new Private Era.....  Documenting in real time, raw expression w/ zero filter or over thinking......... 

This was the Rebirth of the Daily Ramble....

While Listening back through the Aux connected to my JBL mini speaker on Loop, I spontaneously started freestyling into my outdated crappy android phone.

After listening to the freestyle back, I was strangely satisfied that an unplanned freestyle session actually turned out super cohesive in terms of documenting my experience creating Traversal.      

But it sounded horrible haha, you can barely hear the vocals....     This is when I said "Enough is Enough" and searched endlessly for a work around or app that would let you play music on the phone while also recording your vocals on the phone....   it did not exist at this time.......      Further searches lead me to the "Tascam DR-05" and as I closed the chapter on Traversal. (The Digital Version at least) A new Chapter Began.

Long Story Long,  I wrote and recorded two songs shortly after moving to Los Angeles (summer/fall 2012) and then completely stopped writing songs and hard pivoted to a Producer main (Dutchyyy) and informally retired the "Dutchmassive" chapter of my life.   During my time (1st time) living in Los Angeles (Early 2012 - Spring 2014) I created "Chill Gawd, Chill" (120 minute Cassette) and Began my next album "The Uproot" towards the tail end of that Arc.   At the same time,  I was collecting beats from my favorite producers to "potentially" use if I ever decided to Record another Dutchmassive album.  Now, being in Los Angeles around so many like minded, super talented creatives all making dope beats and doing shows weekly meant,  I was in freestyle heaven,  able to bounce spontaneous, fun, improv freestyles off other people (Something I never really had in Tampa after the 90's)  While I had zero impulse or urge to ever sit (or walk) and purposely write a song.  Getting in the habit of allowing myself to have fun with hip hop, just freestyling with friends flexing my improv muscle and scratching that ego driven / competitive / show off itch was a much needed change of pace.  but........  there is a very distinct personality clash with most people I've met born and raised on the west coast that doesn't quite speak the same language as us overly expressive, ball busting (in jest/ out of love) speak your mind loudly east coast personalities.   Which was something I've never really encountered before in excess living on the east coast.     So there were definitely a lot of times where jokes or sincerity did not land and created friction.   Around the end of 2013,  My long term "Dutchmassive" fans were coming out of the woodwork, all vocally frustrated to see everything I was releasing was Instrumental.   There was an enormous amount of pressure from long term and even new fans that recently stumbled on my debut solo album "Junk Planet" and they were bombarding me daily to please return to the vibe and style of that album I created as a teenager.   I did my best to explain that while I'll always have that side of me that wants to call out B.S.   The whole Ego Arc was loooong looooong past, and I'd never be able to replicate an album I created mid/late 90's in my teens, as a 30+ man that just wants to inspire people but I did my best to least semi play that role on social media to keep fans from completely jumping ship.  At the same time,  a lot of the more "conscious" people (mostly more mature women) in my circle, were yelling at me to dead all that public ego / bravado and just evolve into who I am currently and let the old fans move on if they don't like who I had been growing into.

I remember like yesterday, being at the airport, leaving Los Angeles to move back to Tampa Bay, and my friend "ReyofLight'' literally yelling at me on the phone about this.      I Landed back In Tampa feeling confused, conflicted, pulled in all directions, and I had no idea how bad my short stay in Tampa was about to be....    I'm not even going to expand on that backstory,  but fast forward a month or two and homie Sammy the Sleezbag hit me up after seeing and hearing about what I was dealing with and offered me a free room to stay in at his house in NY,  the only stipulation was that while I'm there, I write and record new music.       About a month into my stay, We drove out to meet up with people Celph Titled and Apathy of (The Demigodz / Army of the Pharaohs)  who still made that super aggressive battle rap I was trying so hard to move on from.  Apathy pulled me aside and said, he would produce a whole album for me, and not to worry about trying to be overly aggressive and lean into my more personal songs like "Bus Stop Building Block" or "Just me & my Walkman" cus that's his favorite version of me.  I thanked him, and agreed and he sent me batches of beats to choose from.    I ended up writing and recording two songs, one being a part two to "My own sh*t" from Junk Planet where I addressed in great detail the pull and push I was getting from fans to display an Ego through music I no longer possessed.   Probably one the dopest songs I've written and homie Lord Digga (from Masta Ace) came through and laid a verse on the song as well.

A few days Later,  My Pops, who I hadn't seen or spoken to since the early 2000's,  saw I was living in NY and reached out to me, and asked If I wanted to come visit him for the weekend, since he lived like 90 minutes from where I was staying,  I was very reluctant to reconnect but figured life is too short to hold grudges, and he came and picked me up........

but Long Story Short...    I Promised Sam I would write and record a song for this historic album/mixtape he was A&Ring for years, getting verses from Golden Era and Independent HipHop Legends....     He begged me to please, just give him one last "Take no shit / attack mode" Dutchmassive verse,  but I was happy and in a good space..   So I channeled all the energy into calling out the hypocritical B.S. that was happening after I left Los Angeles,  as the scene pivoted from beat scene, to future bass / mashup / remix culture with a dash of insane twitter ego and told same, I'm announcing my retirement as Dutchmassive in this song just to let you know haha.   

Secretly I was stacking beats from homies at a more rapid pace, to begin a new album minus the Dutchmassive name and the expectations that came with it.

This would be the very last song, that I both, wrote and officially recorded as Dutchmassive up until this date (6/01/2023)  

The Private Nature Preserve I was living at in upstate NY w/ my Father, where I grew, healed spiritually, and felt at peace, was suddenly bought out by the State, and we had to move with a week's notice.    A few months later, I ended up back in the place I kept trying to escape haha, Tampa, Florida..  Where I would return to an insane amount of trauma and hardship once again, but also finished and released "Traversal" .......       and now the entire reason, I minted this song and "Oh, Pen..."

I already explained that I have never been able to sit inside and write lyrics..    but I don't think I mentioned the part about how I wrote lyrics since the mid 90's...       Back then, I had a Sony Walkman that came with a lapel mic.      So my version of writing lyrics was freestyling gibberish over and over and letting myself piece together the cohesive parts on paper later.      After smartphones became a thing,   I pivoted to doing this via voice memo...        The Problem with this method was you could not play music on the phone and also record a voice memo,  So I always had to walk around with the phone to record into, and a walkman, Cd player, ipod attached to a mini speaker for this work, or else I would never remember how my cadence was intended to me (which was always my most important first step with writing)...    So here I am in Tampa once again,  I Just released "Traversal" and the homie Fresh Daily, hit me up to be on Collab, and at the same time, the homie Astrological from PotatoheadPeople hit me up to record a song for their new album and the beat he sent me was perfect.   Holding the phone, mp3 player and bluetooth speaker method was too distracting, So I looked everywhere to see if there was a work around on the android phones, where you could play and hear a beat, and record over on the phone..     It did not exist......  but my search led me to the TASCAM DR-05..........

So I went and copped one....

I've had the Tascam since the end of 2015, and have recorded hundreds of files on it.        But I only used it one time, for its original intended purpose which was to write new songs......  "Planets in Orbit" would be the Actual last song I ever wrote,  but write after I finished writing it,  I got a call from homie Josh Jetson (Sunjet) telling me to move back out to Los Angeles and He has a Room for me as long as I need,  48 hrs Later,  I'm living in Downtown Los Angeles.....        April 2016.....     I couldn't really focus on music,  had no place to record that verse and had to find a job.    Landed a Job doing the same thing I did for Warner Brothers but now for Netflix..  (MASTER QC)  A month Later,  My mother suddenly passed away, the same hour they pulled the plug, NetFlix fired me for posting an image on twitter of the Netflix logo (They geolocated it I guess)  48 hour later guess where I am.......  Back In Tampa, Florida....        Where I would completely pivot my approach to creating music across the board.   I had a major beef with finality, So I rebelled against it with every fiber of my being.... Continuing with a series I began after the first time I ever used the Tascam...        The Daily Rambles..   from 2015-2022, I would secretly be recording daily freestyles, documenting the next 5 or 6 separate  arcs of my life, with zero intention of ever letting anyone hear these recordings..   As they were a hybrid of my own personal journal and sandbag I would use to train and keep my creative juices flowing minus any pressure, expectations and just have fun while also being super super introspective and vulnerable between mumbling quietly in public where 90 percent of these were recorded.     At the Same time,  I stopped Releasing official albums, and began #EvolvingPortals which is the same concept as DailyRambles / The Reluctant Clap....    1 take, live, long form recordings of the entire process of working on music, mistakes and all and riding the unknown like it's the main instrument.......

There is so much context I'm leaving out,  It's too heavy, embarrassing and scary.....None of these were Recorded with the intention of being heard by the public....that was the whole point.   The Freestyles were my safe space to express all the things I was too proud to share with the world.    But if you've been following my journey since 2017/2018 you can tell I'm in preserve the legacy mode, on my own terms because tomorrow is never promised,  So DailyRambles/EvolvingPortals have been my way to stay 100% present in the flowstate, to escape the embarrassing and unbearable painful reality that my body is failing at a rapid rate and degrading exponentially, and I'm way too prideful to tell people how bad it really is, and equally prideful and have had a fear that If I make all these recordings public,  people won't understand the context and think they are written songs, when every single one is 100% improv and also not meant to be shared hahaha.  As my health got worse the past few years, I contemplated secretly releasing them all under an alias.....  That alias become "The Reluctant Clap"    
   
  I was recently inspired by my friend Cxy that what I've accomplished documenting consistently in private is beyond special and deserves to be heard.  To drop my pride and fear and let anyone patient enough to sit through hours of chronological creative context into my most personal and unfiltered thoughts....         There's so much more context hahah,  I should have saved all this for when they actually drop.

Backstory:

This was the last song I wrote while living in Tampa Bay before Losing what would have been my 3rd official solo album as Dutchmassive titled "Romanticizing" on Xmas Day (Night) to A Fatal "Blue Screen Of Death ''.  Every year, like clockwork, the first chilly day of the year would always start on October 1st.  This Began Changing around 2009 ish,  with summer lasting longer and longer, with some years, it remaining hot and humid into the end of December.  Since I first began writing rhymes in the mid 90's, I would almost always take the summers off (with a few exceptions) but generally, my ritual was to wait for that first brisk day, free of crippling humidity. The reason for this was, I very rarely sat indoors when writing songs, almost everything I've ever written was done outside, pacing back and forth any place I could find free of other humans haha.  I think it was around October 29th/30th of 2011 after weeks of complaining,  I woke up just as the sun was setting and stepped outside and was instantly greeted by a brisk, cool breeze, completely absent of humidity.  I was waiting specifically for this initial change in weather to put on this specific beat that I refused to listen to again after the first time I heard it because I didn't want my brain to start getting inspired and ruin the ritual.   I was very big on saving beats I knew I wanted to rhyme on for the right times to pull out, that way that initial energy was cemented with the memory of that 1st feeling of peace and relief....    This might sound silly,  But Florida isn't just hot,  it's beyond humid to the point you can shower,  walk out of your door to your car and sit down, dripping wet in a matter of moments...Plus the Mosquitos were relentless and usually stopped bothering people during fall / winter weather, which is a plus for someone who likes to walk at night while writing =)

I Vividly, remember sitting in the backyard of the condo and the weight bench on the deck, looking up at the stars feeling grateful and inspired.   Effortlessly penning those feelings down and deciding to keep this song short and to the point.  I already had 95% of my album recorded that I had been working on since 2007/2008 but I really wanted to include this beat on the album, so I patiently waited.  At this time,  I had no idea what was to come in terms of losing the entire album, nor that I would also be spontaneously deciding to move across the country after learning I had a very high paying contract working at Cedars-Sinai Hospital coming up in Feb 2012.

I had no Intentions at the moment of writing this song to stop writing and recording songs,  In fact, as you can hear, it was the complete opposite.  While I will admit the frequency of me wanting to write songs the past few years leading up to this was few and far between as I pivoted super hard in 2009 to making more instrumentals than I was writing or recording songs.  I was supercharged,  excited and proud to release the album I had been working on the past few years documenting my experiences as a much more mature young adult in his late 20's,  where Junk Planet I was a teenager that understood the harsh ways of the world much too young, and my sophomore album, I decided to focus more on being responsible with my words and do more uplifting than flexing thru battle raps and clever word play.  Romanticizing was me coming to terms with knowing the world has a balance of light and dark and that's just how it is,  Observe the injustice, call out the B.S. and bully the bullies of the world, while being thankful and choosing to focus on the beauty in this world.   The Beats I had for this album were so far ahead of their time.  I could use them today and the album wouldn't feel dated to me.  

Sadly,  I already wrote and recorded songs to those beats, and losing the hard drive right before I was moving to a new city with my (at the time)  "long distance GF" was just a blow I could not recover from.   I was able to partially recover the hard drive before leaving Tampa and moving to Los Angeles,  but what I received was just a million folders, and each folder just had jumbled files,  completely re-named to things "kk39ahd0fh002421"  It took me over a month going through each folder blindly playing files to try and organize and see what was recovered and as luck would have it, I recovered nearly every single beat from that album.   But all of the Project files / Sessions, Recordings, Settings, Mixdowns were all lost.        Not only did I not have time to re-record the album, but as you will learn,  I am very very very much attached to the magic of 1st take energy.  There was no way I was going to re-record songs and experiences without the initial energy I felt when I first recorded them.  So I scrapped the album and said to myself,  I'd get new beats, live through new experiences in a Different city and go from there, and thankfully,  I did not record the song you are reading about yet,  So I planned on starting with this track when I got to Los Angeles.      

Well,  Life is funny and takes you down different paths haha,  After moving to Los Angeles,  within the first 2 weeks of getting my apartment (more back context and back stories scattered though-out my other Artist account [ https://beta.catalog.works/dutchyyy] My girlfriend I moved from Las Vegas cheated on me haha,  which sucked but worked out because it gave me time alone in the apartment to create,  So I Recorded this song finally....   I was close with Joe Kay & Kronika of Soulection Prior to moving to Los Angeles, so as soon as I touched down,  I was already connected with everyone dope in the city.  Joe Kay would call me "Dutchy" on the Radio,  So when I'd book shows,  they would always mess up the flyers and put Dutchy instead of Dutchmassive,  I took this as a sign to separate my Rapping Alias and my Production/DJ Alias. At the same time,  Kronika introduced me to Ahwlee, who would come over every weekend and stay over, and that's where Ahwlee introduced Ableton Live into my life.....        I'm gonna be honest,  pivoting from FL Studio to Ableton was like unlocking a new world that made it so easy to execute my ideas and well..........   I spent the next few years as the producer main you now know as Dutchyyy =)

Los Angeles is not like Tampa...      There is no place, you can walk outside that isn't crowded with humans,  and being I like to be outside, alone away from humans while writing...        Dutchmassive went on extended Hiatus.  All while collecting beats from my favorite producers with the intent of eventually, sitting and writing a new album.......

This is a long back story huh?  but I posted this song for a reason as it was pivotal, combined with the loss of the hard drive and album,  being in a city, where I was overstimulated by people and could never find a place outside to be alone in my thoughts...    Prospects of new Dutchmassive album rapping kind of evaporated as I leaned super heavy into expressing my feelings and thoughts without saying words and instead translating a billion micro chops into my new language.          

The next song I would write and record would not happen until fall of 2014, in upstate NY.  "TRACK 37" aka "How Nice I Am"

Backstory:

"Better Man" was the Lead Single for "Crush Your System" and was featured in multiple magazines, nearly all relevant hip hop blogs at the time and saw continuous  air-time on college & public radio before, during and long after the album was released.   

It's crazy listening to this song in modern times, when nearly every platform outside of the one you are reading this on, are nearly all designed, focused on highlighting and celebrating the most distracting, least important and predatory part of "The Music"...  Stat's, Metrics, Charts, and all the shiny objects that lend zero authenticity to that sacred, immeasurable impact the right music can have when it connects with the right person at the right time in their life.         

Maybe my consistent vocal objection publicly around this subject will make more sense knowing how strongly I felt on the topic, long before the introduction of social media, likes, retweets, views, algorithms etc =)
 
I began working on my sophomore solo album "Crush Your System" before my Debut solo album "Junk Planet" was released.  Where Junk Planet was very much Golden Era Hip-Hop, especially when it came to Production.  My taste, soul, and spirit were far removed from that album long before it dropped.    

The Early to mid 2000's became a Super Producer Golden Era, after everyone Leveled up after hearing JayDee's (J Dilla) production on Slum Village's "Fantastic Vol.2 '' album.   I was thankfully at the right place, right time, around the right people to have full access to this new Era that was unfolding.   As Part of one of the first worldwide super beat collective's birth by SlopFunkDust ``Beat Fanatic" (SlopFunkDust, Illmind, M-phazes, Dela, Rik Marvel, Matt Naso, Rek-one (R.I.P.), Mekka don, Dutchyyy aka Dutchmassive, Mo0, Jake-One, DJ Rhrettmatic, S1, DJ Roddy Rod, 9th Wonder, Spon, Dj Blenda, Kay of the Foundation, Dj Cozmos, etc)  The Level of Production I had access to was inspiring.

With the Success of Little Brother's "The Listening" Album,  It was a golden era of genuine raps happening.  The world was much smaller back then, so all the dopest artist's and producers knew each other (Thank you Myspace!) With OkayPlayer, Rappers I Know, and countless other crucial blogs being tapped into the scene.  It was impossible not to be inspired surrounded by all the music dropping.     

As an emcee myself with a naturally higher pitched voice,  I always gravitated towards similar voices,  i.e. Q-Tip (ATCQ) So, when I learned of Little Brother's full squad "Justus League" I naturally did a double take the first time I heard "Median" Rhyme,  Not only voice wise, but subject matter and delivery.  

I had been collecting beats for the next album a few years, and I had a concept of collab song with the dopest High Pitched emcee's at the time,  So I reached out to Median and my man Von Pea (of Tanya Morgan) and began trying to find the perfect beat.  

Illmind ended up sending me 4 separate batches of 60 beats each.  All which I turned down which he was not happy about at the time.   There were countless dope beats in those batches I would have used, but I was searching for something specific,  I forgot how I ended up first hearing the Illmind beat we ended up using,  but even tho I know I frustrated Illmind being super picky,  I'm very thankful it all worked out the way it did.

I Remember Vividly, Driving out to "Marcelino Chelo Huerta Jr Friendship Park" in Tampa, FL and sitting at the top of Slide in the park, writing my verse for this song.

Coming into Crush Your System, I made a conscious shift to really honor the fact that I had a lot of minds tuning in that were really giving power to my words.

I don't mean like they thought I was dope. But rather related, or really needed to hear something from a different perspective. People would reach out and tell me my music was what saved them from giving up and committing Un-life'd...  which was crazy to me, cus I was young, surrounded by a more aggressive battle rap family and I was also creating exaggerated aggressive jawns (with my tiny a** voice haha. So while it was cool to feel like the dopest, and get props, and be clever and get to feel like a superhero through words. Just knowing that in the times I kept it genuine people were really impacted and it rippled out to help them also create positive ripples. I Decided that if I was going to take the time to write down thoughts, I was gonna be mindful of having that opportunity. not wasting it being influenced by writing flex raps or talking about stuff I don't do just to fit in with all the dope people that surrounded me. So I took a more moral compass approach moving forward.

  But I'm human... and I'm Dutchmassive "bitch" haha, I grew up during the early to mid nineties deeply embedded in the hardest and most braggadocious Era of hip hop so, maaaan. sometimes I just wanna pop off. but this album was me going thru my 20's trying to inspire myself and whoever was tuned in

I recorded both the Equilibrium (Celph Titled, Majik Most & Dutchmassive) album and my Debut Solo album "Junk Planet" from age 16-20

I know younger fans still to this day look at that as the dopest ish. but i can't, or don't really want to try to capture teenage angst Dutch haha. Even though, at 42 years old, I sound the same as when I recorded my first record. 

CYS was created from around 2001-2008 , It was an incomplete album when @Slopfunkdust blessed us all with the opportunity to release thru Rawkus Records with what would be, The first major Digital campaign in the industry. Rawkus took 50 artists and dropped 50 albums at once … Digitally.... It didn't pan out =/

There was a 3rd Dutchmassive album titled Romanticizing that I was near completing, until Xmas day Night in 2011, My computer Bluescreened and I lost everything  that I had created from 2006-2012.... The album was crazy. beats were next level and still hold up to this day.  I ended up recovering most of the files from that LAPTOP, Including all the Beats I used,  but I couldn't bring myself to re-record an album I already finished. If you will learn anything about me in the coming years it's that I really put value into 1st take energy. in an almost spiritual way, So i took it as a sign. Combined w/ the fact I ended up moving to Los Angeles a few months later,  The Rapper in me took an extended Hiatus while my production side "Dutchyyy" took the main stage for the next decade...      Or did it?.........         Stay tuned, because the thought of me just stopping expressing my emotions through words is crazy.  In 2014,  After moving to NY, I was summoned to Write and Record one last verse w/ the same fire and intensity of "Junk Planet" era Dutch to live on a legendary mixtape next to Golden Era + Early 2000's Underground Hip Hop Legends.  I took this opportunity to explain why,  the world as it existed at that time, was not deserving of my carefully planned out, written down thoughts and announced my indefinite Hiatus in the now immortalized....

Backstory:

The Lyrics are the true backstory.  Written shortly after I met [redacted] in 2006.  The Second verse was intentionally cut short but was not supposed to end there.  The original concept was to Document the stages of falling in love as they happen.  The pre-dating phase,  and then whatever happens from there I was going to write about as it happened.   However,  about a year later,  I got word that Rawkus Records wanted to released my Sophomore album but they needed it almost right away.   So I quickly scrambled, sequenced and polished what I could and turned in the album "Crush Your System" as is, unfinished.  Originally intended to be a double disk album,  One Disk Rhymes (Crush Your System)  and the other disk Instrumentals (Music2SleepTo...)  Since Butterflies was so short and endedabruptly,  I decided to Fuse one the instrumentals i produced into the story.  A precursor to the track that followed it.  A Deep House track I made. which must of confused people at the time it was released that A Instrumental Deep House track was on HipHop album with all rhymes haha.   My ex fiance'  is the one who put me onto deep house, which played a major role in my life and how I would hear / feel  / sequence music moving forward.  

I never got to finish writing the original concept and documenting the full stages of the relationship,  But she was really dope,  I loved her alot.  We danced very often.  She was beautiful, intelligent,  inspiring, soulful and driven,  but also super jealous, insecure & more focused on status & perceived value, A weird mixture of Badu & The Kardashians...    I was  an Artist, in my mid 20's,  off my 2nd album, floating through life, not  as as traditionally responsible  and didn't had the same  Life goals or values.   It didn't end well,  starving artist isn't everyone's cup of tea.  It was a dope Arc of my life,  she would probably disagree haha.


Parted ways, and moved onto the next ark.  Entered my first real depressive phase, but ended up being a very progressive phase.  Fall to Rise and all that jazzz.  The Yawn of the Gemini  / Blue Screen of Deaf. / Romanticizing Arc. Until lil Dutchy met his next love & future/last heartt break...... Backstory:

I created this beat  early 2006 on FL Studio (Fruity Loops version 3) shortly after selling my mpc2000.  In the living room of my Condo in Tampa Bay that  I shared with my friend and fellow Emcee "Will Widdoss".   To this day,  I've only rhymed over a few beats that I myself produced.  At this time (2006) I was only known as a Rapper, even though I had been producing as long as i've been rapping (1995).  I just released my first official instrumental project titled "The DrumLove EP" which was available on nearly every major hiphop blog at the time.  It was pretty short, around 20 minutes long and unfortunately  was riddled with an overload of drops that make me cringe haha but back then,  Instrumental HipHop (what has since been dubbed as Lofi-HipHop) was not very normalized or accepted and leaving your beats open would usually result in rappers taking it an invite to just record songs over your beats without asking,  so the drops were necessary. 

Since my name was finally out there as A Producer as well as an emcee,  I wanted to have at least one or two songs on my upcoming album that I Produced.   So I opened up the sliding patio door,  Blasted the beat on repeated and paced back and forth on the grass writing a song about gratitude and harmony.   Came inside,  Recorded My Vocals, Processed, mixed and decided,  this message was too important to be one short verse,  So I created my own version of the encore, while also introducing people to my default zone,  super slowed and mellowed.   allowing anyone listening to be able to fully digest my words.

and thus was born "Ghibli" A name I chose as the intent was the blow new winds of change through the industry and create some possible ripples,  Kinda like how watching any Studio Ghibli movie usually leaves a lasting impression that fosters compassion and empathy in it's viewers.

Anything titled "DailyRambles" is 100% off the dome, improv freestyles / jibberish.  Just needed to make that clear from the jump.  =)

With that disclaimer out of the way now,  I'll give you a brief (really long) history / context into the Reluctant Clap / DailyRambles Freestyle series before I get into the backstory surrounding this particular ramble.

My Last official album as the emcee "Dutchmassive" was "Crush Your System" which was released via Rawkus Records in 2007.  That's a really long time ago, but it wasn't the last album I recorded as Dutchmassive.

From 2008-2011 I recorded my Opus,  my next Dutchmassive album titled "Romanticizing".  It was amazing. The album I was most proud of,  The dopest beats, my best rhymes...  It was what I had been building up to all my life.  (for context, Samiyam produced 5 tracks on it) It wasn't finished but it was very close to being finished.  If you've been following my Catalog drops on my "Dutchyyy" artist page and reading the backstories,  you might remember the backstory behind my 2012 released instrumental album titled "Blue Screen of Deaf".  If not, TDLR: On Xmas night 2011, My Laptop that held all the beats I made from 2008-2011 and my next Dutchmassive album met the dreaded Blue Screen of death fate.  I Lost everything.  Years of work.  It broke me.  I ended up paying a lot of money for a hard drive recovery service and when I got it back,  It was just a bunch of random folders all titled "AVBDK28374" and every file in those folders was named similarly.   It recovered all the media files,  but nothing had a name.  Any Project files, Vsts, settings, mixdowns, were all gone.   Just random files.  So I did manage to recover all the beats produced by other people that I recorded to, but I'm not the type of person or artist that is willing to revisit already finished music and try to replicate it.  I could never match the same first take energy I put into that album. So I took it as a sign, I mourned the album, and 2 months Later I got distracted moving to Los Angeles to start a life with my now EX GF.  (who happens to be the subject of this freestyle, but we will get to that) 

Years go by, and I record some guest features, and verses once in a while,  but had zero plans to ever record another album as "Dutchmassive".   

Fast Forward to 2015,  After Los Angeles, After living upstate NY and releasing "Chill Gawd, Chill" and creating the "Uproot" & most of "Traversal".  I ended up back where I started.  Quite Literally,  the very same couch I was sleeping on at one of my best friends' apartments before I left for Los Angeles.   I had wiped, and reset all progress and was back where I started.  You know what extreme turmoil brings?  Frustration, passion, anger, hope... The Full spectrum.    You know what's a good release to put all those emotions into?    A new album sharing your thoughts.    So I began collecting new beats from all my favorite producers,  new beats = new energy.  So I got beat packs from Rnd1, Weirddough, Dibiase, etc...   and I bought a Tascam DR-05 field recorder.   Up until this point,  my usual method of writing lyrics was never actually writing lyrics,  I would freestyle into a tape recorder, or voice memos on the phone while I was out and about (remember I don't like sitting still when I write)  but this was the first time in History,  I was able to Play the beat in headphones, while mobile and record over the beat.   Prior to this, I would have to hold a speaker up in one hand,  and record into the phone with the other.   Not ideal.  Needless to say, the Tascam was a game changer for me.

What Started out as intent, to get beats that may inspire me to write, turned into something completely different and here is how Daily Rambles was born.

A Producer sends me a zip of beats.  I don't listen to any of them.  I load them all up on the tascam,  and blindly Freestyle over whatever plays, whether I like the beat or not.   If I can tell the beat isn't my style or won't match my voice,  I'll end up being silly and try out weird voices.  If the beat moves me,  I'll just try and sketch out a cadence, but this is all done blindly and in real time.  

This quickly got out of hand,  I got super addicted to recording these jibberish freestyles, and started doing this daily.  I can't tell you the amount of freedom that comes to recording things you never intend to publicly share.   The fun you have, and the ability to be honest and vulnerable and super introspect is pretty magical.    So I kept doing it,  just to stay sharp, and maintain my love for rhyming and having fun.   But I had zero intentions of any of these being heard by another soul haha.   

From 2015-2021 I recorded 5 seasons of Daily Rambles.  Some are straight incoherent jibberish and jokes and others I catch pockets of extreme lucidity to where It sounds like I wrote the song.  During this period of time, I began having health issues that I didn't understand,  this was documented in real time, the confusion and sadness and hope,  as the seasons progressed,  my health got way more severe,  Then 2020 happened,  and going outside became a risk.  With my health in the worst condition, the Loss of my Career teaching at the hospital, the loss of health insurance and a deadly virus that made going to the hospital, the most unsafe place on the planet for someone with no immune system to go to, I began accepting Mortality as a realistic near future.  I Shifted all my priorities into securing my legacy and began creating the "Dutchyyy VS the Algorithms" master vault cloud drive, where I uploaded most of my released discography and unreleased discography in fear that I wasn't going to be around long enough to share all my unreleased music with the world.  I shifted how I approached music in general and began streaming, and recording every single session from start to finish,  and experimenting and pushing the limits of live improv to extreme levels.  Immense flow state...  i.e. #EvolvingPortals 

I came to terms with the situation and finally managed to drop all pride, and decided to start making these freestyles public.   Something I was too prideful to do, out of fear people wouldn't understand they were freestyles and just thought they were new written songs.     

But If my time is limited,  who cares...  I'd rather leave behind my vulnerable  introspective, goofy ramble freestyles, then they be locked away on my hard drive.  In the year 2021,  My health reached absolute critical levels,  I tried my hardest to fight it and push creating publicly even further and started live streaming the freestyles as well.  Until I could no longer do it,  Couldn't even, and still can't sit up in a chair without my knees holding my body up, which is why my live streams stopped last year and I left all communities and exiled myself into extreme isolation.   The Very last freestyle I recorded was done Live on IG, on my birthday last year.  
I ended up releasing it on Catalog.   A 15 minute Freestyle originally titled EULOGY, you now know as "The long cold hot take"

I didn't really intend to go this in depth or be this open and transparent about my situation,  but I guess my pride of people thinking these freestyles are actual serious written songs embarrases me more than people understanding how severe my health has been / is..  But I hope it provided proper context around the series, and honestly.    If I was no longer on this earth,  It may sound crazy,  but I think I'd rather people deep dive into all 5 seasons of Daily Rambles over my actual written albums or instrumental albums and the reason is,  no one was ever supposed to hear any of this stuff.   So it's like Chronological Journal of sorts and gives a lot of insight into who I am when you make it past all the jibberish hahah.

Enough Disclaimer, Daily Rambles backstory and onto the backstory or context for "Know you well"

So hopefully by now you know,  Any track you hear that's a daily ramble,  It's not planned,  up until the moment I press record, I have not heard the beat yet.   So ultimately the beat commands me on what direction I go.    This was recorded October of 2018,   I just flew home from working at the hospital in Brooklyn.   While I was at my hotel,  my EX hit me up to let me know she was in NY.   For context,  We dated on and off 2009-2014 and it was super toxic,  but I'm not built for holding hatred or resentment so we on and off remained somewhat friends.  When she hit me up in NY, my health was really bad to the point I couldn't even stand up at the hospital,  I would sit on the ground with my knees to my chest (like L from deathnote) which is exactly how I'm sitting and writing this backstory out.   She would always try to creep back in and say stuff beyond friends,  but she was literally in NY with another guy haha,  So I didn't sweat it at the time, but it obviously impacted me to the point where, when I got home.  I drove my TAO TAO scooter to the Park, next to the ocean and began recording daily rambles,  lots of them,  when this beat came on...   All I heard was "I love you" from the start.   and welp,  my mind did all the rest hahah..     No pre-emptive thoughts,  didn't even think about her since we talked that night in NY,  but the beat commanded it,  So i ran with it.  and if it hasn't sunk in by now,  there's a part in the song, where I say "awww Stepped in ant pile,  Story of my life"  As I said that,  I literally stepped in a huge Fire ant mound, which is why you notice my mind got a bit off topic and quickly ended the Freestyle because they were biting my legs up pretty bad.    But it's just documenting thoughts and events in real time.  
and thus "Know you well" was born.
  I really hope this backstory wasn't super depressing haha.  I know my health is serious and it's a super heavy topic and I don't like burdening anyone outside of the small circle that knows what's going on with me.  The last thing I want when people think of me, is to think about my bad health, or have sympathy or pity or feel bad. I hope my lighthearted attitude and glass half full mentality and my productivity will overshadow any of the health stuff.   It was just too deeply rooted into this backstory for me to avoid. Like the blockchain, I'm basically default set to full transparency.

Backstory:

Far Away was my mode ode to Escapism & Progression.  Growing up as a teenager,  Pete Rock's "Escapism" was the song from the album that resonated the most.  From the production to the lyrics,  it was a mode that always stuck with me.  A vivid Daydreamer born into sub optimal conditions found a way to tune out the harsh reality he was dealt and aspire for greater things.  I don't mean greater as in quantity or material, rather purpose thru creating tiny ripples, trying to reach hearts and minds, and do my best to make sure my heart and mind remain open to receive even during the most hectic of times.  To be unswayed by the noise or shiny things, to remind my soul this isn't our first time experiencing this world and not to let its harsh conditions harden you and extinguish your light.  If you're a head,  Hopefully you caught the reference and Nod to The Roots - "Proceed" as it was a song that helped shape me as a teenager and helped me become a better man.  I often added classic hip-hop references / Nods into my songs as a way of saying thank you for raising me right and a sign of respect and acknowledgement to the inspirations that helped shape me.  

This song was written in different time periods.  The 2nd verse was actually written in 2001,  on the balcony of my first Studio apartment and it was written and recorded to a different beat (produced by my man "Main")  I think that version only exists somewhere on a blank cassette,  maybe one day i'll find it and upload it, I honestly forgot it existed until I began writing this backstory.  I said it before, but it's pretty amazing how music can transport you back to the moments when you were first creating it, but I'm contradicting my own lyrics and getting distracted and sidetracked haha.  

The 1st verse was written in 2006, on the balcony / porch of a condo I was renting w/ my friend and one of my favorite emcees, Will Widdoss.  I say it was written on the porch,  but that means I was probably pacing back & forth in the parking lot as sitting still was never really my strong suit especially when it came to writing songs but I know it began on the porch and most likely ended there.  

As for context around the verse.  I was two years out from releasing my Debut album "Junk Planet".  An album I sunk years into my life creating and even though it was in every major store world wide and had a good amount of hype and dope reviews.  3 months after it dropped the Label filed for bankruptcy and never paid any of the Artists on the Label.  Long story short,  reality smacked me in the face and Dutchy had to re-enter the workforce haha.  I couldn't handle going back into corporate work structures at the time,  So I started doing landscaping with a few friends,  A job I knew most people would look down on, but one that had zero form of corruption attached to it and my soul needed a break from sales jobs, mortgages,  call centers or anything that involved pushing products on people.  The shift humbled me and gave me full workday's to listen to beats and brainstorm, all while working closely with mother nature and making lawns and gardens look pretty.  This probably seems like a weird pivot in topics,  but choosing to do landscaping over returning to the corporate world at the time was a very pivotal life choice that gave me so much time to think, be introspective and plan things out.  It did wonders for my creativity and working in that florida summer heat definitely helped me sleep at night.  Something I've never been able to do since I was an infant, and still to this day,  no matter how many times I try to reverse my schedule,  It immediately flips back to Nocturnal mode, because that's when my mind is hyper creative and active.  So much so that I spent 2009-2019 traveling state to state, teaching nurses and physicians how to chart electronically and in those 10 years,  I only worked the day shift,  maybe 3 weeks total in a decade.  The rest of the time, my shift was always between 5pm-8am =) 

I think my love for the night has less to do with sunlight and more to do with the tranquility & the stillness,  like having the world all to yourself.  Not sure if that makes sense.    

When it comes to the topic of inhaling plantlife. Tree's have always calmed my over active mind and allowed me to focus on things, the problem is and always has been.  I gain all these enhanced senses, but I lose my ability to communicate.  It's a hard trade off sometimes, but something I've been super self aware of my whole life.  I know a lot of people can relate, but it was something that was weighing on me at the time, so it ended up manifesting in the song.   
I love this song with all my heart. No real concept, No Ego, just real time self reflection and hope for a brighter future. I've overcome so much in life since this was released, but I never lost my love for progressive escapism after the sun sets =)  

If you haven't caught on by now,  that line about never getting distracted no longer applies to my core personality haha.  I'm the ultimate real time pivot side tracked champion these days, It's nice to tho to listen back and remember a time when I was able to hyper focus 

This wasn't my typical backstory huh?  Like Freestyling time travel a bit.

Backstory: 

I don't know what to say haha.  I listen back to this song created when I was barely 20 years old and I was already so jaded and fed up with the drastic shift in the music industry and if I could time travel back and explain to young Dutch, be grateful for the state of music right now,  cus it's only down hill from here....   I don't think it would have made a difference honestly.  I was always super passionate about what I love, and I always felt it was important to balance being responsible with your platform,  inspire, motivate but also call out the B.S. and help keep the checks and balances.  I don't think my personality has changed that much from 2 decades ago,  which is why it's hard for me to try and make time to sit and write and record a new Dutchmassive album.  There's so much crazy ish happening in the world right now,  but I would end up writing a double disk album all about the algorithms and how they fundamentally altered how humans interact and engage with one another and I don't think anyone cares to hear all that, so for now, I'll just stick to making instrumental music and freestyling introspective gibberish for fun into my tascam  haha.

Honestly,  I can't recall a huge backstory for this track.  shout to my man PackFM for honoring the album with one of my favorite verses and shout to J. Rawls for letting me pick this beat to rock on.  I do remember asking for something that sounded similar to the track he did for Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli) "Brown Skin Lady" or The Lone Catalysts self titled song "Lone Catalysts" but I ended up choosing this beat cus it made me think of listening to Jazz at the Pyramids of Giza, and I was really in my Egyptian bag in my late teens and early 20's so much so that I had a Stone Replica King Tut Tomb coffee table haha.    

I'm always hesitant to upload these back catalog songs that were created 2 to 3 decades ago,  because I know hardly anyone probably reads the back stories, and most just press play and assume it's new music but I'm a sucker for documenting history and leaving legacy on the digital library so I'll curb my pride and just keep em coming, new or old. =)

Backstory:

"Classic" was one of the last songs written & recorded for "Junk Planet". I began the album during the very cusp of the "Golden Era" of hip-hop in 1997 when the jiggy / masiofo / casio keyboard era started to dominate radio & television. Little did I know this was not going to be just a phase and would ultimately change the course of rap / hip-hop and music in general as this was also the same time Clearview (now iheartradio) would take over all major urban fm radio stations and pivot to only playing a select amount of the most popular / commercial songs on repeat every hour.  This was also around the time Record labels learned that fans were more than o.k. consuming watered down, generic keyboard production and paying for sample clearance wasn't necessary to sell hit records.  Anyone that grew up as an active fan of hip-hop from the early 90's to around 97/98 knows that we were spoiled with an abundance of unique and diverse forms of hip-hop,  stuff you couldn't even imagine being played on MTV or BET these days. It was truly an overwhelming amount of classic music that painted abstract pictures, transported you and captivated your heart & soul.   

I'm sure every generation thinks the music they grew up with is "their" golden era and created memories and have nostalgia attached to those songs,  I wasn't an "old head" when this shift occurred so we can't use nostalgia as an excuse.  You just kinda had to be there to understand. Going from the wild west of musicians creating the type of music they want to hear, no matter how silly, aggressive or experimental and it would get played on The Box, Rapcity and Yo! MTV Raps.  It began with flexing unrealistic ways of life and making it seem very obtainable.  Mob lifestyle & flexing material possessions became the standard.  "Fake it, till you make it" At this time,  Artists were not making the type of money from music they were acting like they had.  This would change over the decades and slowly seep into society, making the majority of the population hyper focused on wasting money on excessive name brands, jewelry, vehicles they probably never would have cared about or thought twice about if not having those things programmed and shoved in your face 24/7.   

I need to make it clear,  while radio & mainstream tv were playing the pop-ish, watered down, party records.  The underground was in full steam.  The dope music didn't stop being created,  it just no longer had the mainstream stage any longer, but if you were a head, you had nearly an unlimited supply of styles of sincere music to listen to.   All this excessive, over the top unrealistic music dominating the airways would be fuel for the underground and even spawned a semi-mainstream arc of "Conscious-HipHop"  I could go on and on about the history above and underground from the late 90's all the way to 2022 as I've been a head my whole life and I always payed attention and sought out dope music while also being an artist through-out all the waves and changes but when "Classic" was created.  It honestly wasn't even that bad in hindsight haha,  If we only knew then, how far down the corporate., cookie-cutter rabbit hole  music would continue for the rest of time.  There was always classic music being created from 97 to present,  this song was just my dedication to a time when it had the same mainstream platform as we hear the "top 10" in now. 

I will continue to create and collect dope music til my very last breath.  You will never have to worry about me burning out, losing interest or moving on from genuine music.

Backstory:

"Just Me & My Walkman" was the 2nd song I wrote and recorded for my Debut solo album "Junk Planet" in 1998.  At the time, I was also an emcee in the Tampa Bay native underground hip hop group "Equilibrium" (Celph Titled, Majik Most, Dutchmassive & DJ Kramtronix)  We had been recording our full length album "Tropic States" (which still remains unreleased) since 1996,  Celph moved to NYC to work at Buds Distribution & helped formed Demigodz & joined Army Of The Pharaohs.  We had just released our 1st 12" vinyl as Equilibrium "Fahrenheit 813" B/W "Critical Conditions" (feat. Vex of The Boogiemonsters) & "Windows 98" and getting ready to release our 2nd 12" "Do that" B/W "Hold Something".   

With Celph in NYC taking on more projects and responsibilities and Majik Most no longer in the group for a short period of time, I was getting antsy waiting to unleash all this creative energy I had pent up as a Teenager.  Celph Introduced me to the producer Deeskee, who he met while working on Braille's first album Lifefirst: Half The Battle.  Which was half produced by Celph & half produced by Deeskee.  I fell in Love with Deeskee's Production on Braille's album so we linked over the phone and he sent me a demo of his upcoming instrumental album "In Loving Memory Of..."   which still remains one of my favorite and most influential albums of my life.  Deeskee was very good at creating music that fit the vision of the emcee he was working with.  He wouldn't allow me to choose any existing beats and wanted the challenge of creating new and very specific beats designed around my voice and the concepts I wanted to execute.   He Produced 5 tracks on "Junk Planet" 
"Bus Stop Building Block" which was the very first song I recorded as a solo artist.
"Just Me & My Walkman" which was the 2nd track I recorded for this album.

I wanted the first single on vinyl to be "Just Me & My Walkman" b/w "My Own Sh*t" & "Bus Stop Building Block" but the Label wanted to release the more "Battle Rap" Aggressive tracks as the singles that had Alot of at the time "Famous" features.  A Decision I'm sad about to this day.  The Label told me,  we could release the tracks I want as the 3rd single but 3 months after the album was released.  The Label "Freshchest" filed for bankruptcy not only killing any chances of a 3rd single but also sealing the fate of no artists on the label getting paid.   The album was created from 1997-2002,  This was prior to home studio's being the norm so the amount of my I invested into studio time,  flights, and just years of expression never saw a single penny of return. This dismantled me hard at the time. I was riding this high with my CD being in every store worldwide and the vinyl being in all the record shops across the globe.  Write ups in the Source, XXL, Blaze, URB etc..   I really thought my life was going to change and my family would stop saying I'm wasting my time putting so much effort into music. This gave them and everyone else who doubted me the ammo they needed to rub in "I told you so" which hurt more than not getting paid.  "Junk Planet" took 2 years to be released after I finished recording it, So by the time it was released to the world, it was old to me and I was well into into recording my sophomore album "Crush Your System" with Production from Samiyam, 14KT, Illmind, Dela, SlopFunkDust, etc which would eventually be released in 2007 on Rawkus Records and meet pretty much the exact fate,  Almost to a T,  where the Labeled filed for bankruptcy 3 months after release and for those who aren't familiar with how Major / Independent releases went at the time.  You didn't get your first payment until after 3 months.   

As for the backstory around the song,  I think the song speaks for itself.  I've been very reluctant to mint music on my Dutchmassive Artist Profile since the music is nearly 3 decades old and pretty dated.  Also, I don't think "web3" is very familiar with History as an artist and how long I've been creating as Dutchmassive and as Dutchyyy.  I know not everyone takes time to read these long backstories and I only have 2 official albums as Dutchmassive, that were pretty momental releases for their time so I've been holding off because I don't want people to think I'm insane when I set the auction prices for songs from the releases.  I've come to terms with that now though.  It doesn't matter when or if these tracks get collected.  It's just important to me, they are on chain and my history and story is solidified.  

I chose to lead with "Just Me & My Walkman" because I think it's Audible Proof and provenance that not Only am I one of the OG artists that helped pave the way for underground / independent hip hop but I am also one of the OG Collectors and I haven't slowed down on creating or collecting ever.   Music truly is the healer,  it is the utility.  Music saved my life as a teenager and it's never let me down spiritually or emotionally.  I haven't Recorded a new album as Dutchmassive in well over a decade, but I never stopped rhyming, I just pivoted to recording daily Freestyles to stay sharp and have fun in private.  In a world where everyone has a soap box and we spend all day and night reading each other's thoughts. The Magic of words and expressing thoughts kinda lost its special place in my heart.  There's more to expand on that but I'll save that for another backstory.

From:  "Earthtones & Concrete" - Take (aka Sweatson Klank) Debut Full length album, released August 2007 on CD & 2xLP via Inner Current Recordings.

Backstory:  The year was 2006,  Myspace top 5 was a very relevant flex and easy identifier for like minded musicians to connect.  2 years had passed since I released my debut solo album as an emcee  "Junk Planet".  Released world wide July 13, 2004 on CD / 2xLP.  
For context, I began writing and recording for Junk Planet late 1997 while also recording an album with my group at the time "Equilibrium" (Celph Titled, Majik Most & Myself) and finished recording the the last song for Junk Planet in 2002.  Time moved slower for music back then. There was no "keeping up with daily content".  You had the freedom to live and experience life and use that experience for inspiration to craft well thought out albums.
   
   I was taking my time recording my sophomore album "Crush Your System" An album I began writing & recording for in 2003, which would later be released on Rawkus Records as part of worlds first digital only campaign "The Rawkus 50" but i'm getting sidetracked.
 
Taking my time, building an arsenal up of production from my favorite producers at the time:  Samiyam, 14KT, Take, Dakim, !llmind, Dela, SlopFunkDust, Mo0, etc... All friends I made through the power of Myspace.   I had just released my first official instrumental project titled "The Drumlove EP" as well as the mixtape "Project: REACH" when Take (Sweaton Klank) sent me the perfect beat.  He was able to match my voice and style so well,  but instead of me using the beat on my upcoming album he wanted me to be the only emcee to feature on his debut full length.  The pressure of knowing I would be the only person rapping on this album made me take writing this song very serious.  I didn't want to just do some typical braggadocios battle rap since I knew the album was going to more like a movie score in a sense rather than just a collection of random beats.   At the time,  I was dating a girl who was very inspirational and had me exploring things outside of my normal wheelhouse.  She had perfect recall when it came to dreaming and was able to lucid dream with ease. So the months leading up to writing "Dream Suite" I had been using a dream journal every morning and studying Astral Projection and Lucid dreaming in general.  Something I've only ever been able to achieve a few times in my lifetime and once I realized I was in control,  I would immediately wake up haha.  So I decided to make Lucid dreaming the subject matter for the song I was going to write.  Nearly everything I wrote about was true to form and directly inspired by the research I had been doing.  I did take one creative liberty and changed "Greek Dream Temples" to the inaccurate "Egyptian Dream Temples" but that's because I was obsessed with the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt since I was a child and thought Egyptian sounded "cooler" than saying "Greek".  Plus I needed a word with multiple syllables haha.  I recorded, mixed and mastered my vocals and sent them off to Take (Sweatson Klank) - The beat I wrote to was just a rough sketch, so when he sent me the final version with all the change up's and the outro that transports you to a different world.  I don't know what else to say.  This became one of my favorite tracks of all time, and I couldn't believe I was lucky enough to be apart of it.   

Years later,  long after "Crush Your System" was released on Rawkus,  I released an updated version on bandcamp with added songs (since my 3rd solo album as Dutchmassive titled "Romanticizing" was lost on Xmas 2011 to corrupt hard drive resulting in the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death")  After losing all of my beats from 2008-2011 and the album I spent years writing and recording.   I just took a few extra songs I featured on, added them to Crush Your System and decided to hang up the mic and focus primarily on Production moving forward.   I know, I know, what a sad ending haha,  but truth is,  I'm an emcee at heart, so I never stopped rhyming.  I just stopped writing and recording albums.  Instead,  I began recording freestyles daily for fun.  What started out on voice memos,  graduated to a Tascam DR-05 in 2015.  The creative fulfillment that came with recording freestyles for fun without the pressure of them ever being heard was the ultimate therapy and would get me thru the toughest of days while also having fun keeping the spirit of the emcee alive 2015-present and thus was born DailyRambles aka "The Reluctant Clap"

I wanted my Genesis drop as "Dutchmassive" to feature another Catalog Artist and it just worked out that one of my favorite songs I've recorded to date was produced by a producer who also an artist on Catalog Works =)
