My first car was a Ford Focus hatchback. It kind of looks like a shoe, with this bump in the back. It had a great sound system. 

My friends and I would take long cruises in this thing after work hours. We'd burn CDs of new music, get some food and then cruise around Dubai just on a vibe.

I wrote this song during the 2021 pandemic lockdowns. I was reminiscing about that car and those times, re-imagining it in a glamorised way.

So Zen (Bump In The Back)

HATE TO ADMIT is inspired by this idea that art takes courage sometimes. Particularly when you write about things that crack your ego.

In Nov-Dec 2021 I had enrolled in a writers workshop just to keep the pen sharp. So I was in the 'writing zone'. 

I thought it would be interesting to write something where every rhyme felt like an admission, and made me question whether I should say it on record. So much of hip hop is written for self-affirmation that the opposite feels strange. This song is the result of that writing exercise.

The melodic hook is also unusual for me. I've never 'sung' on record. Funny story: I took a 5 day surfing trip to the south of Sri Lanka. Every morning after surf lessons I'd wade out into the ocean where I could project my voice and practice the hook of this song, knowing that I'd be returning to the city to lay it down in the studio later.

This was a song I created for my first self-produced EP in 2017.
I self produced 6 of the  tracks. And the 7th is a remix submitted by a friend.  I titled the EP Sky Reach. It’s was a concept album lyrically speaking. The original is available on Bandcamp.

The 6th Track on this EP was a latin inspired arrangement I made. I always felt that I could do more with that.  So I hired a co-producer and got him to re-play everything in September 2021. He added his own parts too.   

The artwork was designed with a wedding in mind. In Sri Lanka (where I live) there is a really healthy wedding culture. And so I figured it would be cool to try to make something that draws from that imagery.

The lyrics were written in 2017 at a time when I was bored with music. Self-producing an EP was my attempt at alleviating the boredom, even though I had very limited experience with production. In the lyrics I recall the times back in the day when I had fallen in love with music to the point where I would park my car under street lights and write to beats. But then as I wrote the song the lyrics unfolded as a romance with the Muse.
