that's just life and what come's with it.

"The Lecture" is the result of a class assignment I had back in 2010 to record and mix a track featuring primarily "found sounds", field recordings, anything recorded on a Zoom H2 portable stereo recorder. And since I was ripe for a challenge barely 2-3 years into making beats at the time, I went crazy recording myself to make the perfect beatbox sounds to create the backbone of one of my favorite compositions to date.

I dug this one out of the now-famous (and private) AbJonian Vault recently looking for sounds to splice up for my recent release, the "AbJonian Vault Selections", and decided to mix it down to share on-chain.

My favorite part of this recording, however, are the vocals, my very first time putting them to print ever, where the lyrics say and repeat over and over:

It was my attempt to convey my idea of the duality of being confident in one's self and the ability to deliver, while also desiring to just "be", outside of all the ongoings of purpose and the need to do anything else but.

I hope that this song resonates with you, the collector, the listener, the way it has for me since I've made it; a reminder from my past self not to forget myself and who I am before anything else in life...

otherwise known as the "orisha" of iron, of creativity, of building and destroying, ogún is one of the gods i personally and objectively resonate with the most in yoruba tradition. a former practitioner of santería myself, still devout in many ways to the spirit, to ashé, i know myself more through these orishas than in any other way. this slap here absolutely destroys as it builds, as ogún would have it no other way...

this is a facet of my production that I don't very often play around in very much, but that I draw a lot of my inspiration from. i've always been fascinated with the jungle/dnb/broken beat and high-tempo corner of electronic music, and my first attempts ever at were me incorporating these styles into my own. i was lucky to have mostly older as well as more adventurous friends early in my music career that exposed me to the kode9's, roni size's, to mark de-clive lowe, bugz in the attic or viktor duplaix, steve spacek and ig culture, and so this is a bit of an homage to them, as well as a nod to my recent contemporaries, a reminder to myself that yes, I too am fascinated with this sound, and too know that this kind of music is special in how it inspires and motivates you...

Another one I want to dedicate to my "pops", this is as raw and vulnerable as maybe anyone has gotten from me ever before.

This is a riff I decided to take on my homie's upright in Washington while I was recording the album I'm working on right now ("the goodfoot cafe"), in homage to two of both my father and I's favorite musicians, Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays.

In my music, I make it clear that I ask questions way, way more than I look for answers. Answers fascinate me, but questions are what make life, and certainly also music, much more interesting than it would without them. The very vitality of music and our relationship with it is that it never really ends, that there's always a quest we must take with ourselves, even after the last note of a song plays. And I make a point not to end any of my songs in complete resolution, so that the proverbial, life long musical quest of mine goes on.

I'll take whatever bid finishes out this auction, this one is for the spirit, computationally bound or not, and thank you again whoever appreciates my offering to it enough to collect it for themselves...

this one is sentimental for me.

my father wasn't my idol or my hero, so much as he was my mentor, my guide, a true role model for me who I had the utmost respect for more than maybe any other man I've ever known. he and his love for music, as well as his vast collection of music, from his digital library to the stacks and stacks of vinyl, cd's and tapes that i've perused and certainly abused over time, are the source of my musical background, the source of my musical inspiration, my musical dna if you will. without him, more than anyone else, "abjo" does not exist.

if he were here today, this track definitely would've been his favorite to-date, and i imagine he knows i've embedded him into this soundpiece as a part of its dna, or else it would not have come out right.

"the goodfoot cafe" is the title of the next full-length record I am currently in the middle of recording for, and it will be my first album I plan to tour on, as well as break (back) into the live musical performance corner of my artistry. If you didn't know already, I am classically trained, disciplined in 2 different stringed instruments (violin, viola), have professionally sessioned and played keys and drums/percussion in bands and orchestras since I was 15 years old. I grew up not just listening to great and all kinds of music, but playing, writing/composing and bandleading, even across the country before "AbJo" was a thing, something I'm pretty proud of, and is a huge part of who I am as a music artist and producer, as well as just who I actually am. This track is an original idea that kinda instrumentally sums up the vibe of this record. With a little help from the homie Alex Dyring on the bass riffing alongside me as I play the keys here, "the goodfoot cafe" is at its heart, a big jam sesh, albeit more organized and with the intent of driving a narrative, and this track is the soul of this idea.

With this piece, whomsoever holds it will be one of very few who I will give all access to every show date I play "the goodfoot cafe" at, acting as a backstage pass I will make official at every venue as a valid ticket, as well as the whole tour package curated from me personally: a signed physical copy of the record, a single piece of each merch item I sell for release of the record and from on tour, a social media post/photo-op with me, co-signed by me publicly and personally, and more. Like the title, even then when I dropped the track and it featured on BBC Radio 1 XTRA days after, this one was created forever ago, right as I had begun to even establish my now signature sound(s), and so then WAY far ahead of my own time when this came out. A now-forgotten gem, this is all me playing each instrument and crazy sounding synth, as well as the guitar solo reprise at the end, which featured as a motif in my last full release, "In Limbo" and will continue to feature in upcoming releases in a musical saga I am on a journey to interconnect...

This is my series of NFTs, featuring tracks of my complementary remix project for my "CHROMA" release dating back to June 2018. These tracks are now only available on the blockchain, or with whomever collects these tracks, in which I'll supply all of the existing remixes to whoever collects each 1/1 NFT, for as long as I can keep track of each collection. This project in general is close to my heart, as I worked on it through a soul searching journey/vacation overseas in Southeast Asia that inspired me to release this project.

I hope everyone that collects this series not only slaps them at high volumes and finds joy in all the crazy sounds and chords I played, but is possessed of a spiritual journey of their own via my musical message to the universe...
