Remembering this evening feels like a dream that was destined to happen. I’ve performed hundreds of times in my life, but this time felt different. Since October of last year, I had been watching the genocide in occupied Palestine unfold through social media on my phone everyday.  I felt and still feel more than ever, the responsibility to use my gifts as a musician and healer to honor Earth’s divinity and her children.

“Ritual” is the ninth track on the infina ad nausea LP featuring my friend CSLTY. This track is the brief touch-base with clarity, when the frenzied thoughts reassemble into fresh ideas. CSLTY initially sent me an ambient demo for this track, which I sampled and reworked into a higher energy space.

infina ad nausea is a play on latin terms “ad infinitum” and “ad nauseum.” I was trying to create a phrase to describe growing sick of a false feeling of permanence, as though you're living in a never ending loop.

I made this song around my birthday earlier this year, and it was a very necessary outlet to just celebrate and freely express how happy I am to be where I'm at right now. The friends I have, the work I'm making, the artists I get to work with - I have alot to be thankful for. This song has been helping me remember that gratitude when things look dim, a waypoint to look back on and reflect on the constant fluctuations we all experience. 

And all serious shit aside, this one was just fucking fun to make! I was jumping and bobbing around for weeks making this. I love to take art + music super seriously, but it's also just as important to just have fun for no reason other than enjoying making something cool. 

I also designed the cover art, and had just as much fun making that as the song. I just kept stacking more and more shapes on top of each other. I think the art has ~300 layers if I recall? I just kept adding more and more cause it was fun to see how dense I could make it without reaching overkill territory haha. And it seemed to fit the density of the song as well.

The music of “Potential Energy” is based on the idea of creating “spaces” with sound. Each track was a whole world I lived in for days on end, finding myself under the spell of the sound as it looped constantly. I’d sit for hours entranced, moving elements around here and there, hardly even stopping the loop when I left the room. As such, I tried to let the spaces guide themselves. Letting my mind wander and play while keeping my hands on the mixer, guiding the music more like I was flying a spacecraft through various dimensions and the knobs were the controls rather than trying to do anything contrived. As I flew around, I’d stop for some time and let the sound pull me into its dimensional experience.

Lord lord… what do I say about this one? 

This song is the reason I picked a career in the music industry. I made this when I was in high school and was debating on whether I wanted to keep trying music or just stop completely. I uploaded this on SoundCloud after class one day and noticed the numbers rising. I sent this song to pigeons and planes (2013 blog era shit if you were there it was fucking legendary) and once it got posted, my life essentially changed overnight. I had never left my city to perform before this song came out, had never talked to an a&r or record label, and was put into a lot of rooms that the younger me just would’ve never imagined being in. This song gave me the confidence to become an artist and grow into who I wanted to be. I wrote this song in 30-60 minutes, never imagined it changing my life in the ways it did. "Bang" is a song about having no way out, making the wrong decisions in life and what that impact looks like on the world around you, or what the impact of your surroundings make on you.

Transcendence.

This song reflects a time about a year ago when I was exploring the idea of relinquishing control, and embracing agency as a person. It became apparent that the more I tried to excessively control situations, my direction, my creativity, my productivity, etc., I was sure to feel more friction in those areas. Trying to control your creativity is a sure fire way to get blocked up. Overworking often makes you feel so burnt out that the quality of your work decreases, despite spending more time doing said work. All of these are issues of control, trying to demand that reality bends to your will. It is a rigid way to exist, especially as a creative person. There is far more power in your ability to go with the flow than to force yourself upstream. 

This song was my diary for about a month while I was exploring these feelings, and trying to simply let things in my life happen naturally. The more I loosened my grip, the better I felt. And paradoxically, the more confident I felt about the parts of my life I do have control over. I've carried that perspective with me and it's continued to improve my quality of life. 

I also designed the cover art, as I do for all of my releases.

Ethan Gruska, Jimmy Stack, and I started this song the first time we all worked together, and went through many iterations before being finished. the last song in the pause series, and the instrumental from doja cat's 2015 demo "eyes on u". 

"one day" was made during the last semester before i dropped out of college: i started working on it amidst an extremely debilitating anxiety attack that marked the beginning of the end of my first (and last) real relationship. i've dealt with anxiety most of my life, but it became especially problematic when in a relationship that i couldn't healthily contribute to, as my anxiety was overshadowing every part of my life.

i originally titled the track "one day we'll have to face ourselves", which i later shortened to "one day" (the original title was corny as fuck). while the original name was very corny, the message still resonates with me: to this day i have many deeply rooted issues that i failed to address over the years, and as a result i'm not in the place i could be. i've fucked up friendships, "relationships", and sunk into a weird pit that has been hard to climb back out of, and i know that at some point i'm going to have to address it all. the catch is that the longer we wait to address our issues, the harder it becomes to manage them and regain control; that's what "one day" is about.
